| #1jiguroJun 30, 2008 23:47:26 | First of all, I'm not sure if this is the right forum to post this. If not, administrators feel free to move it to where it better fits. And now my post... I just knew that Blizzard has announced Diablo III and visiting the new web page for the game I thought that it would be great to be able to play D&D in Sanctuary (Diablo's world). Wizards could do what the did with Diablo II (but in a much better way, I hope) and make the world of Diablo one of the new Campaign Settings to be released in the future. That would put me in ecstasy! In my own opinion 4th edition is a good fit for the gameplay style of Diablo. What do you think? Would you like to see Sanctuary released as a Campaign Setting? |
| #2enigmashockJul 01, 2008 9:59:07 | I think it would be great, however, I would see this as probably never happening. WotC and Blizzard are two titans at gaming. Blizzard would (probably) never invest time or resources to produce an RPG pen-n-paper campaign setting for someone else's game system. Blizzard properties are designed to generate income for Blizzard. Same goes for WotC. Also, I think Blizzard would lack real ability to produce for full-format printing, and thus would need to bring in a 3p sub to put it together - additional costs. While I don't think it would be impossible (as if there is enough potential money to be made, ANYTHING's possible), I would just see it as extremely unlikely. That being said, I know there are many at Blizzard who are active D&Ders and probably many at WotC that play Diablo, WoW, Warcraft and/or Starcraft - I am sure they would have no shortage of talent lining up to do it. |
| #3That_Blasted_SomoflangeJul 01, 2008 10:09:24 | Actually, Blizzard did such a thing with Diablo 2 already. It was on the crossover from 2e to 3e I believe. Also, there is a d20 Warcraft setting out there, I'm not sure if it's still in production, but it is out there. Now, I'm not trying to be picky, while I absolutely LOVE the settings for the three big Blizzard titles (Starcraft, Warcraft, Diablo) I don't necessarily thing that d20/4e is the best system to represent them. I'm not saying that it couldn't be done, just that there may be other systems that could capture the feel of the game. That being said, I would love to see Blizzard do a book that has all the details/history of the world and that you can adapt it to ANY system. |
| #4nymrohdJul 01, 2008 11:10:05 | The Warcraft PnP RPG did decently and I would expect a Diablo one to manage well enough as well. Tbh though, 4E is so modular and versatile I think a dedicated fan or two can manage this quite well. |
| #5narukagamiJul 01, 2008 11:20:30 | The Warcraft PnP RPG did decently and I would expect a Diablo one to manage well enough as well. It didn't. There WAS a Diablo d20 game on the market a while ago, it didn't fare so well. Tbh though, 4E is so modular and versatile I think a dedicated fan or two can manage this quite well. Indeed. I don't see how you couldn't do Diablo as a D&D campaign setting. You don't even really have to make the mechanics work the way they do in the game, just make the fluff and stylistic feel of the games work. |
| #6nymrohdJul 01, 2008 11:39:37 | The Diablo setting was published at the worst possible moment right between an edition transition and with no prospect of support. And the fact that the warcraft PnP was at the end discontinued does not change the fact that it managed to produce several supplements and two editions. Overall it was a relative success for the effort invested. If WotC had published it it would have done a lot better simply because of brand recognition. |
| #7Kensan_OniJul 01, 2008 11:52:10 | Considering that S&S is in agreement with Blizzard to produce items (Such as the WOW RPG), you might see one, but it won't be from WOTC. Still, it could be cool. |
| #8igotsmeakabobJul 01, 2008 15:12:20 | Anything to play a Tyrael-ish renegade angel, hah. |
| #9garkhainJul 02, 2008 18:28:59 | In few words, hell pls no. Diablo is a simple game where u kill anything that moves. An RPG is a game of roles, not only bloodshed (well, maybe sometimes is funny, but not always). I like play diablo, but cause i have to shut down my brain and click. D&D make ur brain more "sensitive", instead. Let it remain a pc game. |
| #10igotsmeakabobJul 02, 2008 22:21:53 | ... Are you serious? There's a whole Sanctuary setting. There are novels. Diablo is more than just click-killing, its an actual setting. |
| #11tehsquirrelyJul 03, 2008 16:04:33 | Other than fluff it would be fairly easy to set a campaign in the world of sanctuary. You just need to change around monster names and appearances. For example take Orcus and change him into one of The Three (probably mephisto or Baal). Take kobolds, goblins, gnome other small mooky type creatures and change them into Fallen, Carvers, Devilkin etc. Take Orcs, Hobgoblins, bugbears, and things like that and change them into the goatmen clans (forget what they're called, like Blood Clan, Moon Clan, etc). And on in that fashion. Hell you could scrape up a Fallen shaman really easily, just take a kobold or goblin leader type and add an ability Raise Fallen, as a standard action at-will ressurect a dead Fallen Minion. Just for example. It's really more of an asthetic change than anything and blizzard (and its rabid fans) do a good job already providing infomation on the world and its history, just type in Diablo Wiki in google, you're sure to find something. Also my friend just brought something like this up to me the other day, weird, haha. |
| #12pigknightJul 05, 2008 1:11:32 | If it's any consolation to you guys I made a Diablo II Barbarian class. Also Sanctuary would be a pretty cool setting, it's probably gonna abuse minions. |
| #13raxxmanJul 07, 2008 8:26:11 | I think the Diablo games make for a great setting for a POL campaign. a large well established beastery of monsters, a good solid but not over fleshed out backstory, leaving room for creativity but giving a good guide. |
| #14antiochJul 07, 2008 10:07:33 | I dont see a 4th Edition Diablo game coming out, but it probably wouldnt be hard to pull of. Just take the map of Sanctuary from their site and have at it. I dont know if I will do that, myself, but I'm more than happy to take concepts of characters, monsters, locations, and items for my own games. |
| #15moeJul 09, 2008 16:21:40 | Yay ... endless Mephisto runs ftw? |
| #16xhereticxJul 10, 2008 11:00:59 | ... Yeah, and Richard Knaak did a pretty good job of bringing the world alive through those novels as well, as he did with Warcraft. I would like to see a gothic, hell-based setting in D&D, though maybe not necessarily Diablo. Something that does with demons as Ravenloft does with undead. |
| #17RavenspyreJul 10, 2008 14:34:26 | Yeah, and Richard Knaak did a pretty good job of bringing the world alive through those novels as well, as he did with Warcraft. Ravenloft actually doesn't deal all that much with undead. Just the prominant figure, Strahd, is typically seen. A good potion of Ravenloft's darklords are actually very much living. |

