oh man no kind of list of new minis i'm pretty sure there be some kind of miniatures for rpg coming out in 2012

My guess is that it takes a long time to make a set of miniatures, so if a set of D&D minis were to come out it would be sometime late in 2012.

Amazon listings appeared for those, starting mid-2012:

Dungeon Command: Heroes: A Dungeons & Dragons Expansion Pack (D&D Miniatures Product) - July

Dungeon Command: Drow: A Dungeons & Dragons Expansion Pack (D&D Miniatures Product) - July

Dungeon Command: Goblins: A Dungeons & Dragons Expansion Pack (D&D Miniatures Product) - August

Wonder how many minis will there be in each expansion.

The minis are also part of the new skirmish game (apparently called Dungeon Command), announced at GenCon.

A whole expansion pack full of ONLY goblins? That would be VERY interesting!

Following the hints from GenCon, the next expansion should be elves, followed by orcs.

This conjecture has absolutely no basis in reality and is a product of pure fancy.  I'm hoping the lack of content comeing out this year means they are working on 5th edition and have been for quite sometime and all of the last year or two of 4th edition has been an attempt to work out kinks, generate some interim revenue, and smoke screen us (so we keep buying 4th ed stuff to keep interim revenue up) so that when they  come out with 5th ed in 2013 they will have a product being the perfect merger of 3rd and 4th editions as well as online tools inplace and working and all the goodies that they promised us years ago at the launch of 4th edition. a 3d table top program and character generator.

on a side note what i've see of neverwinter's forge program, i'd say they are damned close to what they promised ages ago.

I have been searching on Amazon for both 'Paul S Kemp' as well as for 'Godborn' (which is supposed to be the first book in the much anticipated Cycle of Night trilogy which might provide clues as to the ultimate fate of Mask and Erevis Cale).

So far, I have found nothing but offers for previously published works by Kemp.

Since 'Godborn' was supposed to come out in the first half of 2012, I (fool that I am) had assumed that there would be notice by now for advance orders but so for nothing.

Has 'Cycle of Night' been pulled back into the shop for re-tooling, re-editing?   Cry

I really like Kemp's work, I like the intricate plots and maniacal schemes that his characters employ and I am simply wondering, will the 'Cycle of Night' ever debut?

Well, it will be interesting to see what the-powers-that-be at Wizards permit the prospective playtesters to see as Fifth Edition is developed.

Yes, I have signed up as a potential playtester and yes, I know that I will be required not to spill any of the beans (Java or otherwise) before the official publication date (or until one of the archmages at Wizards decides to reveal things).

I had merely hoped to be able to purchase all of the official Fourth Edition Players' Handbooks and Players' Options before Fifth Edition arrived.

It most likely wont come before August 2013; that, and the probable availability of cheap second hand volumes in ebay and the likes of, makes that objective somewhat easy to achieve.

Quite so. Shoot (and Woot!), just Monday, I purchased on eBay an AD&D Unearthed Arcana in "Very Fine" condition for 35 bucks - less than the retail of several of the current 4e volumes, so getting them shouldn't be an issue.

Frown   And, yet the presumption had been that the Wizards of the Coast would be making its profits off the subscribing players rather than upon endlessly churning out one rules edition after another.    I had been very willing to buy first printings of the Players' Handbooks, the Players' Options books, the Monster Manuals, Dungeon Masters' Guides and so on, if that would mean that Wizards would keep the new editions limited to a new set only every eight to ten years.

Heck, the binding on my much updated 4th edition PHB1 has not yet begun to fall apart.

MINIATURES

Dungeon Command: Heroes: A Dungeons & Dragons Expansion Pack (D&D Miniatures Product) - July

Dungeon Command: Drow: A Dungeons & Dragons Expansion Pack (D&D Miniatures Product) - July

These two have been added to the Wizards Product listing, with better descriptions and some indications of what minis are within:

Dungeon Command: Heart of Cormyr

Dungeon Command: Sting of Lolth

Also glad that there are rules to play with a single box.

