| #1TheSethGreySep 29, 2014 16:10:55 | So, I've been running encounters for my local game store, and I wasn't sure exactly how I should be recording the DM character rewards on my log sheet, for example what do I put for session number, and DM name/DCI and date. Also do I put anything for sessions where the party doesn't get through a episode? |
| #2TyranthraxusSep 29, 2014 20:00:24 | Seth: Ive only run Expeditions so far : Ive run Secrets of Sokol Keep x1 and Defiance in Phlan x3.
What I do i take a normal Log sheet. Write DM CREDIT down the side in the margin next to the sessions I do. Its as much to remind me and so I can show to my dm (If I ever get to play).
Session number for me is a increasing number. The first session a character 'plays' in is number 1, then the next is 2 and so on . You put your own DCI number there and I sign my sheets (instead of printing my name). We only really have to worry about Downtime and exp columns then as Unless we play we are stuck on whatever gold we started the character with , same with renown and Magic items.
So I have 2 log sheets for my Lady Fighter Valeria Darkhope.. The first scenario I was was Defiance and Valeria got 300 exp and it was Session 1. Then I ran Secrets of Sokol Keep which was 300 exp and session 2. Then I ran Defiance and got 200 exp and it is session 3. Finally Defiance again for 300 exp and this is session 4.
Ill let you work out the downtime there.
Remember the restriction of a character not playing the same Scenario twice does NOT apply when you are dming. You could create a DM Credit character who only gets credit everytime you run Defiance. Valeria is now a Level 3 Fighter (and Ive gotta decide what speciality she is going to be)
Hope that helps |
| #3TyranthraxusSep 29, 2014 20:03:07 | In terms of encounters, my DM just said that it refers to the number of sesions played as part of encounters. So your first 2 hours might be session 1, then next week you play for 3 hours and thats session 2 and so on.
In regards to players not getting through an episode, you still technically ran it so the DM would still get the exp and other benefits. |

| #5KevNeffOct 09, 2014 5:49:33 | Can I do this: 1, I Run DDEX1-1 and get XP for a character 2. I then play this character in an event and get XP 3. I then run DDEX 1-2 and get XP. (Can I apply this to the same character?
Someone said no, that once you got normal XP you could not add DM XP amymore to that character.
Want to make sure I don't mess things up.
Thanks

| #6SkerritOct 09, 2014 6:02:48 | Your first example is correct. There is no rule that you cannot use DM credit on a PC that has played in events. |

| #8PauperOct 14, 2014 13:50:08 | While the ALPG isn't clear on the subject, my understanding would be that, if you apply DM credit from a module to a character, you cannot then play that character *in the same module*; so running DDEX 1-2 and claiming the DM reward for a character would prevent that character from playing in DDEX1-2, but not in any other Adventurers League adventure that hasn't had a DM award applied.

| #9TyranthraxusOct 14, 2014 21:49:10 | Incorrect. I played Defiance In Phlan with the same character who had received DM credit for it earlier.
Seriosuly, this is not this hard to understand.
A character can play any scenario once only You can run a scenario as many times as you want and apply all that DM credit to the same character that has played it. |
| #10TheBreenOct 15, 2014 0:45:24 | FWIW, here's the official word (from the AL Players Guide, p. 5)
|
| #11PauperOct 17, 2014 10:02:52 | This seems both unclear and inconsistent.
It is unclear because, while the ALPG does specify that a DM can play in an adventure that she previously ran, it doesn't specify whether that DM can play it with a character who earned XP from that adventure when she ran the adventure. It would be clearer to say one of the following:
"If you run an adventure as Dungeon Master, you can play it afterward using any character that did not receive a DM award from running that adventure." (If the intent is to not allow DM PCs to 'double dip' on adventures.)
"If you run an adventure as Dungeon Master, you can play it afterward. You may use any of your Adventurers League characters, even if they received a DM award from running that adventure previously." (If the intent is to allow DMs to play adventures with PCs that already received XP from that adventure.)
It is inconsistent, because players aren't allowed to play the same adventure twice with the same character. Based on Tyranthraxus's statement, it would currently be acceptable to have played all 5 scenarios of Defiance in Phlan at GenCon, then run the full adventure five times at a local game store, applying the DM awards to that same character. So while no player could be higher than level 2 just from DDEX1-1, a DM could be level 4 from just that one adventure (since the admonition that a player cannot play DDEX1-1 with a character higher than level 2 doesn't restrict the DM from applying the DM award to a higher-than-level 2 character).
I understand we want to reward DMs for running AL games, but simple fairness would suggest that DMs should follow the spirit of the replay rules when applying their DM awards.

| #12Ewspy87Oct 17, 2014 11:23:58 | I don't see what the big confusion or discussion is. You DM, you get XP, and you apply that to a character, any character. Characters can not play the same adventure twice...end of story, have a nice day. If you DM a particular adventure and choose to play it as a character then go ahead. I wouldn't, but that's just because I like to be surprised.
At the store I DM at, I have been DMing for encounters and playing for expeditions. For me there has been no overlap of adventures yet. The XP I get DMing is applied to a character that plays in totally different adventures. Frankly, I have downloaded but not read any of the expeditions adventures for the sole fact that I like them to be a surprise when i play. I downloaded them in case I need the material later on for one of my DMed games. Now if the DM takes an old adventure and changes a great deal up the second time through, I would play it. |

| #16UthracOct 17, 2014 12:14:56 | I agree with SteveMND. DMs collect a pool of XP in little Episode/Adventure chunks. They then apply those chunks as they see fit. Great DM reward. I never have to play a "boring" Level 1 or Level 2 character again.
To Pauper's point, the DM who ran DDEX1-1 twice got 1,000 XP for a single character. The player who played at the DDEX1-1 table once and then, while the DM was re-running DDEX1-1, played DDEX1-2, now has 1,100 XP. (Note that DDEX isn't a great example because the players and DM get the same XP as an exception, though Encounters Episode 1 has the same 300 XP cap for both ... in any case. .. ) BEST case scenario is that, for the same amount of play time, the DM has 100 XP LESS than the player.
Another example:
DM goes to a convention and, to minimize prep time, runs DDEX1-2 three times. Applies all to the same character (rather than needing 3 different characters ... ????) and has a Level 3 PC with 900 XP.
During the same time, a player plays DDEX1-2, DDEX1-3, and DDEX1-4. All with the same character and has a Level 3 (and a half) PC with 1800 XP (and some gold and maybe a magic item and a renown point or two.)
I'm completely okay with this. (Honestly, if people want to "power game the system" by running enough adventures to reach Level 4 all with DM credit ... IMHO they have quite well earned it.) |
| #17PauperOct 20, 2014 7:32:06 | Hadn't thought about convention play, where you might run the same adventure repeatedly in a short span of time.
Still, I'm likely going to abide by the spirit of the rule for my own AL characters -- I'm a bit of an alt-o-holic anyway -- and not apply DM awards from a mod to a character who has played or is likely to play that mod.
