I am really looking forward to this series. A Huge Beholder, Balor, 2 Dragons (wish there were more) and a Hydra. This is great news.

  • I hope the dragon is Chromatic Dragon is a Green and the Metallic is not adamantine(of course then I guess he could double as a black).

  • I hope that none of the Huge Miniatures are on some kind of prop like a log or something. I much prefer miniatures solo on their base.

  • Finally I certainly hope the quality is back to what it was with Demonweb. I'd gladly pay more for for better quality.

Does anyone else have any info on this series? Any thoughts?

Check out www.ddmspoilers.com

They have images of the known finished figures up.

Me, I'm still hoping for an Archdevil, and maybe a new Lich. We need a new lich. That old one from Giants of Legend just doesn't work anymore.

FYI-

The DDMspoilers list is not 100% accurate, this came directly from Peter Lee himself. (see here http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?p=18802255#post18802255 post #38)

Although I like some of what I see already, the Balor still looks like a McDonald's toy with more paint steps, and the Frost Titan? Blue ice with whipped cream. I know you guys try your best, but it does beg the question; do you NOT use MM art for some of these??? The Balor's head and sword specifically; what the heck? It looks entirely like a cartoon! I see the 3.0/4.0 art and look at the mini and wonder how you could go from the art to this final result without seeing the gargantuan differences. And the titan...well, I just don't comprehend the decision to use clear light blue plastic. Since when are Frost titans elementals???

I will admit though, I'm liking the adherence to the MM's (regardless of edition) for the rest of the mini's visually spoiled so far.

One thing to remember, those pics are not officially released by WOTC, they may simply be prototypes or other "early stage" figures, until they are previewed on the main page, I wouldn't accept those as a sure thing.

Also Elder Shadow Dragon, for a little cross-promotion with P3.

Well, given greyhaze's past reveals, spoilers of this quality have never changed after official spoilers were revealed. So it's hard to get my hopes up.

True, but the backgrounds seem different than the other previews he's done, from a different source perhaps.

For miniatures, in many cases the art does not exist yet when the miniatures are created. For books, art is one of the last things done; for miniatures, it's the first. There can be a 9 month or year long gap between the art for the miniature is made and the art for the Monster Manual is made.

What about the Balor's 3.5 art? That was probably the most realistic Balor of them all. Couldn't that have been used for the face? The only aesthetic difference is their size, but even then, the 3.5 art looks like a huge Balor, even though it's 3.5 stats said otherwise. The art for that's been out for years, so why not that (at the very least, for the face)?

Thus proving that it really is impossible to please everyone. What I've seen of Legendary evils is the best work I've seen in DDMs since Unhallowed.

The new balor is one of the best huges I've ever seen and if the final release version looks even half as good I will be tremendously happy. There are difference between the MM art and the upcoming mini, so what? It's called interpretation. It's a big dark red demon with wings, a flame whip and a lightning sword; it's unmistakably a balor.

And the titan...well, I just don't comprehend the decision to use clear light blue plastic. Since when are Frost titans elementals???

Since the start of 4E. According to the new fluff, titans were among the first creations of the primordials, and most of them (including the frost variety) have the elemental origin, though exceptions exist (death and eldritch). Considering that the earth titan is visually a walking hillside, I'm not surprised that early concept art depicted the frost titan as being made of living ice.

[Responding to the Balor] - Again, I have qualms with the creatures face. Honestly, yeah, they did an excellent paint job on the thing. But the Balor's face reminds me of a burnt red version of a digimon's. It's just too cartoony, (did I mention it's head is the size of it's chest and it's eyes are somehow bigger than it's visible small teeth?).

[Responding to the Ice Titan] - It still looks like an oversized dwarf done in plain blue and white plastic. Only the clothing has any actual paint detail. My problem is that in all honesty it just looks too much like a PC dwarf done huge in different plastic. There's nothing "Titan" about it. If I was pitting my players vs a Frost Titan and put this on the map, I'd get a few chuckles, at the very least.

Again, I repeat, so far, these are the only two spoilers I have any qualms with. Maybe I'm a perfectionist. Maybe I'm not. But I recall a GoL Frost Giant with fewer paint steps that looked far more like an actual Frost Titan than this one.

Maybe, but most of those "cartoony" features as you put it are necessary for a miniature. Remember these things are designed to look good viewed from half way across a typical table. As such certain details have to be exaggerated or else they would become indiscernible. Also, it's a freek'n demon, why should it obey a human sense of proportion? These things are beings that embody chaos, the fact that it has a humanoid form at all is astounding.

[Responding to the Ice Titan] - It still looks like an oversized dwarf done in plain blue and white plastic. Only the clothing has any actual paint detail. Nothing titan-like about it? It's a huge giant that is very visibly an embodiment of its elemental namesake, how much more titan-like could it get. It certainly looks nothing like a dwarf, maybe some ice equivalent to an azer, but certainly not a dwarf (the sheer scale of the actual figure should dispel any remaining confusion once it is in hand).

