Could the Campaign Setting 2011 be Tekumel?

Just a though, inspired by this.
Could be neat. Fresh and original, but very old school. Win/Win.

No chance. It would basically be Dark Sun with a slightly different flavor. WoTC has shown that they want very discreet campaign settings (ex. no Greyhawk) and this is so close to Dark Sun that most people would have trouble telling the difference.

You do realize that they mentioned a reset for Greyhawk for 4th edition at Gencon 2008?

They also mentioned Dragonlance for 4th at the same meeting.  DL for 4th was also mentioned in the podcast by the Darksun people as well.

If that is the setting I think it is, WotC doesn't have the license to it anyways.

Can you provide a quote or a link to this? I've read a lot from WoTC posts that specifically says those two campaign setting are very low on the priority list. Now maybe things have changed with all of the shakeups at WoTC, but I'd be VERY surprised if they went with either of them for the next campaign setting.

My money is on something nautical and will probably use the Aquala setting that James Wyatt has been working on for a long time.

My reasoning for this prediction?
-  he's the creative manager for all things D&D
-  lots of the ground work has already been done
-  familiarity with 4e ruleset
-  experience writing 4e
-  this setting is very different from all the other campaign settings and provides a nice contrast to Dark Sun
-  fancy graphic that states "Aquela Campaign Settting"  Why go through all the trouble to do that for a one off article?
-  killing off the greenbriar campaign to start up Aquela just before the launch of Dark Sun. The timing is too coincidental. He's running the new campaign as a playtest of ideas.

So there's my prediction. I'd bet money that Aquela is the next 4e campaign setting, not Greyhawk or Dragonlance.

Dragonlance is romantic fantasy with a rich history and cosmology. There are enough iconic foes and locations to make this a viable 4e setting. The Knightly orders, towers of high sorcery, war of the lance, tinker gnomes, etc.

Greyhawk IS D&D to many of us older players. I always considered it to have a far more medieval/darkage Europe feel than the Forgotten Realms. Noble gentry and surfs. Goodly kingdoms barely holding back evil empires. It has a rich diversity of ethnic backgrounds and cultures. The gods are more distant and people are more god-fearing and pious.

As much as I would love either to be the next campaign setting I think you are right about a seafaring, swashbuckling setting. It is the exact opposite of Dark-Sun and in addition to James Wyatt’s Aquala setting you also have Chris Perkins work on his Iomandra setting.

I’m not a big fan of the original Dark Sun setting. That is largely down to my personal taste but it made perfect sense that it was the 3rd setting to get the 4e treatment. I’m indifferent to the idea of a nautical setting… although a Savage Tide style setting could change my mind enough to buy the books and mine them for ideas.

The thing I find most interesting about the Tekumal (Empire of the Petal Throne) setting is the fact that the world was settled and terraformed by a variety of starfaring races some tens of thousands of years before the beginning of the campaign.  Therein exists a unique oppurtunity to mix the current medieval fantasy civilizations with their legacy of ancient technology.  Does anyone know who currently holds the rights to Tekumel?

Although I find the prospect of Tekumul extremely interesting, It would perhaps make more sense for an aquatic setting like Aquella to follow after DS just because it is something of an opposite.  Does anyone know anything of the Aquella setting other than the fact it is nautical based?

This older article about Aquela compares the setting to the DMG's list of D&D world assumptions.

This is the Aquela community group. There's a wiki, that has pages, but I don't know what-all is in it.

I think it might be nice to see the Aquela setting get a campaign guide, but I'm still of the opinion that Dragonlance, Greyhawk, and Mystara could each use one of those saddle-stitched paperback adventure site supplements for an iconic location. They can just be dropped into the PoL setting without upsetting any of the assumptions, and "make sense" (at least, to me) to develop.

Tekumel, in addition to the potential license issues, challenges a lot of the cosmology. From my understanding it's science fiction where people think it's magic and monsters but it's really science and aliens. Maybe, someday, as an expansion to the Gamma World rules? I don't know. I'm probably not qualified to express a worthwhile opinion on the subject.

Note he didn't say they were the next setting nor did he say they weren't low on the priority list.  There's no quote or link because this was stated at a panel that wasn't podcasted or transcripted (except for the Dark Sun one which is likely around somewhere but I don't listen to the podcasts so I dont' have the foggiest where to find it).  Those of us at the panel heard it, but as such they could very well have scrapped such plans.  Or may have put them past the backburner into a vault somewhere in a wall 100 ft away.

Which is a shame.  They really need to do Greyhawk.

Right. As a jungle world terraformed to be habitable to humans, the lush land divided up between vast empires with strong centralized governments, covered in oceans and replete with artifacts of high technology, Tekumel sounds almost exactly like Athas.

Having run a campaign for over a year in Tekumel (using the original rules), I think it would be excellent for D&D to return to this setting. The world is rich in flavor and ripe for adventuring. 4E's wide variety of effects and style of monster building would be a great fit for Tekumel's wide array of strange creatures.

I really like Tekumel because it is mixed-genre.  I believe it can be classified as Sword and Planet?

