scroll and spell book

Now  How open are get   wizards  spells for there spell book?  say a player want find a  wizard using a down time action  like spell service he can learn that way. Wizards are get  screwed ; spells is there best treasure. since they cant make scroll you hose that way.   I had a player ask  spell book avability buy  1st or 2nd lvl spells  during a mod.  Whats rules  on Dm   put in a scroll  shop  and spending the down time action?

i understand this is a complicated  issue but   hose people leave a bad taste and we loose  players.

i understand magic items are rare i have no problem that  scrolls are wizards best friends.

Scrolls found through adventuring can be added to a wizard's spellbook. Wizards also get "auto-additions" when they gain levels.

In the future, adding additional spells may be something added to the downtime list of things to do. As of right now, the only ways for a wizard to add to his/her spellbook are:

• Gain a level.

• Find a scroll in an Adventurer's League adventure and pay the cost to copy it into the spellbook.

Evil Mouse: The 3rd option is to access another party members spellbook during the game (and hope they dont have all the same spells as you).  However according to RAW this isnt legal (however Im postive Ive seen a response from the campaign admins who admitted this was probably a good idea). Considering the prohibitive cost associated with scribing, i would hope the cost is reduced to the copying to a 2nd spellbook level . (Essentially the large cost is copying from scrolls to the spellbook, not copying from spellbook to secondary spellbook)

If this is indeed rectified , I would hope to see a significantly bigger Players guide for the next Encounters season to address this as currently the Wizard is the only class that basically has a built in gold cost to flesh out their options.

Copying spells into your [Wizard] spellbook is covered in the Player's Handbook, in the "Your Spellbook" sidebar on page 114. It is not necessary to find a magic scroll with a spell inscribed on it.

"You might find other spells during your adventures. You could discover a spell recorded on a scroll

in an evil wizard's chest, for example, or in a dusty tome in an ancient library." (emphasis added)

So clearly, you can copy a spell from a book. This (presumably) needs to happen during downtime in AL, as it costs time and money.

2 spells per level gained is faster than other arcane casters on top of spells known and the best ritual casting. Scrolls and spell books make good adventure hooks when they are not easily acquired, and spending resources to copy them isn't different than extremely expensive armor. Downtime research is likely regardless.

If you are using the "maximum gold pieces" starting wealth/equipment option instead of the default gear from your class and background, does a wizard have to pay for an empty spellbook? Does she have to pay to inscribe her initial spells in it?

You will also potentially find spellbooks as treasure in some adventures. No, I'm not going to tell which, but some are or will be out there.

Or you stole your Mentors backup Spellbook. That could be a great flaw for your character.

I use the maximum gold piece option for all my characters. For my Wizard character I bought his spellbook (50gp, if I remember correctly). My reasoning was that if a spellbook is included in the starting equipment option, and I didn't use that option, that I wouldn't have a spellbook unless I bought one.

I didn't—and still don't—read the "you have a spellbook…" phrase to indicate that you have a FREE spellbook if you don't take the starting equpiment option. Just like my cleric didn't get a free holy symbol and my rogue didn't get a free set of thieve's tools.

Now if someone official wants to tell me that your starting spellbook is free even if you take the maximum gold piece option, I'll trade that 50gp in for a potion of healing.

That's nice as a "Whiteroom" approach, but my answer is one that doesn't exist in a vacuum.

Still, it's only 50 GP right?

Problem is find anouther wizard at table  who doesnt have spells you have. Forgotten releams  is a heavy magic place  water deep there wizards who sell spells.