Regarding the official description of the two Dungeon Command, I find it strange that there's no mention of whether the minis are pre-painted or not, when they previously seemed to indicate that they would be.  Maybe they just forgot?
#66

Alter_Boy

Jan 14, 2012 11:46:25
WotC hasn't released unpainted miniatures since the Chainmail line in the 2000s. It's usually assumed that WotC will make their minis prepainted.

HOWEVER, this product is meant to be compatable with the Adventure System boardgames, whose miniatures are mono-coloured. So I think your hunch might be well-founded.
#67

Fallen_Star_02

Jan 14, 2012 21:09:55
The adventure system board games are $70 and contain 42 unpainted minis. That's $1.66 per mini, without counting all the cards tokens and tiles. The dungeon command sets are $40 for 12 minis, or over $3.33 per mini. That's closer to the price per mini of Lords of Madness and Savage Encounters. So I think it's fair to assume these will be prepainted.

There are only two unanswered questions. Do these contain all new sculpts, partially new, or all repaints? And, are these meant to be evergreen products or limited run?

I'm hoping for a Monster Vault or two before they release the 1/2/3/4+5th edition.

Only in the strict sense of a standalone Adventure System box, you mean.

For generic boxed games, there is Lords of Waterdeep (which im actually more interested in than another Adventure System box set), and for further support, there are the new Dungeon Command sets.

So, it seems that WotC is serious about continuing the e-book business, so I made a distinct heading for books only available on Kindle. I like Alex Irvine's work, so I might jump on with "Demon Weave".

Now for the 1st ed reprints. I've never had to mix player books and DM books from 2 different editions in the same listing. How do you people think I should do it? Make a listing for Reprints? Sort them according to who uses them and mark in bold which edition it's for? Something tells me this won't be the last we see of reprints...

Supposedly the Fourth Edition on-line tools will remain available for us even after the Fifth Edition arrives. However the Fifth Edition will nto even arrive until at least August 2013 (Gencon) or possibly even January 2014 (40th anniversary), so that leaves at least 19 months of 4th edition all alone.

It really sucks that D&D Next is going to suck up a lot of their resources- less work on 4E.

Not happy that there isn't a Monster Vault coming out. I'm glad I didn't buy the Legend of Drizzt board game since they don't appear to be releasing a new game of this type anytime soon.

The next D&D lair assault is not coming out until the summer? That sucks.

No Feywild equivalent to Gloomwraught- ugh.

Oh well. Not the first time Wizards has dissapointed me, will not be the last time either.

I'm expecting four to five miniature releases (the dungeon command stuff) and then they will axe that.

DDI looks like it will carry the 4E flag for at least 2012- that is good news. The Dungeoneer's Survival Guide looks cool and I guess Heroes of Elemental Chaos does too. Stoopid D&D next!

A little note to Peter Lee or whomever is working on these- I hope you did not reuse the Acheron Goblin sculpt from Blood War. I have around 425+ minis, and those goblins are the only ones that have broken. About three of them have lost their axe blade, right where it connects to the handle. The sculpt is obviously weak at that spot.

Just wanted to help you avoid a customer relations nightmare.

Yep. Smacks of the slightly lazy publishing style we got at the end of 3.5E where you package someone's material as a book and sell it (ie. Grand History).

The Rose of Sarifal

There may be a problem with getting a paperback copy of 'The Rose of Sarifal'.   Amazon several hours ago informed me that my advance order for a mass market paperback copy of this book had been cancelled (by Amazon) because Amazon could not guarantee receiving copies of that book.

There is still a chance for the Kindle version, but i do not want the Kindle version or the Nook version:   I want the paperback version!

There appears to be some kind of double entry in the Amazon database; if you notice the link above, there are two entries for a mass market paperback, one the link refers to and this one , which has a different ISBN.

They may just be fixing the screw up, but a better explanation should be given to who pre-ordered the item.

