| #1demon_idolSep 07, 2015 15:30:47 | It has come up a few times in our adventurer's league games that player's want to use each other's spell books and scrolls to add spells to their spell books? What are the rules with reguards to this?
1. Can a player use another player's spell scroll, to add a spell to their spell book/ritual book? Is the scroll expended?
2. Can players copy spells from one another's spell books/ritual books into their own spell books/ritual books? If so, does this cost downtime days? Does it cost downtime days if the players and the adventure give time for such things to happen in game (which is admittedly rare in adventurer's league modules)?
Thanks! |

| #5KalaniSep 07, 2015 21:12:26 | Enevhar is correct, which is why I said this is a situation the rules do not cover. However, given the fact that you can cast scrolls on other players, and can give other players potions (esp. healing potions), I don't see why this would be disallowed. |

I seem to remember that if you wanted to copy a spell from another players spellbook after an adventure, you would *both* need to spend an equal amount of downtime days. That isn't mentioned/clarified in the FAQ. Does anyone (Kalani?) know if that is still in effect? |
| #7KalaniSep 07, 2015 21:51:19 | That is correct. If copying spells outside of game, both characters must spend an equal number of downtime days. I will mention this to the admins and see about getting the FAQ entries (quoted above) ammended. |

| #9KalaniSep 07, 2015 22:56:18 | You can give them potions to self-administer, but if they don't use them they must be returned by the end of the adventure. |

| #11TyranthraxusSep 08, 2015 18:31:16 | Sadly Ive yet to have 2 Wizards on the same table at the same time but as Kalani said above I wouldnt allow a Wizard to loan another Wizard a scroll and let them scribe it out of the scenario.
|
| #12Byakugan01Sep 10, 2015 0:22:02 | A player can borrow a sword and then that sword might get destroyed by some effect....Magic items work the same way. The difference being that the wizard who scribed the scroll gets to keep his knowlege.
It's specifically part of the rules...a group can find and save scrolls throughout the adventure, then those scrolls can be used by other people later on. |
| #13TiaNadiezjaSep 10, 2015 8:24:35 | Huh. Odd question. If I myself had two wizard PCs (let's say one from Elemental Evil and one from Rage of Demons), could one copy the other's spellboom using downtime? |

CORRECTION Sorry, I misread the original question (my bad). That will teach me to answer questions when I am tired lol.
The correct answer is as follows: In order to copy spells from another wizard, both players must be at the same table. Then, the players may opt for one or more of the following options:
You cannot copy spells from one PC to another unless you both participate in the same adventure (and only gain a narrow window before/during/afterward with which to do so). |

| #18KalaniSep 10, 2015 13:18:04 | There have been numerous discussions about this on the FB groups and here in the forum. The admins and RCs have consistantly said that you both must be at the same table in order to copy spells. |

| #20KalaniSep 10, 2015 15:26:21 | I didn't keep a link myself, and it was about 6mo ago so I highly doubt it would be easily searched on FB. I could always double check to the requirements with the admins however, but I am almost 100% positive that is the answer.

| #22KalaniSep 10, 2015 19:23:22 | Not all of those discussions were in the public forums Coredump.... The ones I am thinking of may have been in the LC forums |
| #23Coredump00Sep 10, 2015 21:59:49 | Sure I get that. So yeah, if you ever find a link, or a screen cap, or whatever... of an admin stating that as an actual restriction, it would be great if you could share it. I would be curious about an RC saying it, but since they can't make policy, its more of a curiousity than anything else.

| #27Coredump00Sep 11, 2015 18:55:56 | Interesting.
Also weird that we can swap magic items without being in the same adventure, but can't copy a spell - using downtime days - without being in the same adventure. But okay.

| #28TyranthraxusSep 15, 2015 21:04:04 | i have a secondary question here.
A fair few scenarios in Season 2 have been giving out Spellbooks. Now I understand these are not permanent magical items (at least not in the way the Expeditions scenarios work). They are an option essentially for the Wizards in the group to learn some new spells, if they have thw downtime and Gold to do so.
I am however still a little confused on how this works
A) Lets say a character play B a scenario that gives a character who kills a mage a spellbook the mage has. The spells are from 1st and second level. From my understanding the book never goes away. So in 4 scenarios time ,the book is still hanging around and Charlie the Mage decides to finally scribe a 2nd level spell from it (he now has both the time and money).
Am I doing things right here? Can that spellbook last beyong the game it was found? It cannot be traded (as there is no cert). Could a character essentially have the book 'forever'
B) Lets say there are 3 wizards in the same group (ive had 2 at one point, but never 3). The same scenario B is played and all 3 wizards kill the opposing mage leaving a spellbook behind. Now its a listed item, which means to me only one player can get it. I expect a bun fight over who gets the spellbook, but in the meantime Im assuming here that all 3 can scribe if they can afford it when they find it paying the appropriate costs, but only one Wizard there can leave at the end of the Scenario with it.
Issue: Im expecting a little cross players here (the wizards who dont get it). However its scribing from these captured spellbooks esssentially the same as scribing from a fellow Wizards spellbook ? So say all 3 play in Scenario 3. The other 2 wizards now see that Wizard 1 has both his own spellbook and the captured spellbook. The opportunity is there to scribe from both? Correct?

| #29KalaniSep 15, 2015 21:26:53 | A) Spellbooks are permanent yet mundane items that a single character gets to keep. It is added to the characters list of mundane items with the list of spells in it. They can be copied into their own spellbook at any time thereafter. The could also loan it to another spellcaster in the same group for the same purpose. As a rule, I tend to record spellbooks on my logsheet with the list of spells, and on my character sheet as: Spellbook (DDEX x-y) or if it belonged to a specific NPC, [NPC's] Spellbook (DDEX x-y). I also list the exact spells each such spellbook contains in my notes section.
B) All three of the spellcasters can spend time scribing spells from the spellbook, but only one of them gets to keep it. The remaining 2 could however, use Downtime Spell Scribing for the remaining spells for that session only (if they run out of GP or DT, they would be limited to how many spells they could copy). It is a mundane item and does not count against your magic item total. To date, there have not been any magical spellbooks in AL.
Yes, scribing spells from a captured spellbook is essentially identical to scribing from a scroll or a fellow PC. |
| #30TyranthraxusSep 15, 2015 21:31:49 | Thanks Kalani. That addressed all of my concerns and reinforced that Ive been doing it right so far. |
| #31Coredump00Sep 16, 2015 9:33:58 | There are only a couple of grey areas.
1) As I recall, we have at least one Admin saying that both casters must spend the downtime days while one copies; and a more recent admin statement saying that only the one copying needs to spend DtD. OTOH, DtD are a pretty unused commodity, so it isn't a big deal either way.
2) You can't give gold (wealth) to another PC, but there is no rule against trading or buying items from another PC. So I can't see any issue with selling the spellbook for 50gp. (The cost of a spellbook) |