I know Ravenloft is filled with individuals of great evil that were sent to the Demiplane to be tortured with memories of their past, but I thought they were turned into undead or something like that. Whatever, I must be mixing Ravenloft up with Ghostwalk. |

Whatever, I must be mixing Ravenloft up with Ghostwalk. You're probably thinking of the Grim Harvest for Ravenloft, where a good portion of the residents in Darkon got turned into undead. ----- Anyways, the ruleset wasn't quite ready to mesh with Diablo II back with 2E/3E. I could definately see a 4E version of Diablo II, and depending on how Diablo III turns out, it would probably fit with 4E mechanics. And I think the Diablo franchise with the D&D logo on it would do a lot to boost 4E sales and perhaps draw more folks into the hobby. |
| #20RavenspyreJul 12, 2008 0:30:02 | You're probably thinking of the Grim Harvest for Ravenloft, where a good portion of the residents in Darkon got turned into undead. It could, and the rules definitely support it a lot better. Especially since there is now essentially equipment slotting. |
| #21ahhhhchooooJul 12, 2008 9:36:11 | you could always just make your own campaign setting |
| #22silversparJul 14, 2008 22:16:53 | That would probably be easier, and since Blizzard posted a map on the D3 site probably be exceptionally easier now. Just need to know a little bit about Diablo and you are set. |
| #23bodyknockJul 18, 2008 21:44:11 | I actually kind of liked the d20 Diablo module. It was a fun hack and slash, and sometimes I'm in the mood to just beat stuff up and not worry about the story. In fact I've been having a little fun now and then playing some "D&D solitaire" using the random dungeon and encounter generators in the DMG. I made myself four quick characters and run them through a string of encounters in a randomized dungeon until either they get killed or I run out of time or get bored. Certainly I'm not playing it as often as I play other stuff, but hey, it's kind of a neat diversion and it gives me a chance to play around with tactics and items and powers and things. Personally I think it would be cool to see one or both of the following: - Since the DMG made a point to emphasize that playing DnD without a DM is quite possible, I'd love to see a module or supplement that actually is geared toward DM-less play. Basically a module that is a more sophisticated, complete version of the random dungeon and encounter generators, as well as random traps and hazards and an algorithmic pseudo-random system for picking magic items and treasure. It would essentially be a 50 or 70 page expansion of the very basic random system in the DMG. Throw in some blank battlemaps and you've got a fun little boardgame you can play when you're not ready or in the mood to run a full blown adventure, or if you're a nut like me who likes to play solitaire now and then. I think such a module might fill a niche that normal adventures don't.- On the flip side, I'd also be interested in a tactical, randomized dungeon crawl video game using 4th edition rules. Basically a cross between Diablo and Final Fantasy Tactics, where the combat is played out tactically on battlemaps similar to 4th edition but the adventures are randomized dungeon crawls with encounters and traps and items scaled to your party's level. I'd love to have a game like that for my Nintendo DS to play at lunch. I know there's a 3rd edition DnD game of some sort for the PSP, but I don't know anything about it other than that it exists. So yeah, I love running and playing in sophisticated adventures and campaigns. But I also like DnD hack and slash now and then, and the module and game I mentioned above would fit that side hobby really well. |

| #25ranger_regJul 21, 2008 2:26:12 | What do you think? Would you like to see Sanctuary released as a Campaign Setting? Would I like to see a Diablo III Campaign Setting Book released? Yes. Would I like to see WotC do it? Meh. |
