| #1zagora_01Dec 07, 2010 15:51:38 | I tried to find some reference to it, but couldn't. Anyone know when the character builder will update? They said they are back on track, that means it should update today. Thanks No sarcastic remarks or bashing comments please. I'm just trying to get some idea of when. |
| #2modern_iconoclastDec 07, 2010 16:00:05 | Here. |
| #3zagora_01Dec 07, 2010 16:04:08 | That link only references the compendium and adventure tools. The character building wasn't mentioned, and when I checked before posting it wasn't updated with the new hero's book. |
| #4alitainDec 07, 2010 19:21:18 | Not trying to be bashing, but it seems you haven't been paying much attention to events of the last couple months. The character builder we all know and love is a thing of the past. It no longer is supported by wizards/D&D group. The new character builder is online only, located by link on the main D&D page on the right. Being online it doesn't need to be updated as we know it, they'll just update things as they see fit and it'll be there or wont be, no having to log on and download anything. |
| #5tsukinousagiDec 07, 2010 22:10:21 | How on earth does a person come on a forum and miss such obvious details? |
| #6BendBarsLiftGatesDec 07, 2010 23:17:02 | It's still a legitimate question, and I don't think the OP missed anything. The Compendium was updated today with a new round of material, including classes from Heroes of the Forgotten Kingdoms. But, the online CB still doesn't have those, as of my last check. He is wondering (as am I) when that will be available in the CB. |
| #7davidgivenDec 08, 2010 0:54:27 | yeah--I think it is a fair question--I was expecting the newish essentials stuff to show up today as well--who does not want to try his hand at creating a Druid that does not suck! The link above has this: The frenzy of releasing a whole new integrated system of tools has been very high these last six months. There are still a few more things we’d like to get done before the holidays, including an update to the character builder and the adventure tools mentioned above which has me a little concerned. The ability to push new content should not require the services of the staff that built the new integrated system, right? I mean we invented Content Management Systems for a reason--the Essentials content people should have a simple work flow that moves content online with out developers making changes--developers should be blowing their bonuses in Hawaii for the holidays at this point while operational teams resolve the open bugs and content people do their daily editing and approvals--working to push all the content out to us when appropriate. Which is looks like they may be doing, right? "Including an update to the character builder" seems to indicate that a December release to the oCB may still be in my 2010 future, which would be fantastic. Thanks, David S. |

He is wondering (as am I) when that will be available in the CB. Thank you, you summed up my reason for the post exactly. They stated they were back on track. That means the character builder should have been updated yesturday. I would be satisfied just to have a date confirmed and have them hold to it. |
| #9ah_stormbringerDec 08, 2010 13:51:48 | They said that the online CB was going to be easier to update and we still have n update for material that is almost a month old. When is this coming? |
| #10iqwinnDec 08, 2010 19:01:21 | My CB got the December 2010 update, with info from Heroes of the Forgotten Kingdom, Rules Compendium, and Monster Vault (Heroic Tier), as well as Dungeon 183 and Dragon 392. |
| #11SamrinDec 08, 2010 19:25:38 | My CB got the December 2010 update, with info from Heroes of the Forgotten Kingdom, Rules Compendium, and Monster Vault (Heroic Tier), as well as Dungeon 183 and Dragon 392. No you didn't, you only have patch notes saying you did. I see it, too. No new content is in there, and there was no patch. |
| #12MarandahirDec 09, 2010 9:15:11 | That said, they didn't say WHEN the updated material for online CB would go up, just that they're trying to get it in before the holiday break. They didn't give us a date specifically because they don't want people to feel crushed or betrayed if or when that date is missed. They never said the CB would update alongside the Compendium because that would be giving it a date. Just wait. It'll update before the month is out. If they said they're striving to do that, than they'll want to at least keep that – because it's something that made a lot of fans hopeful and happy when they said it. |
| #13NyarlathotepDec 09, 2010 10:01:16 | They didn't give us a date specifically because they don't want people to feel crushed or betrayed if or when that date is missed. So instead they'd rather look like they lied when they said they were "back on track" with regular updates? If, better than a week into the month, things are so uncertain that they can't even be positive IF we will get an update, much less when, that speaks volumes about how far NOT "back on track" they are. |
| #14yargonDec 10, 2010 12:07:17 | Not to compare this to other online content delivered updates, but her are a few simple things that I believe would improve the customer relations and our expectations.
