Is there any info on upcoming 4E video games? Why would a system for a game that uses dice transfer well to a video game? I could understand the desire for a similarly themed game but what does the system matter? Everything would have to be redone in the switch between mediums, anyway. That said, Diablo 3 is looking really good. |
| #3doneisiApr 05, 2009 16:31:00 | It is kind of early for a game, 4e is not even a year old yet. 4e rules only really lend themselves to a turn based strategy game due to the power system and push/pulls; unlike the other editions which did real time okay. |
| #4NimlohApr 05, 2009 16:37:26 | Does anyone remember the game from the early 90s called Betrayal at Krondor? It had a turn-based combat system with a battle grid that was fairly innovative at the time. I think developers could make a sophisticated modern version of a turn-based game like Krondor that would be fantastic. D&D is tailor made for that style of game. I would love to control a group of 5 characters and plan out the tactics for a combat encounter. It would be like playing D&D! Perhaps the game could also allow for friends to play together through the campaign such that others would control some of the PCs. I would love this since it would offer a break from FPS, action RPGs, and MMOs--all of which I love, but would like an alternative. |
| #5diabolical_harmonyApr 05, 2009 16:40:35 | I quite enjoy tactical turn based computer games myself so that sort of thing in a 4E D&D game would be welcomed by me at least :D. Preferably one where you get to create your own party ala the golden box games of 2nd ED and then pit them in ever more interesting encounters in a tactics kind of game inside a larger story arc. *Dreams happily about such a game*![]() *Edit* I'm right there with ya Nimloh! I recently re played Betrayal at Krondor and it is a great game if somewhat dated as you would expect .Also games such as Shining Force even though it is a JRPG from the Sega had a similar if somewhat larger scope (with less options for useful tactics) have shown that this type of game can be very effective and enjoyable in a single player environment. I have no idea how it would work multi other than hotseat'esque play style or straight head to head PVP. *scratches head* |
| #6the-secondApr 05, 2009 16:43:43 | You mean when will a game system many people think is based on a video game have a video game based on it? If they make it non turn based it will be similar to lots of successful games. If they make it turn based it will be similar to less (and less successful) games. It will be made into a game the next time WotC and a game producer decide they have a good way to leverage a WotC controlled intellectual property to make a successful game. Only after that will they decide if and how they want to use D&D rules in a video game format. |

My guess is 3 years from now on for a big PC game and 1-1/2 year for a handheld game (if one is in the works. Depends on how successful D&D Tactics was) Also, depending on the contract Atari has with WotC you might not see an 4E game at all as 4E doesn't lend itself very well to semi real time combat and turn based combat on a big platform doesn't sell well. Atari might decide to stick with 3E for the time and just import the new classes and races. It also looks like Obsidian currently has its hands full with other projects and is not currently working on a new D&D game besides an NWN 2 expansion. Considering that 4E likely requires a complete new engine expect to wait a long time for it. |

I would love to see a turn based RPG based on 4th edition. A good, gold-box style one with the length of a Star Ocean title would be a nice start. |
| #9Xaielao2Apr 05, 2009 17:17:25 | We know the license to make a 4e video game has been sold, though I don't know who holds it. /dreaming of a Baldur's Gate or NWN style 4e game. I wouldn't doubt if NWN 3 (using 4e) is in the works. :D Oh and to the guy who said what has a game based on dice have to do with a video game? That made me laugh, even basic programming has far more then you realize apparently. In fact a random/algorithmic game works best. It's when you start including arbitrary (and truly random) systems into video games when things start getting messed up. I mean, 4e D&D is a turn based, strategically minded game based on random averages after all. It's perfect for a video game. *just make sure it's a PC game, not some crappy console, linear, sales bin wannabe. |

| #11mshea_dupApr 05, 2009 19:09:33 | I'd love to see a turn-based game like the old AD&D gold box games from the 80s. I'd also love to see a 4e version of Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance which I liked a lot. |
| #12doomboy_dupApr 05, 2009 20:35:55 | At the risk of generating random attacks, I can see the complaints now :"this video game is just like 4E edition!" ![]() FWIW, I think this license product would make a great game, it really seems like the rules set would translate very smoothly...as long as they don't screw it up and make it 'real time'. |
| #13crimson_lancerApr 05, 2009 20:42:20 | At the risk of generating random attacks, I can see the complaints now :"this video game is just like 4E edition!" Awesome!!FWIW, I think this license product would make a great game, it really seems like the rules set would translate very smoothly...as long as they don't screw it up and make it 'real time'. I have to agree here. NWN was its own thing, but 4E would survive the transition about as well as FF12 did. :S |
| #14ashrem_bayle_02Apr 06, 2009 10:02:03 | I want to see a game that is somewhat similar to a hybrid between Neverwinter Nights and Oblivion. It'd be real time until you made contact with the enemy. At that point, combat would pause and the camera would pan out and up to show you the battlefield, where upon a grid would appear and it would become a tactical turn based game. Critical hits would be punctuated by a Fallout 3 styled slow-motion cinematic camera. :D |
