Rules regarding crossbows

I want to make sure I understand the rules correctly for crossbow expert.

 

Using a crossbow with the crossbow expert feat - you can use your multi-attack as a fighter. It sounds like you need a free hand to load the crossbow precluding the ability to use a shield (since it takes a round to don a shield you couldn't take it on and off without spending full rounds there).

 

Questions:

1. Am I correct that you cannot use a shield and load a crossbow the same round?

2. If you have a loaded crossbow entering a combat, can you shoot an extra shot as a bonus action if you have the crossbow expert feat?

3. It looks like you cannot fire more than two times as your attack and bonus action using the crossbow expert feat (it says it lets you reload once for free). You could shoot a loaded crossbow, reload, then shoot again as a bonus action. Am I reading this correctly?