It is pretty awesome. It's the sort of setting where one minute you're talking your way out of an impalement stake with an irate Imperial bureaucrat, and the next minute you're fighting for your life against a tri-headed marine ankylosaurus. Then you discover an ancient maglev subway which takes you to an abandoned bio-lab of the priests of the evil god of sorcery. Which the priests of the evil god of volcanoes secretly hired you to plunder.

as said, Dark Sun covers it, so why bother?
instead they should release Spelljammer, to give something more unusual

Actually someone did record it and post it as a podcast.  I listened to it and I believe it was on the DL Nexus at one point.  And the Darksun podcast is around here somewhere.  I only listened to it because another poster mentioned that DL was mentioned in it.

Does WotC have the rights to Tekumel? It seems unlikely they would go outside properties they own for a setting, especially with things like the runner up to Eberron in the campaign contest still floating around.

I doubt it very much. I also doubt the PoL will ever take a "setting slot" like darksun, eberron or fr did. The PoL is releasing fractured "setting" books, like the regions of nerath. (or however it's spelled) So as it WILL be it's own setting, it won't be THE 2011 setting. I'll also say that ravenloft, spelljammer and planescape will probably never be their own settings like FR, EB and DS. They're part of the core PoL universe now.

These are the possibles I see.

1. That damn pirate setting.People seem very interested in it and I, myself would be interested in knowing what it could offer the game. Still, it might be interesting, although, I'd only be willing to participate as a player in it and I don't know anyone who loves pirates, so I'd probably never get to play it.

2. Dragonlance the Reboot.I know a lot of people online who want DL in 4e. No question about it, plenty of people hate dragonlance, but enough people love it for it to be profitable. One problem is this, if DL gets the 4e treatment, it will probably get a reboot, eliminating the chaos war and the age of mortals. That is a HUGE amount of material to remove. Simply saying "but you can still use it if you want! Homebrew!!" isn't gonna work for fans of the AoM. We already DO run 4e dragonlance. We don't need anything from wotc to do so. Nothing at all.

4e DL would have to offer something really great and unique for some AoM fans to even consider it. Personally speaking, I won't buy a reboot 4e DL. I have no interest in the war of the lance. My 3x MWP/SP books are perfect for my gaming needs in 4e. My friend would buy it though, because it's dragonlance and he's a hopeless fanboy who will buy anything DL related. So I'd just read his books and talk smack the whole time.

3. Mystara - Birthright. These two settings have been ignored since 2e and both offer unique and interesting concepts for 4th edition. Both have a very loyal fan base and many fans would love to see them finally get some love.

4. Futuristic D&D game. I know some folks would love a starwars/warhammer40k type of D&D game. Complete with space battles, star ships, laser guns and D&D artwork of star dragons, blackhole demons and space elementals. Fans of this idea don't want a goofy "spelljammerish" setting, but a serious setting with an awesome storyline, rich history, amazing art and exciting new gameplay options. I doubt this will ever come to pass, as it wouldn't be easy to incorporate with existing settings. But I'm not alone in believing this "setting" would make a good amount of money for wotc and bring in/ create a completely new fanbase for 4e. Those who love sci-fi. Hell, we already have allabar and other "sci-fi" flavored monsters.

You might say "you can have dungeons or dragons in space", but many would disagree. Abandonded space stations, moons, new worlds, cosmic dragons and more!

[edit] I don't really see in options beyond the first three. The fourth is simply something I know some folks would really love, so I added it.
[edit2] Changed my original post about that damn pirate setting, because that badger has a good point.

I think there alot of DL fans out there that don't care if they reboot as long as the setting gets done and is done right. Will wizards be able to please everyone... No but thats life. As far as ravenloft and spelljammmer they will not see the full setting treatment in 4th due to the fact that they are part of POL now. Mystra and birthright were niche settings back in the day and I can't see wizards putting effort into one of those as it may not be profitable enough for the effort. The other that alot of people want is Greyhawk. I for one would love to see it done as a setting. They could also do a pre-cataclysm DL setting, now that would be cool.

But does DL give itself to 4th ed?  I mean I love DL, my first setting I played in and love the novels, but the way Wizards work now in 4th ed doesn't have the DL feel to it.

I don't think they would reboot DL, but they would add to it.  You would probably see a jump like FR did, exploring a new age in DL to fit with everything.  But if it finally gave me Draconion PC races (espessically the Noble Draconions) then I am all in.

Whilst I don't really have much to say, isn't this....
1. That damn pirate setting.People seem very interested in it and I, myself would be interested in knowing what it could offer the game that eberron doesn't already offer. As far as I'm concerned, eberron already does the whole pirate theme. Lhazaar principalities is heavily flavored with pirates and you can have entire campaigns ( a series of adventures linked by an overarching plotline) focused in, around or originating from Lhazaar.

...Kind of like saying "We don't need Dark Sun because Eberron already has the Mournland"?

No. The athasian desert is nothing like the mournlands. Completely different animals. Although, I see your point completely. A single area, while offering similar possibilities, isn't the same as a fully fleshed out setting, focused around a unique theme. Point made, my good sir.