I saw those two entries for the 'mass market paperback'.   Unfortunately, when you click on one of those entries, you get the message 'that nothing can be ordered......' and when you click on the other entry, you are left with no option to order anything.    Frown

Okay.

I have re-entered my order for the mass market paperback version of 'Rose of Sarifal' at Amazon and I will wait and see if I get it or not.Undecided

And, then, I will resume my search for Paul S Kemp and the initial book of 'The Cycle of Night' trilogy.

I am still of the opinion that Kemp intends to assassinate the Realms deity Shar, at the very least, in order to restore the deity Mask, and possibly Erevis Cale.

I am also of the opinion that the Wizards R&D office ordered either a massive rewrite of the trilogy or else a massive rescheduling of the release of the trilogy, until the R&D office deems it wise to permit the elimination of Shar to take place.

I still can not shake the hunch that Greenwood intends to resurrect the deity Mystra as a primal spirit.

Back in 2009, Kemp had ended a trilogy of books just as the Spell Plague had descended upon the Realms with the deity Mask being consumed by Shar, but with Mask's last conscious thought being of a possible triumphant return.

Ever since then, there have been tantalizing hints that Kemp was planning to bring Mask, and possibly Erevis Cale, back in a rather stupendous fashion.   Ever since then, there have also been equally agonizing signs that the Wizards R&D office thought that Kemp's efforts to resurrect the deity of rogues and intrigue would quite likely involve another jumbling of the Realms cosmology such as happened after Mystra's demise.   Thus, for those of us who have an affection for the deity of rogues, it has been an agonizing wait while Kemp and the Wizards R&D office wrangled over whose ultimate vew of the cosmology and divine pecking order of the Realms, would prevail.   Unfortunately, much of this debate happened behind closed doors and thus, I can only infer what might have happened by the little hints that leak out.

At the beginning of 2012, there had been a small notice that the 'Cycle of Night' trilogy might begin to see the light of day sometime this year.   However, the maddeningly fiendishness of it all, is that while Greenwood has announced when the next chapter in his epic Elminster saga will appear, both Kemp and the Wizards R&D office are keepng very quiet as to the date when the 'Cycle of Night' might appear.   If all of this 'cloak and dagger' stuff is simply a marketing ploy to spike potential sales, then it is indeed working.   [Since anything that involves cloaks, daggers, intrigue and stealth, is very much in keeping with the essence of who and what Mask is, there this entire process has surely been 'blessed' by Mask!]

And so, back into the shadows I go, to wait for another all too brief sign that the 'Cycle of Night' might finally begin.

Well, Amazon.co.uk has the release date for Nov 20th (although Amazon.co.uk does sometimes jump the gun - the title was cancelled).

Well, Amazon.co.uk, chooses to spell Kemp's name as 'PaulS Kemp' instead of as 'Paul S Kemp' as the Seattle, WA based Amazom.com chooses to spell Kemp's name.

I had seen that entry some time ago but I had thought to be somewhat curious that searching for 'PaulS Kemp' at Amazom.com produced nothing.

Perhaps, 'Cycle of Night' has been returned to another cycle of revision, in which case, it may be 2013 or 2014 before Shar receives what it coming to her.

Well, with 5ed being announced, it feels like the Realms are going to undergo another metamorphosis. Drow invading the surface, Mystara (possibly returning), Salvatore needing more people to fight Driz'zt. ;) It seems that they are committed to bringing back Cale, but they haven't finalized how exactly he fits into the new world order. (I'm starting to read the trilogy tomorrow!)

Updated for Undermountain release.

I suspect that Salvatore may actually be slowly drawing the saga of Drizzt Do'Urden to a close.   As Heinlein and Asimov both hit their 60's, they began to bring the lives of their various fictional characters to a close.   As measured by the various time scales of the novels, and the 4th Edition Forgotten Realms Campaign Guide, the character of Drizzt is definitely well over 100 years old and I suspect the character is definitely middle-aged, even for an elf.

