Wizards, Spellbooks and Story Origin

As Skerrit has stated previously, Tyranny of Dragons characters (wizards mostly) will be able to copy spells from spellbooks found in the EE storyarc, even if those spells happen to be ones found in Princes of the Apocalypse or the online EE supplement.

I applaud this approach, however it does raise a handful of valid issues which we should probably resolve before the start of season.

All of the following questions pertain to wizards (predominantly), Tome Pact Warlocks, and characters with the Ritual Caster feat.

  • Will said wizards be allowed to copy spells from friendly EE wizard spellbooks (eg. an EE PC)?
  • If so, how will ToD wizards be able to prove this spell was acquired legitimately?

Some players may "cheat" and simply cross off the GP on their adventurer's log, and state they "copied the spell from another PCs spellbook", even if no such PC existed.

  • Should we instead prohibit copying spells from PC spellbooks from a different Story Origin?

This would resolve the issue upfront, but may cause minor resentment. Especially given the fact that the PC can still copy spells from a captured spellbook.

  • Should we expect wizards to provide evidence of any captured spellbook they copied spells from?

Should we expect the PCs to provide proof that they participated in DDXX and keep accurate logs of which specific spellbook they are copying spells from, in their notes section?

I have noticed a tendency among players to "forget" to record the name of the adventure module or episode on their adventure log, let alone keep accurate records in the note section in respect to GP expenditure.

If you're worried about it, write your own certificate and date & sign it. Then you legitimize when your players acquire spells from alt sources.

Personally, I don't care myself. So long as I don't have to go hunting for the text of the spell.

I think you are getting ahead of yourself, simply because you are asking about the effects off of rules that are not yet released, much finished being written. Also, my actual quote was something more along the lines of you might be able to get things from adventures and then I listed wizard's spellbooks found as an adventure as an example (as opposed to another player's spellbook). I did not intend to imply that it was garuenteed, or that wizards would be the only ones ever who could get a new rules item from a different story origin than their own. As for evidence/proof, it would like remain the same as any other proof, you write it on your logsheet. We are not in the business of policing beyond what a DM notices.

Also, if a player says that his character has something (a magic item, a captured spellbook), but it isn't a usual thing and the player doesn't have an entry in his character log showing how he acquired that thing, the DM is authorized to disallow that thing. (ALPG, p.10)
