Question for those that can actually read the article(obviously I can't), but I'm curious about one thing.  I know this generally doesn't happen, but do they have a katana as a weapon in the article?  My friend's a big fan of katanas and has been annoyed it hasn't appeared in any of the 4th books.  He was hoping that the release of all these Asian themed themes and builds, it may appear.  Well thanks!

No new weapon, but I don't see any reason to not use the 3.x katana rules (aka katana = bastard sword)

Between longsword, broadsword, bastard sword and fullblade I don't actually think there is room for any stat-combantion for a seperate katana weapon.

I'd be inclined to use the scimitar, myself. Fortunately, it's not an issue I've had to deal with.

I forgot about scimitar and falchion. So two more stat-combinations alreay used.

All you need to make a weapon feel like a katana is high crit and versatile.  +3 of course.  Light or Heavy blade, as depending on make could go either way.

Oh yeah we have already homebrewed a katana which is basically like the 3.5 but yeah with high crit and versatile or whatever, can't remember the stats.  Just curious if they may have actually done one up for 4th in the article.  But you considering all the various swords already out there there's little squeeze room for more so I'm not surprised they haven't yet.

I'd actually be inclined towards suggesting that a Superior 2-handed Light Blade wouldn't go amiss - maybe +3/1d10 or 2d4 - and would fit nicely with the pop-culture outlook on the katana.

So it would be a light blade version of the bastard sword or 1h versatile falchion that could work.

Essentially, yes.  Probably +3/2d4/versatile is better than 2-handed.  The damage support for light blades fits the popculture katana to a t, and there's design space for such a weapon.  It fits nicely.

It's a longsword.

Would model the greatsword -> bastard sword upgrade, you really found a possible stat combination that's still open.

superior, +3, light blade, 1d10, 2 handed, high crit is what i would vote for.

you could also make a case for it being defensive, but that is style specfic as far as parrying and junk goes

There's a very good reason not to use that rule.  Nobody is inherently proficient with the bastard sword (since the theme doesn't give that proficiency), so that means you have to spend your first-level feat on that proficiency.  Terrible idea.

I say be flexible - longsword or bastardsword dependent on whether you have superior weapon proficiency.
