Hopefully it will include ways of making sure you get flanking without accidentally make AoE's hard on the controllers.

To pull that off all you do is press triangle+circle at the moment that the AoE is going off. You have to be careful with your timing though or else you'll take double damage instead.:P

It's 300 pages of Copy Paste from CharOp threads. It explains how to make characters that can never die by level 16, and how to make a ranger do 1000 DPR by level 8 using weapon synergy and bad syntax in a feat description.

If only. Judging from their past advice on character building, this book will most certainly not be for anyone who is actually interested in CharOp.

my guess it will have guides on how to unlock characters such as Elminster, Drizzit, etc. and have them join your party as PCs. :P

It does sound like an amazingly dumb book. I'll give it a look through, but I don't see myself buying it.

I personally think it would be more interesting if it were more of a fluff book; giving ideas on how to create a unique, memorable character, reflavor your race/class, etc. I doubt that will ever happen, though... :crying:

the irony being by trying to keep both of you happy (maybe not you per say but the POV you bring tot he thread) is why the 'help' falls short to both....

I'm happy when they release a stinker like this once in awhile, because ive been spending way too much on books this edition. A fluff book would save my wallet for a month as well.

Does anyone doubt that this guy is a troll?

2010 will suck? The release of Dark Sun alone will make it an awesome year. And there is nothing wrong with this book.

hehehe... thanks!

Man... think of it: since when players need strategy guides????? they are they own strategy guides, always trying to "best" the encounters. This is like putting vodka in the middle of the beer contest, someone is going to purge later, heheeheh

for dark sun... it's really great for DS fans (and no-fans as well... rich baker's have all the skills needed to make a great setting, and I really wish that all DS fans enjoy the 3 books being released next year), but I'm alredy with a campaing in forgotten realms. There's no need for more campaing settings for me. So, seeing it by this perspective, 2010, for me, will be spended much more in miniatures :D

You've obviously never seen some of the tactical ineptitude I have. I have witnessed a player, playing a rogue, not flank for entire battles until I (as the DM) finally told him, 'you know, if you shift one square to the left and you can deal your sneak attack damage'. He was also using basic attacks instead of at-wills ...

It's easy for veteran players to say it's a waste of time, but that's not who it's aimed at. My kids are learning how to play 4E, but that's because I am taking the time to teach them. How many younger players don't have someone to help them? Or older players for that matter, I just met someone my age who was confused as to why you add numbers to your roll instead of subtracting them to get your Thac0. He hadn't played since 2E and wanted to teach his son, so they are both learning 4E together, a book like this would prove very useful, if they are going to approach it the way I think they are: showing the connections between the roles and how to make the most of your character/party.

I have a suggestion for a subtitle for the Player's Guide.

The D&D Players Guide: Yes, There Are New Players. No, They Don't Know How to Play D&D.

Whatay'all think? ;)

Actually, judging from the Fighter Essentials article from Dragon, I think that this will actually provide some helpful advice to players. Not exactly to the CharOp board, but to the rest of the players - those who go to the CharOppers for aid.

I'm glad this is being released - it sounds like a decent read, even though I consider my self optimization-proficient. If anything, it'll make life easier on the CharOppers, because they (we) will have a few less threads about "How do I make my fighter work?"

Open your minds, people - a product that's being released to provide basic optimization advice is a GOOD thing, even if you don't personally need it.
