Ring of Evasion

I know that some item in the module gain a small bonus in addition to their description from the DMG. Like the cloak of elvenkind which in the DMG offer advantage on stealth and disadvantage on perception to see the wearer, if you gain the cloak from the DDEX module it also gain endure element property. A splintmail +1 also glow near orc etc...

But the ring of evasion, the bonus in the module is big: gaining advantage VS dex save AND the evasion feature (as per the rogue and monk lvl 7). Then from the DMG you simply auto succeed on 3 dex save per day.

Is the ring of evasion got errata into just auto success on 3 dex save, or does it really gain both abilities making it the most uncommon item in the game?

Which DDEX module grants the ring of evasion?  I want to look at the wording.

The ring glows in moonlight - that is it's only quirk (I have the ring on my main PC, and unlike some of the earlier certificates - the quirk is clearly written on the certificate, as is its physical description).

Kalani is correct -- the ring is given out in an early Season 1 module, and its description in the module only notes its quirk of glowing in moonlight.

Unless there are different versions of the published module, I don't see where QuertyAzerty's text is stated in the module. (In fact, the abilities of the ring aren't even noted on the creature listed in the module as wearing the ring.)

The first published version of the Ring of Evasion (in the DM Basic Rules version 0.1) listed it as:

Ring of Evasion
Ring, uncommon (requires attunement)
You have advantage on Dexterity saving throws while you wear this ring. In addition, whenever you make a Dexterity saving throw to take only half damage from an effect, you instead take no damage if you succeed on the saving throw, and half damage if you fail.

It was subsequently erratted to:

Ring of Evasion

Ring, rare (requires attunement)

This ring has 3 charges, and it regains 1d3 expended charges daily at dawn. When you fail a Dexterity saving throw while wearing it, you can use your reaction to expend 1 of its charges to succeed on that saving throw instead.

The 'old version' no longer functions that way at all. Use the current version in the DMG.

(I always thought the quiet errata on this was super weird.)

I suspect that is because the game assumes you use the most current version of the Basic Rules at all times.... The DM Basic Rules is currently up to V3 for example.... It self-errata's the previous text as it is an updated document.

I have the adventure text in front of me - the items description is as follows:

  • Ring of Evasion: This intricate thin silver ring is decorated with tiny opalescent stones and glows with a pale radiance (dim light in a 5-foot radius) while in the moonlight. A description of this item can be found int he basic rules or the Player's Handbook.

I find it odd that it states the item can be found in the PHB - it should state DMG (this is an error). With that being said however, it is my understanding that the OPs DM was using the outdated DM Basic Rules. The game assumes you always use the most current version of the Basic Rules.

I vaguely remember the original entry from the playtest documents and that it was the playtest version that made it into the DM Basic Rules (v1). I however knew that any differences between the DM Basic rules and the DMG would be corrected upon release of the DMG. I don't use the Basic Rules myself - and always use the entries in the DMG when describing items to my players.

My bad sorry I was going from memory and you are right, the evasion feature was from the basic rule V1.0, so when it got replace with the DMG then it really lost that ability. the module only give it a glowing effect.

Was the reasoning behind the change ever explained?

Assuming that, I don't think there is any official source that details what WOTC was thinking when they issue any specific erratta and I don't think there is any reason you would need it to use the erratta.

You could ask WotC customer support. They probably don't know. Most likely it's because some designer changed the way the item worked before the DMG was published.

Why's it matter why?
