From http://wintfan.baldmangames.com/Events/events.html#DNDAL
Magic Item Trading Post: Fai Chen’s Fantastical Fair has made its way to Phlan, and rumors abound of the wonders he has for trade in his mysterious cart! Bring your unwanted certified items to him, and trade for another item, or just ask him for some of the latest gossip. A special activity debuting at Winter Fantasy! Slot 3, 6, 7, 9, and 10 (and various other random times).
|
| #6CyberqatJan 21, 2015 11:15:24 | So to be clear no one said anything about wanting to buy magic items, just sell them. punishing the players for not going rather then rewarding them for going. |
| #7SkerritJan 21, 2015 11:19:15 | We want to encourage people to take the items that are relavent to their character rather than insisting on rolling on all items (so they can sell them and not have them count against their magic item total but still get the gold). If an item is useless to your PC, let it lie. |
| #8UndrhilJan 21, 2015 18:06:34 | I'm kind of curious what items they have that are useless to them. Going through the official AL mods, there aren't very many magic items to be had. I haven't gone all the way through HotDQ yet, not have I played through Lost Mines. However, the few magic items we have found (a venomous dagger, a +1 longbow, +1 longsword (I think)) seem to be universally useful. And, if the PC who took the item couldn't use it, was there someone else there that could have? If so, then why didn't that person get it?
As far as the magic item trading post idea: I think it would be far better to include such a thing into the EPIC mods (which are convention play only, anyway) instead of just doing something for Winter Fantasy and *maybe* doing it again for another con down the road. |

*any* fighter would be greatly benefited by that dagger. Once a day you get a good chance of causing a bunch of extra damage *and* forcing disadvantage. Yes Please! *any* fighter would be beneftied by that greatsword. +2 to hit, +2d6+2 to damage? *and* cast spells? *and* prevent healing?
I wish I was in your party, my battle-axe and shield paladin would gladly take both of those, and be *way* deadlier. Toss in Vow of Enmity and I would be taking out bad guys way above my paygrade.
Now the +1 Chain mail is a bit more of an issue... but thats true for most magic armor in any edition of DnD.... why +1 chain when Splint is so much easier and cheaper...?? +1 Chain Shirt makes some sense.
Now, I would be more upset about the dearth of magic items, or at least the ones you didn't have to get really lucky to get. But the ones you got, seem pretty darn useful.

| #30AvrossJan 24, 2015 5:55:14 | Our store group has run across exactly one magic item...a wand of detect magic. This is after playing through the Encounters HOTDQ (ch 1-3) and Expeditions (DDEX 1-1 through 1-3)
It sat on the table for 2 weeks....seriously, I couldn't get anyone to claim it. Even though it would have relieved them of the need to ever prepare a very utiliarian spell, not even the spellcasters would touch it, for fear that they might lose out on a "real" item in a few weeks.
Personally, I *get* the concept of sticking with the prescribed loot drops. For organized play, it makes sense *not* to change things. Across 1,000 game tables, what one DM thinks is a simple swap that completely makes sense and maintains balance at his table could be something that another DM thinks is completely Monty Haul. (Ok, maybe that's drastic, but you get the point.)
The OP never mentioned obtaining different items, merely the idea that some items would not be useful for certain groups.
Presumably, the AL developers are in process of reviewing the AL Player Guide for the next season. It would be nice for them to at least consider how an item that isn't useful for a given group could be traded off. I accept that it would need to be extremely limited...otherwise you might have a crafty group trade in the +1 chain in order to get enough money to outfit the entire group in full plate. |
| #31KalaniJan 24, 2015 9:07:38 | If the admins do include options for trading magic items, I believe it should be limited to the following:
This limits the monty haul, as players would be exchanging items with secondary benefits, and/or utilitarian effects for generic +1 or +2 items with no special abilities. Many players would gladly take up this offer, as it would mean outfitting their character with a weapon or armor of their choice.

| #35QwertyAzertyJan 26, 2015 9:00:34 | would be interesting if that tradinf post was available in smaller convention as well. There is no way that I could EVER go to the US to go the the huge Gen Con and meet that trading post guys, I don't have the money for the plane ticket (500$), the hotel(300$ for the week end), restaurant convention entry fee etc... but the little convention they are going to have next month in my town that one I can easily go there, since it will cost me only 5$ in gas to get there, 10$ for parking, 20$ for the entry fee ticket and I can bring my lunch.
Is there a way we could have that trading post guy in our smaller convention. otherwise IT IS NOT THE SAME GAME EXPERIENCE if we miss out on the cool stuff. WE already miss out on the Epic adventure (but that I can kind of understand since there is no way we could have the 100 players needed to clear the Epic) but the trading post, you don'T need 200 player to make the trading post a good experience? you need one employee to disguise himself into a misterious magic vendor guys, givee him some item certificated, and at least 1 player with a cert to visit him and trade.
Allow smaller convention to also have the trading post, it's really unfair that player living in more remote region cannot share the same experience. Maybe if WotC would make there book for free, I could save enought money to go the convention every 3 years, but since I have to buy the book to play, (I want more option then a high elf evocation wizard, a dwarven cleric of life a human champion fighter without feats, and a hafling boring thief rogue. |
| #36SkerritJan 26, 2015 11:17:13 | There are some discussions in progress on how we might spread the trading post around. It will probably not be something every single "convention" can get (i.e. my 5 best friends and I register as a conevntion, no gimmie certs!), but it might be possible that some form of it will make other rounds. We're still pondering logistics to see if its possible. |
| #37Coredump00Jan 26, 2015 11:57:48 | How does this sound, are there any drawbacks someone can think of?
At the end of each adventure, there is a 'pool' of magic items to choose from. Any player may give up as many of his/her magic items and add them into the pool. Now the pool is divided up using the standard procedure using the players currently possessed magic items.
The idea behind this is to allow folks to take less-useful items without fear they cant' get what they want later.
My example is the Tankard of Plenty in HotDQ. It would be a fun magic item to have on occasion. Not *really* fun, but at least interesting. But... is it worth not getting a later, better, item?
With the above proposal, I could toss it back into the pool, and have a shot at the +1 longsword... |
