Any sign of a new PC game using 4th edition?

Seems like it's been a long while since a new game was out. I think it would be awesome to have a PC game like Baldur's gate come out for us to enjoy!

Hopefully some enlightened soul will point me to the relevant spot

I'd love a KOTOR / Jade Empire style D&D game.

What I'd like to see.

  • Turn Based

  • Eberron

  • Story by Keith Baker or Don Bassingthwaite

  • Set in Khorvaire

  • Why not bring in people from the original 2 Fallout games and Arcanum?

Win should follow from these.

Is Dungeons&Dragons Online going to upgrade to 4e? Thats already an Eberron setting with great graphics.

The problem with DDO is that it's a MMO. Not everyone likes MMOs.

And no, to my knowledge there are no plans of updating to 4E.

I agree with Joni-san. I'd love to see an Eberron based Baldur's Gate style game using 4th edition. Seems so long since we had a good turn based approach to DnD

The only type I see posible, right now, is a Final Fantasy Tactics type... The background can be Eberron, Forgoten realms, even dark sun...

I'm not interesed in an Eberron game, but I would like to see a 4e video game. I was a big fan of Neverwinter Nights under Bioware, so something along those lines would be cool, but not in MMO format. I tried out DDO, and hated it, and it was nothing to do with it being Eberron. MMOs are absolutely unappealing to me. Neverwinter's style of single-player campaign coupled with server-based multiplayer was much more preferable to me.

It's a pity it probably won't happen, but I'd love to see a turn-based combat system in a 4e game. Also, the game's campaign shouldn't be like Neverwinter Nights, where you basically played a glorified courier, quests should be more then running and fetching.

Me too. I'd love, LOVE a kotor 1&2 styled D&D game. I'd also like D&D games in the style of....

Final fantasy 7, 11-2 (missions are awesome) and 12. (single player MMO feel)

Diablo 2 LOD (NOT another D&D low budget dungeon hack like BG1 (ps2) and Heroes (xbox) but more indepth and detailed.

Baldur's gate 2 SoA (PC) - I love this style of rpg.

A D&D rts game that doesn't release broken (I'm looking at you dragonshard!) or exclusively for a handheld. (eww, handhelds)

God of war styled with multipul character choices.

Tekken/streetfighter styled that is not a semi-crap fest game. (LOoking at you Iron and Blood)

Turn based as an option, but not as default. Turn based games are slow moving dinosaurs that should have fully died off years ago. (Frontmission 4 was ruined for me because its a slow moving turn based game with no option to make it real time)

The D&D pc games are not turn based by default and sold well, I wouldn't gamble with that. There are a lot of turn based fans on this site, but I'v never personally met a turned based fan or talked to one on other gaming sites.

Turned based games are usually dull and are not worth the time investment.

As for my personal tastes, I'v played FR. FR has been done and done again. I want DS, DL and EB. More planescape. FR gets really boring after awhile for me. Its the same old same. Final Fantasy does well because its never the same and when it is the same, its a big deal.

Aside from old pc games and Mdosing, almost all the D&D video games have been FR. Whether people buy and play them because they love FR or because thats all there is, is the question. Although I'd buy a Drizzt game (God of war style).

Funny, if it's going to be a strategy game, I prefer FF Tactics/Front Mission, etc type of turn based play.  So I have plenty of time to calculate my moves.  I sometimes take 15 to 20 minutes in FF Tactics just making one character move, and when it happens exactly the way I wanted it to is when I get the feeling of accomplishment.  RTS games I generally have to lessen the difficulty and the game speed to have a chance, and that kind of challenge makes the game unenjoyable for me.

Haldrik: This. Make the D&D video game real-time, but give an option for turn-based.

Also, there are some amazing video game companies out there. Just lease the D&D brand name to one (or more) of them, and let them put the video game(s) together.

(By the way, how does the GSL apply to video games?)

This is what they have done. Atari has the exclusive rights to all D&D videogames and unless they somehow break the contract WotC can not just revoke it until the specified time is up.

PS: It seems as if Atari has at least a new D&D MMOG in the making, at least that's what Turbine (who got the exclusive rights to D&D MMOGs from Atari) is accusing them of.

