So.... I seem to remember that if you rebuild, you lose your 'starting equipment' and get the starting equipment for the new class.
The ALPG says the opposite. Was their an update/FAQ to this, or did I just imagine it?
If it is true... where can I find that. I looked in the wiki and the ALPG.

| #2abanathieJul 12, 2015 17:02:08 | They haven't implemented it. The intention was to allow for swapping of starting equipment; they just never implemented the rules for the swap by publishing the rules. When I queried, they just pretty much said to wait for next season. This was early in the current season. |
| #3KalaniJul 12, 2015 18:10:51 | That is not correct. The rules have been implemented, however they have not yet been added to the ALPG (we were promised an updated ALPG early in the season with the corrections but it never materialized).
The Rebuilding Rule is as follows:
Rebuilding Rules - Equipment.
The sole reason why characters must choose starting packages was to allow them to easily rebuild their starting equipment. Unfortunately, the rebuilding rules were a direct copy/paste of the Season 1 ALPG and was not updated to account for this fact.
There is a thread on the Season 2 ALPG somewhere on this forum. Within said thread, the admins confirmed the new rebuilding rules with HQ. (If you give me a moment, I will hunt down the direct quotes).
Again, these rules were intended to be included in the Season 2 ALPG but were ommitted due to an editing oversight.

| #5abanathieJul 13, 2015 0:38:02 | Hard to access rules shouldn't be the norm for the Adventurer's League; as I said before, it just creates confusion. How is anyone suppose to know a changed rule if it wasn't entered in the FAQ or updated in the ALPG? How do you implement a rule that isn't published in the AL FAQ or the ALPG? Nothing in Adducci's personal reply to my query indicated that switching starting equipment was mandatory; however, I can see a few issues where creating small race characters will be... Well those already exist don't they. If the AL cannot publish the rules in a manner that can be disseminated effectively, I don't see how one can expect to enforce the rule. I can actually see being enforced; however, Leadership 101 tells me that enforcing rules without informing others of the rule is a bad idea.
None of Skerrit's posts, from a legalistic point of view (which is something that some players had to contend with earlier and left the AL over), actually provides an official rule change. Those posts state that the rules change was intended, and the rule change will be updated "shortly". "Shortly" never happened; consequently, the official rules were never updated to reflect the intended change. The AL FAQ superceding the ALPG makes sense. Post #29 of thread #419891 superceding the ALPG doesn't make sense; for that matter, any forum post, which includes post #3 of thread #4229791, superceding published rules material doesn't make sense in light of the existence of the AL FAQ.
The official rules material disallows it; there is nothing in the AL FAQ to counter the ALPG. If the administration didn't feel that the rule was good enough to issue a FAQ and WotC didn't feel the rule is good enough to update in the ALPG, then some undisclosed rule, to the general public, isn't... Wow, you know I'm just amazed... I am just amazed. |
| #6KalaniJul 13, 2015 7:41:16 | Those were the original discussions on the issue. The campaign staff has no control over the players guide. None. All we can do is create a list of changes, corrections and suggestions and hope wizards includes them in next seasons guide.
The reason we never released a FAQ about it was because we were waiting for the supposed update that was coming "soon" but never materialized.
The reason it is mandatory to rebuild starting gear is because of the fact that characters must use the starting gear from their class and background (as stated in the PG).
If either of those change, and a character does not rebuild their starting gear - the character has illegal starting packages (as they don't match the ones for their class and/or background) |
| #7Coredump00Jul 13, 2015 11:47:59 | On one hand, this was the story as of early March. On the other hand, WotC never chose to update, so we have no idea if it is still 'the rules' or if WotC decided to put them off.... or whatever...
Luckily, it just doesn't matter. We are talking about a few gp worth of gear. With or without official WotC word, I am pretty confidant the 'abuse' of this will be very very minor, and easily checked by DMs. Likewise I can't forsee any DM's unfairly punishing players on this, its just too little to really worry about.

| #8KalaniJul 13, 2015 12:09:38 | Agreed. The only abuse that could occur, is if someone decided to sell all their gear, then rebuild their character (to get new starting gear) several times over to amass some wealth. Fortunately, the intent is that you need to account for the entire cost of your gear. If you sell some of your starting gear (eg. a longbow) and then rebuild - you need to account for the longbow....In this case, that means you need to account for 25gp worth of gear (either by selling off some of your new gear, or by removing 25gp from your GP total). |