Again, I repeat, so far, these are the only two spoilers I have any qualms with. Maybe I'm a perfectionist. Maybe I'm not. But I recall a GoL Frost Giant with fewer paint steps that looked far more like an actual Frost Titan than this one.

Giant's and Titans are not the same thing, very similar but not the same. Titan's are more than just bigger giants, they also have a much more prominent connection to their element (see hill giant and earth titan for the most extreme example). Furthermore, prior to the release of the 4E MM2, none of us, outside of WotC, knew what a frost titan would look like. Turns out they're very much an inversion of the fire titan (white skin vs. black skin and a beard made of ice vs. a beard made of fire). However, as it has been said by the folks of at WotC, art is one of the first steps in making a new mini but one of the last steps in making a new book, as such the frost titan mini is based on an older art concept for the frost titan (and as I said before, given that the earth titan is a walking hillside, the frost titan as walking glacier makes some amount of sense).

Nothing says the official D&D minis need to be used. It is nice to have a visual representation of the monsters we love without having to be creative (it's not a werewolf, it's a gnoll!), but if they are that unappealing, something can be substituted. Also, many companies like One Monk make cardstock minis. Applying their logic, you can always photocopy/print out a pic of what you think a particular mini should look like, slap it on a piece of cardstock/foamcore, and glue it to a base of appropriate size. I have not done this for many, as I try to use minis whenever possible, but being open to this has allowed me to get some truly unique pieces on the table.

I like the balor. The Frost Titan was the only one I had qualms about, and that is because I liked the horns on his helmet in MM2 and I think his beard should be more "icicle" like.

I wonder if we are going to get some skeletons anytime soon. If I remember correctly, the last "normal" skeletons were released back in Angelfire. I'd really like to see some new common ones crop up. Those older ones are tough to get.

Actually the last "normal" skeleton would probably be the Skeletal Legionnaire from War Drums. It's still been far to long since we got a nice basic skeleton, though I hadn't really thought about it until you brought it up. We've had plenty of zombie and zombie-like stand-ins, but the closest we've gotten to more skeletons is the be-robed Skeletal Reaper from Blood War and the RARE Skeletal Tomb Guardian from Dungeons of Dread.

Looking forward to having another dragon, and it will be WONDERFUL not to have to shake the damn box and guess as to whether or not there was a huge dragon inside!!! And the Beholder looks nice too, not sold yet on the Frost Titan or Hydra yet, but I want to know what all the smaller winged creatures are in the box in Peter's preview...

Ah, thanks for catching me on that. I completely forgot about the legionnaire. While I was looking him up, I thought about what other minis we haven't seen in a while. One of the first ones that came to mind was a wererat. Not counting the promo, I believe there were only two, both from sets long since passed. I wonder if we'll see any more of them?

Yeah, I noticed that too, sadly it was when (SPOILER!!!!) I was right in the middle of running Scepter Tower of Spellguard and needed a crapload. Gnolls worked in a pinch, but it would have been nice for a commonly used monster to be made into a more recent common mini.

That is indeed an awesome looking set. The figure all look average-to-wonderful. The only thing I can find to complain about is that apparently both archons are rare, which will make it really hard to assemble reasonable encounter squads.

Nice.

Although I don't see much use for any of those in the near future for me In fact of the monster packs, this is the most useless for me at this stage (not a criticism. Simply a statement. Others I'm sure will use all of them ;)).

I don't think it's even wise for me to continue this, :D . It doesn't seem like any of the posters responding to my issues with the Balor and Frost Titan (as yourself) look at MM art.
I'm not asking for human proportions, I'm asking for proportions consistent with their art; neither 3.5 nor 4.0 balor had a head the size of it's chest, or eye's the size of it's teeth. And regarding the Ice Titan, the new views on it in the spoilers changed my mind a bit. It doesn't look as bad as I first thought. I still think it looks a bit too cartoony though. Which by the way, regarding your cartoony comment, there have been absolutely amazing non-cartoony mini's before, (of even smaller size), so I don't think you could use that argument for any mini.

1) Your use of color & bold is despicable.
2) Maybe your Frost Titans look like that, but mine don't.

1) Isn't there only one color for the boards? So my color shouldn't really bother anyone's reading of my posts (unlike a normal red or a beige would). If otherwise, please explain, I'll change accordingly (I've changed to non-bold for now, as it seems to lose it's uniqueness on boards like these). If it's despicable for other reasons, then your sentiment is lost on me.
2) I was looking at MM art, both 3.5 and 4.0. If your view of the Titans is different from the art, then we probably shouldn't even be having this discussion to begin with, as it would be rather pointless.

Although I'm surprised that there are some that aren't from any book or magazine that I can find. Why would they incliude the

This is 4E, not 3E (art changes). There was no such thing as a frost TITAN in 3E, the finished mini doesn't resemble the finished art because the mini was based on concept art. Like wise, the balor might also have been based on concept art, which might have been more divergent from the old 3E art than what was ultimately used in the 4E:MM.
