Is it just me, or is it likely this is a PHB3 race? Assuming it is a race in the PHB3 what could it be?
I'm thinking Illumians, although in 3.5e they just look like humans with floating sigils, this could be a reinterpretation. Floating bands of light is fairly similar to floating sigils, and this does look human (although of an asian appearance rather than the usual caucasian depiction of D&D humans).

One problem with psionics is that they've never been terribly visually flashy. I feel for the artist. |

As much as I'd love to see the return of Illumians, I must agree GregT that it's just an artistic representation of the psion's powers. The Article with the author commentaries has two additional portraits, one looks like it might be an eladrin and the other is definitely a teifling, both of them have the same glowing rings (in fact the teifling has three interlaced rings, in two different colors, plus a glowing sphere floating directly over his head). |

and very pointed ears. do kalashtar have pointed ears (I don't remember) |
| #7williamhm75Jul 08, 2009 8:17:48 | Well Id love to see a truly unique race for 4e. but yeah im with the others that looks like a human using a psychic power. |
| #8doctorhookJul 08, 2009 8:54:34 | Yes, I also think it's a human. A very ugly human. |
| #9HaldrikJul 08, 2009 9:10:24 | The human in the picture is seems to portray (South-?) East-Asian flavor, tho the artist may not be familiar with drawing this aesthetic.
To me, the picture is ok - D&D illustrations are almost never sexy.
... except it annoys me when the warriors are always male and the mages are always female. *roll eyes*. Enough with the gender discrimination, already! |
| #10sepsisJul 08, 2009 10:59:27 | The girl in the picture has a very "asian" look about her, and I had recently noticed that many Half-Elf pics show them with a kinda "asian" look. So I would say she is either an Human or a Half-Elf. |
| #11nightwalker450Jul 08, 2009 11:02:17 | Actually in the commentary of the article they talked about adding a new implement, "Circlets", but they decided to scrap the idea.
I'm betting that circlets were still on the drawing board when the artwork was commissioned.
So Fugly human with implement that will never be. |
| #12GrazelJul 08, 2009 11:34:33 | I'm going with human with constipation. I suspect she was supposed to look like she was focusing her mental powers but that's not really the way the look comes off to me.
The rings are either a representation of the psionic powers or the scrapped circlet implement. Personally I would have liked the circlet implement, I think it could stand apart as a psionic power source implement in the way that totems are primal. Sure an orb can be shaped like a crystal but you can't make a staff or orb into a circlet worn on the head since both have to be held to be used as implements. Hopefully we'll at least see psionic power source useful circlet magic items for the head slot. Having orbs and staffs as implements will make the psion and arcane classes 'bleed together' in the gameworld with common people probably not able to tell them apart. This will likely affect the other psionic classes as well other than the monk. |
