| #1pallin_rahlDec 06, 2008 16:23:11 | Just wondering if anything has been mentioned yet regarding a 4e Psionics Handbook. I was a big fan of Psionics as they refined it for 3.5e and furthermore see it as an integral part of Eberron (which I know is coming out for 4e in June 09). P.S. Off topic, but any word on 4e Monks yet? (I know Bard, Barbarian & Druid are slated for the 4e PHB2) |

Most people are betting PHB3 (given that PHB2 are Arcane, Divine and Primal) and each Power Source gets their own Power book. People are thinking that if Psionics come out in PHB3 it means a good possibility of Dark Sun being the next setting. |

Same situation for the monk. It's getting it's own supplement sometime in between now and summer. At least that's what I've heard from people, could be wrong. We have the WotC calendars from now until August next year. Nothing about psionics in any of them. |

| #6doctorhookDec 07, 2008 16:00:25 | Suffice to say, if we're fortunate enough to see Psionics in a 2010 release, we'll probably have D&DI previews by this time next year. IF. |
| #7gnarfflingerDec 08, 2008 13:08:56 | So it could be Psionic and Ki debuting in PHB III in 2010, then One power book in summer the other in the fall... |

I'm going to guess (and it's been heavily speculated) that the PHB3 will focus on Psionic, Ki, and Shadow classes. The Monk and the psionic classes are in demand and probably won't be put off for much longer. Shadow will probably beat out Elemental because its flavor is more unique and its archetypes (illusion and necromancy) more firmly established. After PHB2, they'll probably have done as much as they could with the martial, divine, and arcane types (given the difficulty in coming up with an idea for a martial controller class), and I don't think they'll add many additional classes (besides the artificer for the Eberron setting). |

I'm not sure you can understand the Shadow power source without also understanding the Shadowcaster from Tome of Magic. The design process seems to have gone like this- the Shadow power source was included. In 3e, that meant "mirror magic," reflections, illusions that were themselves reflections, and a sort of super-magic vibe in which shadow magic was better than regular magic in some ways and could control regular magic, but where shadow magic was harder to use. Then, illusion and necromancy, two things usually owned by arcane magic, were given to the Shadow power source in order to fill out the power source further and to ensure that each power source had a solid shtick. What that means is that the illusion and necromancy themes of shadow magic will probably be interpreted through the lens of regular shadow magic, instead of the other way around. |