Well, the vendor supplied home page for Paul S Kemp at Amazon.com is just as mysterious with regards to when the 'Cycle of Night' will begin to appear.   Kemp said that 'Godborn' would appear sometime in 2012 but neither Amzon.com nr the Wizards of the Coast product catalog has any listing for it.

Also, 'Brimstone Angels:  Lesser Evil(s)' is being advance sold by Amazon.com as both an e-book as well as a mass market paperback.   This book should be available in December 2012.

Depends on the edition, most of the time Elves can live for well into their 700's, most often longer.

Drizzt ran away from home and started his adventure well before he was even an adult by Elven/Drow stanards, which is at least 100 years old.

Drizzt isn't really close to death, most especially if 5E returnes to old school life-spans.

However, Drizzt has been a living character since the 80's, I would not be surprised if Salvatore gives us a definitive - and hopefully heroic - end to the character's wondrous life.

Even in 4e, drow are stated to live much longer than other sorts of elves as long as nobody kills them. "Exceptional members of the race measure their ages in centuries."

Yeah, 4E really tapired back the ages in an effort to make them more realistc. I mean some elves in 1E could live to 1,600 years old.

Some 'elves' in 4e are functionally immortal. The Prince of Frost and the Summer Queen, for example. OK, they're immortal because they've become archfey, but they were born eladrin (i.e. the 'high elves'/'grey elves' of previous editions), and becoming an archfey seems to be a natural consequence of an eldarin just being powerful and long-lived enough, rather than any sort of outside agency (i.e. it's not analogous to becoming a lich/baelnorn). So 4e isn't completely incompatible with the sorts of lifespans given in earlier editions. The main change has been to get rid of the (frankly ridiculous) multi-decade childhoods that made it seem like elves all had serious learning disorders.

But my point was just that, no matter the edition, Drizzt is still pretty young for a drow. We're not going to get rid of him that easily. ;)

ETA: I remember reading somewhere that, unless you were much, much physically tougher than a human (i.e. being able to regenerate lost limbs, flawlessly mend broken bones, perfect immune system, etc.), you could not expect to live much beyond three centuries even if you didn't have to worry about old age, because statistically you're almost guaranteed to have had a fatal accident by then.

In our homebrew, we decided to go with a Tolkienesque approach. The elves and eladrin, and similar races such as drow, hamadryads, dryads, and nymphs are effectively immortal. Only after many thousands of years do they begin to fade and become incorporated into nature. A hamadryad or a nymph becomes a tree, an eladrin might become a stream or a breeze in the woods, and so on.

We also made dragonborn and dwarves very long lived--up to 2000 years.

Dragons live for 10000 to 25000 years.

Of course, to accommodate this, the history of the rise and fall of empires stretches back a million or more years to the time of the great war between the gods and the primordials.

Because of the influence of the evil gods, the primordials, the demons and devils and so on, progress to modern civilization never occurs. Empires are destroyed and all their progress is lost and the world is returned to the dark ages and progress has to start all over again in a never ending cycle.

How likely is a DM 3 book? I'm in Paragon, and I am trying to play the final arc that takes us into Epic. A DM guide for Epic campaigns would be very helpful!

I'm still really hoping for a Dungeon Master's Guide 3. I know that there is quite a bit of Epic Tier information scattered through various books, but there is no one book that really brings it all together for the DM.

Dungeon Master's Guide 3 would be great to help create outstanding Epic Tier campaigns.

I would love in-depth information about the Epic Level Monsters and the world in which they exist. How do my characters get involved in the battles of the gods and primordials? How do they fight a god? How do they become a god? What are their motivations? What are the impacts of their actions? How do they travel the worlds? How do others perceive them? Where do they live? Is there an equivalent of Sigil for the Epic Tier?

I would love to see some example Epic Tier campaigns at low, middle, and high Epic level. I would love to know how to help the characters fulfill their Epic Destinies.

PLEASE, before you write-off 4e and launch 5e, PLEASE give us this last DM guide!!