|
| #15MarandahirDec 11, 2010 11:51:52 | Actually, most people were happy with the honest about them trying to get this update in sometime this month, and that they didn't know WHEN it would be, but they're pushing with all their might to get it in before the holidays. |
| #16mewarmo990Dec 13, 2010 1:50:19 | In the update, Trevor did say this regarding the OCB update. So they're clearly working on it, but probably found it prudent not to announce an official date. And that leaves us with the upcoming Character Builder update. We’re looking at implementing some bug fixes, increasing stability, adding some new features (including an export feature), and adding content from Heroes of the Forgotten Kingdoms, Dragon 392, and Dungeon 183. |
| #17thaxDec 13, 2010 19:12:10 | That was for the WEBCB, not the CBC. |
| #18MarandahirDec 14, 2010 16:56:32 | That was for the WEBCB, not the CBC. Which is what we're talking about, thaX. The old Character builder will no longer be supported. You have an account. Use it. Open up the Web CharBuilder. |
| #19MarandahirDec 17, 2010 15:56:05 | …AND… AS I SAID WOULD HAPPEN, WotC_Trevor just announced that the CharBuilder will get updated on Tuesday the 21st – with an export function allowing you to save more characters by saving files to your computer; as well as including HotFK, Dragon 392, Dungeon 183, and fixing the following BUGS:
Also, all monsters from the Monster Vault are set to join the D&Di Compendium the same day. HOWEVER, the online AdventureTools/MonsterBuilder is being pushed back to next month as a result of moving this forward. |
| #20SamrinDec 17, 2010 16:02:05 | …AND… Link? |
| #21MarandahirDec 17, 2010 16:04:10 | community.wizards.com/go/thread/view/758... Also, I linked you to it in the thread you said it was sickening that it hadn't been announced yet. |
| #22SamrinDec 17, 2010 16:06:38 | community.wizards.com/go/thread/view/758... Interesting, but it doesn't say that they're fixing Mages. That's my biggest issue, lol. |
| #23MarandahirDec 17, 2010 16:40:28 | community.wizards.com/go/thread/view/758... What's your Mage issue? |
| #24SamrinDec 17, 2010 16:42:19 | community.wizards.com/go/thread/view/758... Mages can't choose wizard at-wills. It's a bug. dbmeboy has a workaround, but it's kind of a pain. |
| #25MarandahirDec 17, 2010 17:09:19 | community.wizards.com/go/thread/view/758... That's a non-issue. They can choose them if it's in a non-essentials building. Quick Essentials Build means Essentials only, so no normal Wizard at-wills. |
| #26SamrinDec 17, 2010 17:26:50 | community.wizards.com/go/thread/view/758... It doesn't work. It's a bug. It lets you choose wizard encounter and daily powers, but not at-wills. It's in the list of known issues. |
| #27MarandahirDec 17, 2010 20:05:56 | Oh. Well, known issues are being worked through over time. It's not like they can fix every bug. The bug I reported hasn't been fixed yet, either. |
| #28thaxDec 17, 2010 22:17:51 | On another front, it should not matter that one chooses "Essentials" over "Custom" when making a Mage, you should be able to choose At Wills that are available to you. If you don't want to choose powers from other books, then don't choose them, don't have the program limit your choices for you. - - End of Line. |
| #29SamrinDec 18, 2010 4:43:39 | On another front, it should not matter that one chooses "Essentials" over "Custom" when making a Mage, you should be able to choose At Wills that are available to you. If you don't want to choose powers from other books, then don't choose them, don't have the program limit your choices for you. The essentials options is just a quick rolled character from the essentials book... which is a quick start rules book. It's the equivalent of the quick rolled character from the old CB. If you want to customize further, you choose the home campaign. The program doesn't limit your choices for you. It lets you choose whether you want to do a fast essentials character, or do the work yourself. The Mage not being able to choose wizard at-wills is a bug in the CB. dbmeboy has found a workaround to let you do it. |
| #30zelanniiDec 18, 2010 9:38:50 | Given the issues with the new builder, the fact my guys can no longer each have access to the software without having an account, the face we have to be online to use it (which I can not do at work on my lunch breaks, the 1 hour a day I can really use!), the lack of house-rule tweaking ability (critical to our current character line up in TWO active campaigns), and the fact we were both not consulted in advance (let along a beta period), and with how "easier" this is for them and continued other missed promises and dates yet no drop in monthly price, this was a very easy decision to come to. We complained, we game them time to reconsidder and/or fix bugs and missing features, and all they did was delay an update that including nothing we asked for.
Account closed. There's 4 people paying per month they can add to the tally of what this decision cost them. they're welcome to email us and invite us back when the old builder is active again, and when it's $5 per month, or $10 if the add the game table and other tools we were promised in te back of my 1st edition 4e guides. |

All of your complaints except the first one are valid. Having to have a subscription to access ddi content is not a valid complaint. They should never have made it a downloadable service in the first place. I can sympathize with everything else, though I despise house rules. The original CB didn't really have house rule support, either. It would allow you to make your own powers up, yes... but it didn't calculate the math for you or anything if you did. Also, you'll never see a subscription cost go down. That's just silly. |
| #32thaxDec 18, 2010 12:11:57 | Please note, your ability to allow players to use the CB is not hendered. Log in, launch the WEBCB, and then let them use it. Whatever rules and regulations Wizards tries to met out, nothing it gonna prevent the use of their CB by more than the subscriber. That they don't have their own copy anymore is immaterial. |
| #33MarandahirDec 18, 2010 19:42:10 | Please note, your ability to allow players to use the CB is not hendered. Log in, launch the WEBCB, and then let them use it. Whatever rules and regulations Wizards tries to met out, nothing it gonna prevent the use of their CB by more than the subscriber. That they don't have their own copy anymore is immaterial. Is trouble for some people who play with people who aren't nearby (live across the country and play using a virtual gametable of some sort like RPTools or GameTable). That said, you could still take what the players tell you to put in, save their characters as PDFs, and send it to them over mail or IM. So it's not like you're particularly impacted by only one person using the CharBuilder at a time. |
| #34kletian999Dec 23, 2010 9:48:27 | You know, they could have put some kind of registration system into the offline character builder- which would have it store an expiration date based on your subscription which it updates when it's online, but otherwise functions as it did before. Granted some people would crack the registration, but there's a strong line between "people who used cracked software" and "people who aren't paying regularly because the software works without it." |
