| #5alitainMay 11, 2009 0:58:05 | I'd see Primal classes getting just an animal companion as a feat choice similar to familiars. Maybe even so far as to make them special. Like they're small creatures with different modes, who knows. As for Divine, I admit I think familiars would be nice for them as well but maybe something more like a guardian spirit. Like you take a feat and gain a spirit guardian that you can bring forth in combat to aid and protect you. A Guardian Angel you know? |

The only one that I could possibly see is a Paladin Mount appearing in Divine Power. Okay, animal companions don't just have to be ONLY for the ranger. Plus AV says in the blurb with the mount stuff that while there's going to be a beastmaster build, it hints that animal companions are just limited to rangers. And while yes guardian spirits are basically what the Shaman has, there are divine protective spirits as well and thus could be done for divine classes. The difference being the shaman's spirit companion is a class necessity and core mechanic. Without it, the class wouldn't be possible. But having say, like Arcane Familiars, the Divine Classes having a feat that gives them a guardian angel type spirit it's not something that's a core function of any class but it can be a beneficial add on. Same as Familiars are to Arcane classes. The way I'm seeing Divine Guardians(shoot me for cheesy name later, *sigh*), is basically like the Arcane familiars in terms of passive and active mode. The difference is that passive is a divine granted skill bonus, like the passive familiar attributes. But instead of say having a bat that while passive just clings to your shoulder and sleeps, a Guardian wouldn't actually "be there" while in passive. Like this. You have...to be cliche...Cherub Guardian Spirit. Passive mode it gives you a +2 to Diplomacy. But you don't have a little cherub floating around or sitting on your shoulder, it's not there. But say in battle your wounded and choose to activate the Cherub. Now in active mode it appears in the air above you and heals you for say healing surge value once per encounter. My basic idea would be a reactionary system. Maybe have a passive bonus but each Divine Guardian could grant a special ability in reaction to certain things. Like getting crit'd on, or dropping to bloodied, or being poison. So their active mode would only be activated as an Immediate Reaction to a particular trigger. I think that would be a plausible system. Not necessary but fun to have. Like familiars now, I love the fluff more than the straight mechanics. And man, I'm sorry but I thought the pally mount was pointless. You get to summon a horse because of divine favor? Puleeze. But again if they make a Pally Mount in Divine Power I'll still look it over and maybe I'll like it, maybe I wont no big. |
