| #1rmn498Mar 19, 2009 23:09:45 | It looks like there's a new Arcane Power excerpt out to tease us. It's for the Swordmage paragon path Arcane Hunter and requires the new aegis of ensnarement. Unfortunately, although the article itself is up, all the crunch is in a pdf that isn't linked properly. Anyone having any luck getting this pdf? I looks like the link is pointing to the wrong file name or something. |
| #2zylo_drizztMar 19, 2009 23:33:54 | no luck here. |
| #3kelric_argarMar 20, 2009 0:14:47 | Sorry, I failed as well. |
| #4klaustheprinceMar 20, 2009 3:40:09 | Sorry, I failed as well. You didn't. WotC did, as it's doing too often these times. ![]() |
| #5kelric_argarMar 20, 2009 3:46:27 | You didn't. WotC did, as it's doing too often these times. Umm... thanks for the back pat. Really though, did we have to look at a swordmage paragon path preview at 1:00 AM, or whatever time it was when you checked? It's not that big of a deal. |
| #6the_fanMar 20, 2009 5:41:45 | You didn't. WotC did, as it's doing too often these times. My guess is that these things are handled by an automated script that updates the website at midnight. Like all automated systems, sometimes they screw up. Since no one is actually in the WotC offices at midnight, it isn't until sometime the next day that it gets fixed. Generally later afternoon, because they do have other work to do and they have to figure out what went wrong to begin with. |
| #7ranadielMar 20, 2009 6:35:30 | It is up, I don't know what you guys were talking about. There was just a typo in link. It has been up the entire time. :P |

Couldn't figure out what the correct file name in the link should've been. Thanks. |

The link as-is still doesn't work. I would like to be able to just correct it in my browser and take a peek at the new PP. Of course, that is, until I just go out and buy the PHBII. |
| #10killer_dm_dupMar 20, 2009 8:49:40 | So, in order to be an arcane hunter from Arcane Power you have to be a swordmage, but swordmages are in a Forgotten Realm Campaign setting book right? So in order to play something from the Arcane Power book, I have to buy a non-core book? I know this has probably happened in 3.x, but I was hoping that core/splat books would not require Campaign books. Anyone else remember WoTC designers talking about a generic game world and rules would be Campaign agnostic. |
| #11the_fanMar 20, 2009 9:00:47 | No, they said that even setting-specific material could be core. Which is why drow and genasai feats show up in Martial Power and PHB2. If you don't play FR, a swordmage should (in theory) still be balanced in your generic-setting game. If you as the DM decide not to allow it, then a small portion of subsequent books will also not be allowed in your game. |

This is exactly what I did not like about 3.x and now it is happening all over again. if you allow Swordmages...some one will want to play a "gem head" and so on... |
| #13MarandahirMar 20, 2009 9:25:17 | I don't play FR. However, Genasi, Drow, Darkpact, and Swordmage are all awesome choices whatever game I'm playing, so it's all good. You don't have to buy the Campaign Guide, just the Player's Guide, which is MOSTLY just crunch anyways. And it's good crunch, because since everything is core material now, we don't have second-rate material appearing in Setting-specific books. I NEVER bought a single Setting book in 3.x. But the material in FRPG is actually really useful. I even found reason to adapt the Spellscarred, through refluffing and modifying some damage types, to create a blightscarred like character for my own setting. If you REALLY don't want to have anything to do with FR, even if it's only to get your hands on the Arcane Defender class and one of the coolest Warlock Pacts made, you don't need to buy it. Just know that they WILL be covered in Arcane Power and other supplements. Oh, and thank you Renadiel; the link is still broken on the website even though it's well into Friday. |

