Bring back iconic characters with the Essentials!

May 30, 2010 1:30:37 Last week I was flipping through my old 3rd ed books and I noticed that Krusk, Lidda, Tordek, Jozan and the others did not get a comeback with 4th edition. And how could I forget about Hennet? (Ok, so we could do without Mialee, but still...).

With the Essentials series geared towards beginners, it would be great to see iconic characters again. These could either be the old characters upgraded, or a completely new set. In any case they would help give 4th edition a face.

Pretty please?

May 30, 2010 2:01:46 Tordek, Varis and Lidda are mentioned in the PHB as example adventurers of their respective races.

Hennet got a piece of flavour text in Arcane Power and a picture in one of the 4th edition books (I don't remember which off the top of my head).

Regdar is pictured in multiple 4th edition books (usually injured/dead/petrified).

I'm pretty sure we've seen Lidda a couple of times in 4th edition art as well.

Ralph Horsley paints a very Lidda-like halfling rogue in his pictures, as well as a Regdar-like fighter.

Who are these characters?

In 3e sourcebooks, whenever they needed an example for something, they always had a particular character for each race or class. So, instead of just saying 'As an elf, you get (X)', it would be written 'For example, Mialee gets (X) because she's an elf' or 'Gimble's Bardic Training ...' and that stuff.

Of course, these characters didn't really have stats because they were constantly being plugged into different examples across multiple sourcebooks.

Also, most of these characters are listed amongst racial names.

What I found strange was they made Sovellis an Eladrin rather than an Elf.

Mialee is also an Eladrin.

I have high hope that they'd use Jozen, Lidda, Tordek, and Mialee as an example 4-player party in the new Red Box, considering the 4 races in it are Human, Hafling, Dwarf, and Elf, and the four classes are Cleric, Rogue, Fighter, and Wizard. However, Mialee is now an Eladrin, not an elf, so maybe not.

Since esentiles is the red box I would rather see StrongHeart the paladin instead.

Hennet was near the back of PHB3
The signiture characters were also the peices in the D&D clue set.

I think ember the monk showed up also.

And of course Gimble's original art shows up in arcane power.

And I think past issues of Dragon had their stats. Mialee's charisma of 8 was mocked constantly as being too high ;)

If I'm not mistaken I believe they were also player characters that belonged to employees of WOTC. I think. Or something of that nature at least.

Well, Charisma =/= looks, but Mialee WAS butt-ugly.
