Hello Friends-

I just picked up Hoard of the Dragon Queen this weekend., and intend to go through it with an at home group for AL. Can any of you experienced in the module gage for me how long it will take the characters to get through it? I am assuming even though we are a home group, that we are still limited to one Wednesday session per week, to maintain compliance with public play. What happens next season if we aren't finished? Is the next season going to be limited to the starter set module and Rise of Tiamat?

you cannot play AL group at home, since they are suppose to be in a public place. But you can bring your home character in a Al game.

From my understanding, the currentl rule simply stated that your character for a certain season is limited to the book that where release when the season got release (so you cannot play a race or class in the DMG for HotDQ since the DMg wasn't release when HotDQ was released.

Then if that character is of a legal level, he can join an adventure from the next season. so if you reach lvl 4 in HotDQ then you want to join a tier 1 adventure (between lvl 1-4) in season 2 you shoul dbe ok.

For the time needed to run the game, IIRC correctly, you should be able to see the estiated number of session needed to run each episode. then if you have a good group you might go way faster, if you have a slower group who like to RP a lot then you might take a lot more time then the estimate time from the module.

Play Hoard of the Dragon Queen

This is recommended for casual D&D players or those who want to experience the main storyline through game play. If you finish the whole adventure, surviving characters will be around 15th level! You can do this as a part of the D&D Encounters program in stores or play at home. Either way, as long as you track your play sessions on a D&D Adventurers League logsheet, it’s all official

it might not be adventure league by the stritcest of rules, but they can still play the modules if they buy them.

If you only plan on playing at home, I see little reason to play in the AL. If your players at all wish to play in organized play, it's worth tracking things through the AL.

Since you are starting late, would there be any harm in playing multiple times per week to catch up? I don't know but I don't think so.

You are not limited to playing on Wednesdays for casual AL play at home. Only Encounters, which are 2 hour sessions of HotDQ, need to be scheduled and played on Wednesdays in public (usually a sponsoring game store). At home, as long as you use the AL Player's Guide rules and run Lost Mines of Phandelver, Hoard of the Dragons Queen, and Rise of Tiamat, you can play any day of the week! Just log the character info and these characters can play in Encouters, Expeditions, and Epics as long as they are in the correct tier.

Thanks Steve, I think you're the first person to point out that I have confused Encounters with the Adventurers League. Of course we are already playing at home and have been for some time; the point of wanting to track our progress is to be able to jump into public organized play but not be confined to it.
