So, the D&D miniatures announcement. Still not seeing warband style packs but a step in that direction, so I can deal with that. And the more PC style minis could be good

But this...
Each package contains 3 PC minis: 2 males and 1 female, and 3 unique power cards featuring brand new class powers. All three of the figures in the package will be visible so you’ll know exactly which pack to pick for your game.

I read that as brand new class powers from the PH2.

Plus I get the impression the Hero Packs are non-randomized

Totally on the other side of this one, I gotta' say. The most restrictive part of the new game for me is the slim number of powers. I read that there were exclusive powers available through the minis kits and all of a sudden I have a real reason to buy minis now. I love it. Personally I would love to see a ton of new options for my characters and players. Nothing wrong with that.

I'm currently on the fence about the idea of powers unique to the Hero packs. On one hand it's no different than buying a really tiny splat book. OTOH it reminds me of Blizzard making a CCG, and at that point I feel the urge to dig up the Penny Arcade comic.

Haven't seen the comic. I guess my thing is that powers feel so limited so far, like there's only a handful of tricks you can pull out of your hat. Having the power cards almost work like a CCG feels like we'd be talking about blowing that up huge. Folks would be able to make characters from a pool of dozens, maybe hundreds of choices. I love options, and the idea that you could hold a deck sized fist full of possibilites for a character seems like nothing but good.

...well so long as they're good choices.

Two things combine to make this change a problem for me.

First is the fact that I'm a teenager and its not like I'm going to have the money to buy dozens of packs of minis and the books

Second is the fact that I couldn't care less about the minis and would just assume get everything I need through the books than have to get boxes of plastic figures that I'll probably never use.

I guess I'm just gonna have to play outa the books and see how that works for me, and hope the minis wont become even more essential to the game than wizards seems to want to make them.

One would assume, that given WotC's promises, that all unique powers would also show up in the D&DI Compendium if they were unique to the mini packs.

The minis wont be any more "necessary" for you than they are now.
Plus, its not like that the powers are going to be super-powered so that if you buy them you can have an "edge" over the rest of your fellow players.

As odd as this feels to me, I'm going to have to agree with this sentiment. I like to think that I'm a fairly laid back DM(or was before I lost all my players to RL), but I would never allow powers that exist only in this form even if they do get added to the compendium. Just one opinion though.*shrugs*

Where's power cards for powers already out? I want my full set of warlock powers and githyanki racial.

So far, unfortunately, the only options available to you are either the ones sold by third party creators--which are uniformly pretty ugly and straightforward with no art or anything (think like the D&D mini statcards without the art) or you have to make them yourself using software like the Magic Set Editor (which is really really good if you've got the time to enter in the info by hand).

Official ones would be better by far. Hope-hope-hope.

I dont think the powers will be powers that arent included in one of the books. So nothing new and special there. And there is an announcement somewhere about the 2009 lineup where they are releasing packs of the powers by class.

They're non-randomized, new powers. Personally I cheer their adoption of non-randomized minis sets. The new powers are a surprise, and I'm skeptical, but I'm not offended by the very idea.

My understanding from the two articles (they put up a 'clarification' one) is tha the powers added will be one per PC mini tied to that mini so non-random and only a handful of new powers.

Also they will be put on the compendium and may appear in print at some point as well.

Nothing game breaking or 'must have' just an added incentive to buy the minis for those sitting on the fence as to the worth of the purchase.

If you subscribe to DDI there's no reason to buy the minis other than for the minis themselves since you'll get access to the powers through the compendium.
