My friend and I were discussing how the gaps between editions was shortening. The gap from 1st to 2nd edition was 15 years, 2nd to 3rd was 11 years, 3rd to 4th was 8 years, and 4th to 5th, 6 years. We then realized that we could extrapolate this pattern to predict when all future editions of D&D would hit!
Unfortunately, things get a little dark...
6th edition will hit shelves some time in 2018
7th edition will be available in 2021
8th in 2023
But at the rate the gaps between editions keep decreasing...
On July 14, 2030, 24th edition will come out. It is the first edition to come out less than a week after its predecessor (23rd edition, released July 8th)
On July 31, 2030, 32nd edition comes out, less than a day after 31st edition.
Later that day 33rd and 34th edition are released.
67th edition is the first to come out less than a second after its predecessor. But that is only moments before the end....
D&D singularity occurs on August 1, 2030. On that day infinite editions of D&D come out.
...
So, I guess this means we only have 15 and a half years before D&D destroys the universe.

Bravo! I had a pretty good laugh while reading this. Not to discourage your prognostication but I hope they stick with this edition for a while.
one thing to keep in mind is that 4th edition proably had a life span much shorter then intended due to the relitive unpopularity of the system.
I guess this means that they'll finally sort out the digital and pdf issues. I mean, there's no way to print and ship physical books as fast as they will have to in the future, so they must be releasing stuff online and/or directly to pdf. That's cool.

Well, I just checked the numbers for cancelled editions, those are accurate. I foun the equation for the curve, which you did correct. And I plugged 23, 24, 31, 32, 33, 34 and 67 into the equation, and you were correct.
I just can't wait to be ki - I mean, I just can't wait 'till the singularity!

And yes, doing the math - often the unecessarily overanalytical math - is always a fun excercise. It started whem my friend jokingly predicted D&D Singularity, and I HAD to determine when it would _really_ happen. ;)
Oh and Timpookie.... That was impressive. It's one level of nerdom to mathematically predict D&D Singularity. It's another to peer review said calculations. Hats off to you sir! ;)