I have played many MMO's and I am quite tired of them. I don't always have the time to party up with other people and prefer to be able to quest and explore on my own. The problem with MMO's is that the content cannot be easily updated (not saying that turn basd games can).

I loved Baldur's Gate for PC when it came out. Problem I had was all the glitches and the fact that I was running Windows ME. Graphics were excellent. It was a game way ahead of its time - 1UP for Dungeons and Dragons

I thought BG II was excellent as well. Gameplay was smooth - 1UP for Dungeons and Dragons

I loved Kotor for Xbox - RTS, could pause just like BG and BG II, and it wasn't too complicated. - 1UP for BIOWARE

Neverwinter Nights depressed me alot. Graphics were square even if running a high end video card and lots of memory and processor power. I hated the fact that the exapnsions required you to start over at 1st level. To me that was just idiodic. I hated the story line. - Boo for anyone who worked on that mess.

NWN 2 - It seemed as if the gameplay changed completely from NWN. After playing WoW for about 2 years I found the learning curve for NWN2 to be difficult....I am probably just dumb. - Boo

I am all for a turn based capable 4th Edition D&D PC game.

Atari owns the digital gaming rights to D&D and has for sometime now.

They have distanced themselves so much from Turbines DDO that Turbine filed a lawsuit against Atari and is seeking near 30 million dollars.

I heard about they are developing a NWN MMO style (4.0 in the Realms) with Cryptic Studios (since Atari bought them). Thank God it is the realms no more crappy settings like Eberron or the resurfacing Dark Sun.

Plus you have this

Atari's yearly fiscal report has revealed that Cryptic "is working on the development of a series of new games based on Atari's existing and historically successful IPs". (D&D anyone)

That's not what was said. Personally, I agree with what was said. Forgotten Realms and Dragonlance are the two settings I really love. I'm not a big fan of Eberron (though I've found some things about it that are kind of cool) and I abhor the idea of Dark Sun.

My wish list would be a single player, turn-based D&D game where you can build a party of up to 5 or 6 characters and run then through an adventure like Keep on the Shadowfell.  I would love for the H series of adventures to be made into a game like they did with Temple of Elemental Evil with the P and E series as expansions.

I highly doubt that this will ever happen now a days with computer game technology being so advanced.  Audiences for computer games are more sophisticated and I highly doubt that the majority of gamers would really want to play a turn-based game on the computer.  Such a game would probably only appeal to D&D players who want to play, but do not have a regular group.

It probably wouldn't be too hard (just incredibly time consuming) to convert them to Flash or RPGMaker or something. The system might be a bit complicated, to handle interrupts, but I believe it could be done.

They do sell and there is always a "couple"(lol) fans who really love turn based games. But they are the minority by far. For everyone else, real time is the only way to play. If wotc wanted to make the most money, turn based would be the wrong path to follow. This is why, for the most part. D&D games are real time.

Ever play a turn based game online? Ever finish a turn based game online? Ever play a turn based game online as much as other online games? If so, what games, how many games did you finish online and how many players were really online at the same time to play with you... 10? 50 maybe?

Real time > turn based.

Worms and Gunbound come to mind as Turn based games with robust Online play.  Granted they put a time limit on the turns, but that's far preferable to trying to implement forced movement and other 4e staples in real time.

Why would it need to be online?  I personally don't see a need to play with people online much.  Most of the MMOGs I play I play alone.

Personally, I have a hard time seeing a 4e game pulled off well in a real-time format. The following issues seem problematic:

  • Controlling forced movement effects, particularly slides and teleports, would be difficult.

  • Immediate actions (which there are a lot of in 4e) would almost require a pause function, which essentially makes the game turn-based. Even with a pause function, it would be very difficult to make it work well.

  • Tactical positioning is key. In 3e, most of your characters might have been standing still for most of the fight. Now, every encounter involves constant repositioning. Micromanaging movement for an entire party in real time while enemies are moving simultaneously would be a nightmare.

  • Readying actions is too complicated to handle in real time, but a proper menu system could pull off most scenarios in a turn-based format.

All in all, if you take out the factors that you can't really pull off smoothly in real-time, the game stops looking like 4e. Fundamentally, the combat mechanics of 4e are already a turn-based tactical battle system. If you implement the game otherwise, it won't really look like 4e.
