| #1joeburgosAug 04, 2010 11:29:00 | I saw a review of this online and I have to say, Im fairly excited. Who else is thinking of picking this up? |
| #2johnsnowAug 04, 2010 11:32:05 | Pre-ordered my copy already from Amazon. And all by itself so it might actually arrive on September 7th. I am also thinking of reserving a second copy at my FLGS. Just so I can have that truly old-school feeling of buying a D&D boxed set at a gaming store. |
| #3MarandahirAug 04, 2010 11:37:05 | I preordered a copy at my friendly local book store, so it should arrive on the 7th. I can't wait to open it up and play it with my Residents (I'll be an RA this year)! |

'Cuz it might be hard to get the jock types to play D&D... ![]() Although I guess college students are generally the guys who were called "nerds" in high school, huh? |
| #5Kaviyd3Aug 04, 2010 13:02:09 | By the way -- does anyone know whether or not _Heroes of the Fallen Lands_ will contain all of the crunch content from the Starter Kit? |
| #6johnsnowAug 04, 2010 13:51:07 | By the way -- does anyone know whether or not _Heroes of the Fallen Lands_ will contain all of the crunch content from the Starter Kit? Character class and character creation wise, while we don't KNOW, it seems HIGHLY likely. I would imagine the non-character creation rules of the game included in the Starter Set are probably spread out between the Dungeon Master's Kit, the Rules Compendium, and the Monster Vault. |
| #7MarandahirAug 05, 2010 22:27:00 | I preordered a copy at my friendly local book store, so it should arrive on the 7th. My college doesn't have any sports teams. We compete in the National Tobogganing Championship. We play Cricket and Soccer on the field, and we go hiking, biking, canoing, kayaking, sailing, swiming, jogging, etc. We're basically in a National Park. We're a hippy school. My dorm is bound to have geeky guys and gals into this sort of thing. It has every year previously, at least. By the way -- does anyone know whether or not _Heroes of the Fallen Lands_ will contain all of the crunch content from the Starter Kit? Actually, I doubt it. Red Box does Character Creation through an initial Goblin-attack encounter. I think Heroes of the Fallen Lands will have just a regular character creation page. |

Sounds like a cool college. I'm kinda jealous (although it's been YEARS since I was a student...). I know that you can build a character through the adventure, but I suspect there might be ordinary character creation rules as well. Although even if they don't, and the format's totally different, the rules are technically duplicative. I don't really think that's a bad thing, but I just thought that, for completeness, I should point it out. The Starter Set supposedly supports characters for a couple (or three? seems to still be speculative...) levels. So clearly it's got something more than just what's in the intro adventure. From the TRS preview, it seemed like the solo adventure in all its glory took up, what, 8-10 pages? Since according to the product catalog, the Player's Book is 32(!) pages, that still leaves enough room for basic character creation and adventuring guidelines, class and race descriptions, and equipment lists. I'm not saying that standard character creation rules will be there, just that they could be. I mean, you only need one ability chart... |
| #9MarandahirAug 05, 2010 23:32:49 | That video of the Red Box made it seem like depending on your class, your ability scores were already chosen for you, and evething is made out just so that it's easy for you to get rearing to go. I don't think the Starter Set will have standard character creation rules in it, but it MIGHT. |

I don't think the Starter Set will have standard character creation rules in it, but it MIGHT. Fair. But that was also the starter/intro adventure. I freely grant it might be the only way to create a character in the Starter Set, but it doesn't have to be. The only ability we had an example of in the video was a rogue's dex score. And, come on, the default array is: 16, 14, 13, 12, 11, 10. Which means that like 90% of people who can get a stat boost (in the case of Dex: humans, elves and halflings) will choose to get an 18 in their class's primary stat. So they pre-choose that, which is hardly surprising. |
| #11stug3Aug 09, 2010 12:15:48 | I already have and play it, it called 1st edition D&D and yes it is far superior to 4e. |
| #12melloredAug 09, 2010 12:30:24 | Not for me, and all my friends have already either tried it, or are playing it, so i don't have anyone to buy it for. Still, i'm glad they made it. |
| #13WhiteHarnessAug 09, 2010 13:26:29 | There is a large part of me that thinks this as well. In some ways, I wish there had never been a 2nd Edition. Instead, maybe it would have been better to have simply done a re-organization of AD&D 1E, fixing some of the worst of the abusive rules and then we'd never have had to experience the dreadful mutilations of an awesome game that were perpetrated by 2dn and 3rd Editions. However, I have high hopes for 4E Essentials. I love its Classic "feel," and I do love that Fighters don't suck anymore. I confess that I miss the variety of armour types and the greater degree of verisimilitude that was present in good old 1st Edition, though... I already have and play it, it called 1st edition D&D and yes it is far superior to 4e. |
| #14johnsnowAug 09, 2010 16:32:59 | I already have and play it, it called 1st edition D&D and yes it is far superior to 4e. Unless you're a fighter. I loved 1e back in the day, but from a game balance standpoint, it's almost laughable. |
