Like many other people I'm looking forward to Arcane Power and seeing what it will have in store for the Wizard and soon the Bard. We've seen the Summoner-build preview, but I wasn't thrilled about it. I'm wondering if they will expand on the Dragon article regarding Wizards and Illusion spells. Does anyone have any insight on this?

I'll put my money on some but not a full build. Given that as far as we know that is gonna be more of a Shadow Power trait, so I doubt they will take away all its oomph by having the exact same in Arcane Power.

I was such a L5R fiend back in the day. Probably could be again, if the cards were more readily available here...

Anyway, on illusions, my pick is "Maybe, but I doubt it." A bunch of illusions would cut into the upcoming shadow controller's territory, unless they have some clear delineation. Then again, using the old arcane schools as a rough guide, there doesn't appear to be much else. Evocation and conjuration are taken, enchantment, illusion and necromancy are reserved, divination doesn't really lend itself to a 4e build, and transmutation lacks cohesion. Abjuration, perhaps? It's a bit of a left-field pick, but it wouldn't surprise me to see the fourth wizard build (if one exists) leaning towards that.

You mean the fifth build? We already know that the fourth wizard build will be the tome build which focuses on summoning.

Control wizard, war wizard, summoning wizard - Was there another build I've overlooked?

I dunno, I was talking about orb wizard, staff wizard, wand wizard, and tome wizard. I assumed that each of them had a build associated with them. My bad if they don't.

OK, I get you now. I think that orb's associated with control, wand with war, and staff can be anything. So it wouldn't surprise me if a build suited to staffs shows up in Arcane Power.

If that's the case, then Abjuration wouldn't be a bad guess considering the defensive nature of the Staff implement.

It would be interesting to see how protection themed spels are done. Probably walls for attacks, and defensive utilities. May also get more abilities that give concealment.

I was under the impression that Staff of Defense was for "war wizards," the type that like close powers, so that they can get close to melee combat.

Mechanically, yes, you're probably right. Thematically, however, Abjuration is all about awesome magical defense, so the Staff of Defense dovetails nicely into that. I think an Abjurer Wizard would make a better close-ranged controller than the War Wizard could, given the predisposition to barriers, defenses, magic circles of warding, and if a Wizard is going to be near melee range more often than not, it would behoove him to pack on the defense.

And, from a roleplaying stand-point, their Utilities and Rituals would be amazing in and out of combat.

Well according to a preview we saw a while back ( I think it was a couple of months ago) there are going to be illusions in Arcane power. Things might of changed since then, but I'm fairly sure that there will be, at the very least some paragon and epic illusion spells to complement the heroic illusion spells from the dragon article.
