My personal opinion is that the way multi-classing works now, prestige classes would only offer a couple traits. It would almost be better to make them feat packages. |

From the original set of prestige classes Arcane Trickster, Eldrtich Knight, Assassin, Blackguard (Oathbreaker), and Dragon Disciple (Sorcerer bloodline), all are now subclasses that perfectly fit. Shadowdancer is not too far off from the Way of Shadow monk but a rogue subclass similar to the Arcane Trickster could be a later addition.
Horizon Walker, Loremaster, Arcane Archer and Dwarven Defender, are easily feat material. A competant Duelist can be made with the Battlemaster fighter with a heck of a lot more customability, but a College of War bard, a ranger, or a rogue can pick up the martial adept feat for some key abilities.
Mystic Theurge is no longer necessary because of the multiclassing spell progression system. Archmage and Hierophant never made any sense to me. A high level wizard = archmage. 7-9th level spells is an archmage's abilities. A wizard who dipped into another class is a non archmage, someone who stuck with it to the end is an archmage. Same for clerics/druids and hierophants
Some of the setting specific prestige classes can also now be covered with factions. This is where I would like to see more work developed. Knights of Solamnia, Templars of the Sorcerer Kings, The Factions of Sigil, and the Houses of Eberron all make for great factions, while cooling on these organizations giving prestige class abilities and emphasizing how they give roleplaying hooks. |