I did not know that, I guess I assumed that the new FR books would do what the old ones did... rewrite every race and make significant changes to some core rules. Since i did not want to plunk down the cash to check it out, I never paid any attention to it. |
| #15hvulpesMar 20, 2009 9:47:44 | I did not know that, I guess I assumed that the new FR books would do what the old ones did... rewrite every race and make significant changes to some core rules. Since i did not want to plunk down the cash to check it out, I never paid any attention to it. Between 3/4 to 1/2 of the book is Realm specific with details on how to play a character in the realms. The two races are mostly neutral in development. The one class is mostly neutral, the pact is also, but the Spellscar multiclass class is realm specific. Yet it could be adapted for non-realms use if you can come up with a cause. Paragons have both neutral and specific aspects, so some adaption might be needed (like a shadow based Swordmage Paragon is linked to the Shades of the realms, so a new origin linking them perhaps to the Raven Queen would be need). It goes on to Area of origins for characters, which are realms specific. Yet some of the geography could be adapted like the history as well. It also gives examples of regional bonuses which can be adapted to you game. Feats are a mixed bag, some are general like many Genasi and Swordmage feats. Some like the feat for Sun Elves (Eladrin really) and Moon Elves (eladrin) are specific but could be changed to eladrin of different clans or areas. Rituals have some specific for the realms like those linked to spellplague and Spellscars, but most could be used as is. The last part is a section for common background info like the Spellplague and the gods. This is basically the FRPG. |

If so, could you tell me what you did to get it to work? Thanks in advance! Edit: Got it! It's ..._pp_swordmage.pdf Thanks! |
| #17TheLoneClericMar 20, 2009 10:19:08 | Looks like Wotc's server is having issues. |

I, too, am not playing FR but my PC is still a swordmage. A drow swordmage (duskblade) abducted from Eberron to boot. It shouldn't matter where certain CLASSES are from, because they all have/find a place in any setting. I cannot wait to see what the new aegis power does. It sounds like it causes some kind of immobilization condition upon the marked target. Immediate interrupt or reaction? Any thoughts? |
| #20ranadielMar 20, 2009 17:07:16 | Still won't come up for me. Have you tried clicking on the link in my previous post? |
| #21askanipsionMar 20, 2009 19:00:05 | Have you tried clicking on the link in my previous post? Ahh it was cause I already had adobe acrobat open for another file so it refused to load - now it loaded! ![]() |
| #2222_Over_7Mar 20, 2009 20:50:44 | I think the biggest highlight for me was the 11th level Encounter power - 3[W]+INT. Looks like Swordmages could be getting a damage bump in Arcane Power. |

It shouldn't matter where certain CLASSES are from, because they all have/find a place in any setting. Immobilization is a possibility, but I wonder how it could be implemented. Immobilizing an enemy doesn't do much for your ally getting attacked unless it's immobilized for more than one turn. Perhaps the Aegis could immobilize (save ends)? Personally, I think that the Aegis of Ensnarement will be the opposite of the Aegis of Assault: It will be an immediate interrupt that teleports the marked enemy adjacent to you, making you the new target for the attack. Which would be interesting, but I can ensnaring swordmages getting beat up pretty quickly if this is the case. It'll be hard pressed to prove more useful than Shielding :D |
| #24the_badger_02Mar 20, 2009 23:48:39 | So, from what we've seen of this PP, what do we think the new feature will be focused on? I'm not sure I can figure out why this PP requires the new feature, it seems to me at the moment that it would be just fine if it were open. Maybe there will be something about it. |

I hope they do because there are very few options to help them do some meaningful damage in my opinion.. Barbarian and Fighter being the only ones that really come to mind |

Here is small hint: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/4pr/20090202 "(the ensnaring swordmage, who foils his foes with cunning footwork, entangling spells, and dazzling swordplay)" |
| #27BolongoMar 23, 2009 13:31:36 | "(the ensnaring swordmage, who foils his foes with cunning footwork, entangling spells, and dazzling swordplay)" Wonder what the secondary ability for that will be? I could see Dex, but that would make it ideal for Eladrin, and according to the fluff they're traditionally Shielding... Perhaps Wis, which would give Deva a good option? |
