I'm looking for some clarification as to what the first part of the Shield Master feat. It says "If you take the Attack action on your turn, you can use a bonus action to try to shove a creature within 5 feet of you with you shield."

Also, how would I "[...] try to shove a creature [...]"? Would it just be a contested Strength check?

That means I can push a creature adjacent to me 5 feet away from my current location, right?

Shield Master lets you shove a creature when you take the Attack action, which is a Strength (Athletics) check contested by the target’s Strength (Athletics) or Dexterity (Acrobatics) check to either knockit prone or push it 5 feet away from you.

PHB195 Shoving a Creature: Using the Attack action, you can make a special melee attack to shove a creature, either to knock it prone or push it away from you. If you’re able to make multiple attacks with the Attack action, this attack replaces one o f them. The target of your shove must be no more than one size larger than you, and it must be within your reach. You make a Strength (Athletics) check contested by the target’s Strength (Athletics) or Dexterity (Acrobatics) check (the target chooses the ability to use). If you win the contest, you either knock the target prone or push it 5 feet away from you.
