The new dragon article is up.
I am liking what they have done with the animate dead spell & the more I see the more I like the avenger.

That spell's gonna provide a lot of motivation to down the Large enemy early in the encounter so the wizard can raise a personal 2x2 space denier with reach. Which, you know, is fine by me.

Still no actual undead-creating (or object-animating) ritual or power?

Why doesn't animate dead count as an undead creating power?

Because it doesn't. :D

(At least not in the article.)

B..because it doesn't, ah, create.. any.. undead creatures? : /

EDIT: Sorry, didn't realize there was a They. Or that I was one. Or that I was complaining.

So we're talking a massive technicality here, right? It animates the dead, but since it doesn't bring a creature with the (undead) keyword into being to wreck up the economy of actions, it really isn't 'creating undead'.

Well, I hope you can explain that to my non-living ogre pal here. Say hello, Stompa.

Aaaanyway, so I take it there is not yet a ritual to actually create undead creatures or animated objects?

Open Grave has the Undead Servitor ritual, which creates a non-attacking minion. Fortunately, that's as bad as it's gotten.

Animate Dead is cool and all, but it's only useful if you're in an encounter against something with reach. Summon Arrowhawk is way better overall, if you ask me.

What article/issue of Dragon is the Avenger (and subsequent powers) highlighted in? Does anyone have a link?

Unfortunately, they aren't. There was an avenger PC at the D&D XP (you can find his sheet floating around here and here, and you can see the entry in PHB2 hereand here). But there hasn't been an official preview, although some additional powers appear in the most recent Necromancy artice.

I cant wait to lvl so I can switch out a utility for the 'corpse explosion' utility, Accursed Souls lol. My fellow players are going to laugh their arses off next time I start blowing up dead bodies. Bunch of minions come running at me. Curse one, use Accursed Souls on it, blast it.. it dies and blows up all them around it buahahaha!

To bad it's a daily, but it does last until the end of an encounter. Only downside is it only affects those you've used Warlocks Curse on, so you cant start chain reactions of minions exploding lol.

Yes, there is. There is an open grave ritual to create an undead servant (that is useless sin combat). The new DDi article also includes a plethora of powers which create undead creatures that aid you on the battlefield, including a wizard spell called animate dead.

Yes, it does. It created an undead creature which you control. That is the purpose of the animate dead spell. That is what it does.

A summoned creature that isn't technically undead because it doesn't technically have the undead keyword and thus doesn't respond as undead do to any other effect in the game? I'm not too concerned about it, but I can see where others might be bothered.

Other then that, you're attacking with a pretty terrible power, since it uses your standard action, which you could be used to make an implement attack vs. will with an extra debuff, to make an implement attack vs. AC with only marginally more damage and no debuff.

Sure, you also get an extra dude on the field to block attack routes or make opp attacks, but for a daily you'd really be better off tossing out a wall of flame or the like. Or at least, so it seems to me. Again, note that you're making implement attacks vs. AC, which means the accuracy of the summon's attacks is so poor that I doubt it will serve as a reasonable deterrant.

I think we'll need to see what innate benefit mastery of the new tome implement will give in the upcoming Arcane Power before we can write these powers off as worthless yet.

I do admit, tho, compared to the 9th level Summon Arrowhawk previewed in thes month's Ampersand, Animate Dead seems a little weak. Arrowhawk has faster movement, flies, shifts 3 before attacking, attacks Ref and can mark its target. Animate Dead might allow the summoning a larger creature and/or one with reach, but that's dependent on 1) the DM placing such a creature in an encounter and 2) killing the creature early enough in the battle for its corpse to be of any use.

DnD isn't about what is the "most powerful", it's about what is the most fun. If animating the dead and using it in battle is more fun for you, or more appropriate for your character, then who cares that the Arrowhawk is more uber. But I guess to some, doing the most damage is what is the most fun for them, so have FUN! :D
