Are there plans to release a fleshed out book for the generic campaign setting (Points of Light....or so some other posts have called it)? I played Forgotten Realms in the old days so not really wanting to have that be my setting. Eberron seemed strange when I flipped through I wanted something more generic. Just wondering what is on the release calender.

There may be plans, but I doubt it.
There is nothing on the release calendar.

Any new (or old) campaign setting at all? I just don't want to buy FR or Eberron.

Yep there will be another setting book next year but we dont yet know what it is. Might be an old setting revamped or WOTC might catch us completely off guard and publish a brand new setting.

As I understand it the plan is to release materials for one campaign setting each year. FR last year, Eberron this year, we don't know yet what it's going to be next year.

Ok thank you, good to know...I guess I'll just home brew for now. Might go look at the new Eberron material when it comes out and see if it works more for me this time around.

Not sure how much it will have changed from 'last time around' as i dont think the timeline etc is particularly moving that much, if at all.

Personally i love the Eberron setting - it brought me back into D&D after a gap of 20 years !

Considering how hostile the FR fans reacted to the 4E FR changes (I really wonder how well FR sells compared to 3E) I don't think there will be that many changes. Although, doesn't WotC change Dragonmarks rather heavily?

You might take a look at Pathfinder's campaign setting known as Golarion. While there is nothing particularly ground-breaking about it, it does manage to mangle together a bunch of fantasy tropes to make for an interesting setting. It has a slightly pulp influence to it, but the lands run the gamut from the revolutionary France type land of Gult (complete with guillotines!) to the Ravenloft inspired lands of Ustalav. The deserts of Osirion provide an ancient Egypt analog while the lands of the Linnorm Kings and the Holds of the Mammoth Lords provide your Scandanavian and pre-historic influences. You even get a Lost World type of area if you venture to the inside of the planet! Oh, and I forgot to mention you get guns as well, although they don't really play a major roll; but they're there if you want them.

Each area gets a two page spread (sometimes more for important lands) detailing capital city, cities of import and their populations, the current ruler and the reigning religions. There is a huge amount of wiggle room, however, for expansion of each area with your own ideas. Again, nothing is astoundingly groundbreaking, but each land offers something unique with various plot hooks seeded throughout. 4e's classes all fit in nicely with a minimum of effort as well. The only sticking point might be some of the races (Dragonborn) and the advantages you get from the lands as each land usually includes some type of trait or bonus from having been born or raised there, but these are usually "+2 to a certain skill or ability" and can be adapted with minimal effort.

I know this sounds like a Paizo schill, but I think it's one of the better settings out there and can easily be adapted to 4e quite easily. I'm waiting to see what they do with Eberron before I decide which one I want to use for an upcoming campaign.

The entire point of the PoL is that isn't not fleshed out, so DMs can make it their own.

I always play my own homebrew worlds because thats half the fun for me. At least half! On the other hand I buy a lot of campaign setting books. I use them for inspiration. I also just enjoy reading them. Right now though I do not like the Eberron fantasy-tech world. Its interesting enough just not my thing. I own a ton of old Forgotten Realms stuff so not really all that hot to buy the FR campaign setting.

1. I would definitely buy anything totally new.
2. I would buy Greyhawk or Mystara. I'd really like to see Mystara.

Dislikes
1. Anything thats not fairly close to traditional fantasy. No Darksun. No Eberon. I'm just speaking for myself here.

Also as an aside. I would love to see a well mapped well detailed city in the vein of Monte Cooks Ptolus. I'd buy those all day long. In fact I'd just buy the maps. Give me a book of great detailed city maps. I'll stock them. :-).

It's a misconception that "Points of Light" is a setting. It's a framework. Almost all core lore is a framework. They give you locations, adventures, themes, a pantheon, a cosmology, and let you take it from there. There's as much work or as little work for you to do, at your choosing. Frankly, if you have a Dungeon subscription, there's almost nothing to do at all. Just put the locations on graph paper, and you're set.

If you want something not Forgotten Realms or Eberron, they've given you ALOT to work with. They've put together all of the trappings of a campaign setting with the core materials, except for mapping it and thereby giving it boundaries.

As for the next setting, my bet is HEAVILY on Oriental Adventures. There are many between-the-lines things that suggest this (I can cite many examples if asked). This would also be something they would do, considering it's something that would be both a departure from what they've been putting now, and also they wouldn't make the mistake of completely neglecting past materials from 3rd Edition. They'd fill a niche, do something new, and open the door for the Ki powersource and Psionics to make a big debut in 4th Edition.

I agree Oriental Adventures is a likely candidate but I'm not sure it would be released so early. Dark Sun is much more likely in that it IS different (desert setting), is inherently points of light and showcases Psionics.

Don't you think that's fairly contradictory? I'm assuming your love of Greyhawk is nostalgia based and not based on it not being traditional fantasy work (because it IS traditional).

I completely agree that Dark Sun is more likely. It's probably the big favorite. Also, I've started a separate thread for my theory. Please feel free to check it out :D .

Agreed I like the traditional stuff. Which is why Eberron doesn't catch my interest. FR is just kind of tired to me so I'm not inclined to buy it but I have no old material sitting around so might have to if I don't want to completely make up my own map and world.

I love the Elsir Vale, from the DMG. It's really awesome, and you can apply tons of core stuff to the framework, and tack stuff on to the edges. There are plenty of appropriate additions in each issue of Dungeon. If I weren't so interested in FR and Eberron, I would to this. I always have a secret longing to, and then hear the call of a great Realms story arc. :D

I am definitely the opposite, give me:
  • Planescape
  • Dark Sun
  • Eberron

In general give me; Opposite-Shadowrun (Fantasy with Cyberpunk, not Cyberpunk with Fantasy), Steampunk, Pseudoscience, Dieselpunk, New Weird (though that is essentially Planescape, especially Sigil), etc.

Hell my current setting has Spirit-Hacking, ley-line internet, Spirits possessing cybernetic bodies as their own, Mecha, etc. Set in a endless winter because of the separation of the Spirit World and our World.

My next one is going to be set on a endless plane, with all manner of planar races. While a new universe tries to beat away the planes old reality through various means. The new universes physical representation being a endless blackness in the sky with megalithic tendrils and tentacles dangling down.

So yeah... Give me all the non-traditional fantasy you can get.
