What rules should be used when building our own characters for the starter set adventure?

With the basic rules released, there are a fair number of options available. I assume that AL will be using point buy for ability scores like every other form of organized play has done in the past. The basic rules have default equipment listed for each class but has an alternative to purchase starting equipment, listing variable starting gold. Should we use the average, max or some other value for starting characters?

Or should we just stick to the pregens until the AL guide is out?

I can only speak for the FLGS but we are using all of the options until told otherwise, point buy, roll your own, or the "default" array. We are also allowing you to roll for starting gold. I certainly bristled at using any of the starting gear set-ups. Until the AL guide is out I would think anything goes.

Well going back to the final Living Greyhawk Campaign Guide that had players use the max starting gold for class which seems reasonable. In 5e that would be 200 starting gold for fighter and cleric, 160 for rogue and wizard. Enough for a fighter to afford Enough to afford studded leather, scale male, or chain mail, shield,  and greatsword, and still have enough for generic gear and walking around money.

Your choice of point buy or standard array (http://dndadventurersleague.org/).

I'd think average starting gold would be better than max.

That would be 100 gold for wizards and rogues (4d4 avg roll = 10) and 125 for fighters and clerics (5d4 average = 12.5).

Still plenty of gold for starting gear -- a fighter could start with chain mail and a greatsword, for instance -- without having 'starter' characters walking around with potions of healing, just because they can afford them.

You may choose the starting equipment for your class and background, or use max gold for your class to buy equipment piecemeal.

Just a heads up, there has been a slight delay in the rules document (I think it might be layout/formatting issues). Looks like it will be a day or two. I will let you know when we hear more.

FLGS now reminds me of your "FNSM" (Friendly Neighborhood Spider Man).

Wow.

How did I not know this?

Oh Right... because I've only played with my friends in my tiny lil' country town without a game store.

Had a player tonight for Lost Mine that had a cleric with 21 Hit Points (he "rolled" for his 2nd-level HP - he was only two points over) and ability scores that included a 19, and two 16s. He rolled those per the Basic Rules. Meanwhile, the rest of the table is playing with pre-gens from the Starter Set. Not exactly equitable. I let it fly for this session (my first to DM at the store) and shared with him the Adventurers League Player's Guide and the Basic Rules and asked him to make adjustments for next session and forward.

Anyway, the Adventurers League Player's Guide references the forthcoming Player's Handbook's customizing ability scores varient rule, but not the same variant in the Basic Rules. The later has the variant rule on pages 7-8 with the cost table on page 9 (which is odd, since the cost table is under the Armor Class section). No big deal, but thought it might be a good idea for the ALPG to reference the Basic Rules customizing ability scores variant.

Happy gaming.

"Your rules," as in the rule books allowed for your storyline. So you can buy any equipment from the books allowed for the Tyranny of Dragons storyline (since it is currently the only one).
