#1 CorrinAvatan Nov 16, 2014 17:06:14	So, I finally moved to a place that has D&D Encounters, but now that I can do it, I don't know some things:   1.  I'm coming in in the middle of an adventure, I would believe, so I guess I start at level 1, while everyone around me is higher level?   2.  Are there any options that are not legal for Encounters play?   3.  If I am playing lower level, do I get more gold for the adventure (as in Pathfinder Society), or am I just getting a split of what everyone else gets?

#3 Kalani Nov 16, 2014 22:25:28	All of the answers to your questions is found in the Adventurer's League Players Guide but I will paraphrase the information below.   1.  I'm coming in in the middle of an adventure, I would believe, so I guess I start at level 1, while everyone around me is higher level? That is correct. You will begin play at 1st level and will need to track your characters progress on your Adventure Log. Keep in mind that you will only be able to play in the first Tier (1-4) until you hit 5th level. Episode 5 is the start of tier 2 in HotDQ, so you will not be able to participate in Episodes 5-7 until you hit 5th level (or above). 2.  Are there any options that are not legal for Encounters play? Stats: You must use 27 point buy when creating your character. Alignment: Any good or Neutral. Lawful Evil is allowed, but is restricted to Lords Alliance and Zhentarim factions. Races/Classes: Any races/classes from the PHB or Basic Rules. You can use the human variant option if you choose. You cannot use optional rules from the DMG such as the death domain, or the oathbreaker paladin. Domains: If you are a cleric, you must choose the domain available to your deity, or the Life domain. If your chosen deity has the death domain, your only option is to be a Life Cleric. Deities: Clerics, and characters with the Acolyte background must choose a deity from the list of non-human deities, or those from the Forgotten realms list (both in the Appendix in the PHB).  Gear: If you choose starting money, you start with maximum gp (eg. 5d4x10 =200gp).  ​3.  If I am playing lower level, do I get more gold for the adventure (as in Pathfinder Society), or am I just getting a split of what everyone else gets? No, you get the same share of treasure as everyone else. You begin with starting gear only, regardless of what level the party is at.  Exception: Some certificates allow you to break these rules, such as alignment, domain choices, or starting gear. If you have such a certificate, you may use it for your character if it is available to a starting character..... To date, the only certificate of this kind that I know if is the one granted to DMs, which grants them additional starting gear (either money, breastplate armor, or one of a handful of minor magic items).
#4 Coredump00 Nov 17, 2014 7:32:21	One caveat.   If you are 4th level, and the rest of the group is heading into Teir 2 play (lvl 5-10), you may "Catch Up" by spending some downtime days and gold, and that character will become lvl 5 also.   Of course, IIRC, they put this cool feature in, but don't provide enough Downtime days  in the Encounter missions to actually *use* it... but your DM may not mind.

#10 CoreyartustheSecond Nov 29, 2014 22:09:09	Not to highjack this thread, but I have a basic question.   Horde of the Dragon Queen sanctioned Encounters is Episodes 1-3.   Episode 4 is not, technically, Encounters play.  Even though it's level 4 (Tier 1).   Is that correct?
#11 AlHazred Dec 01, 2014 5:25:36	Episode 4 is no longer D&D Encounters, but it is still legal for Adventurers' League play. In fact, my store has received certs for items in the entire module, so if your store keeps playing (like mine). you can still accumulate experience, downtime days, and items for your character. The organizer should schedule it as "D&D Casual Play" in the Wizards Event Reporter, instead of "D&D Encounters".
