So sure, as always, "it's up to the DM" but AL has plenty of specific restrictions (discussed in various threads here) that supersede DM discretion.
A ruling in this particular situation would certainly helpful. If a character were vamped at one table where he was allowed to play then showed up at another where the DM seized control for the evening he'd be understandably upset at driving to the venue only to sit and watch for several hours.
Since there is already a published adventure in play this season with a vampire it's not entirely unreasonable that it could come up.
I could see that perhaps a Lawful Evil character, presumably in the Lord's Alliance or Zhentarim, who would experience no change in alignment, might be less likely to loose control.
Maybe a Lawful Neutral or even a true Neutral character could remain under player control after the alignment shift
What about other alignments? If the player is wiling (or eager) to RP the new alignment?
Obviously, some might think that alignment is irrelevant and rely on some other game-balance or meta-game factors.
Regardless, in an AL game some kind of consistent rule from the League would probably be helpful. Either it's automatic loss of control until reversed (easiest to adjudicate?) or the player keeps his character with the new advantages AND disadvantages without fear of another DM confiscating his character.
Has anyone seen any official info? |

| #4PauperDec 19, 2014 14:35:53 | Since vampirism is apparently reversable by being killed and brought back to life ("[T]he DM might take control of the character until the vampirism is reversed with a wish spell or the character is killed and brought back to life."), any character who dies during an encounter with a vampire would likely not end up a vampire spawn or a vampire, as being brought back to life (either via raise dead or Faction Charity) would cure the condition.
While it's admirable that you want to avoid spoilers, the reality is that the AL admins don't necessarily access to all the AL-legal adventures -- some folks didn't have DMGs until well after the early release date, for instance. It's probably a good idea to cite your source so that someone in authority can check the actual encounter to see if that provides any useful information for what guidance the admins want to provide. (The admins, for the most part, are volunteers and not WotC employees, so you shouldn't assume they already know everything that's in, say, Rise of Tiamat.) You can put the information in spoiler blocks

Characters can only be created and advanced utlizing the rule books stated in the ALPG: Nothing from the MM or DMG is allowed for use in character creation and/or advancement during this storyline season. An AL character that died from a vampire bite (and was buried for a day to rise as a vampire spawn the next night) would no longer be under a player's control. If that character was not raised from the dead they would effectively be removed from the game as a character, and the player would create a new character. |

Your character is infected with vampirism.
You gain the Drow racial Sunlight-O-Phobe power.
You gain the power Feed (at-will, melee, 1d4+STRmod) which you must use at least 1/long rest to attack (1) an enemy in combat (2) any warm-blooded creature of size bigger than Tiny or (3) a 5 lb chunk of raw (or cooked rare = nearly raw) red meat with the juices still in it Failure to Feed in this way causes one level of Exhaustion which cannot be removed by normal rest. Each time you successfully Feed on a victim it removes one existing level of Exhaustion gained via the above penalty. (or maybe the mechanism should be death saving throws?)
I'll have to watch the Classic Dracula movie to see what other powers might open up as higher levels; probably one per tier. |
