Dark Sun race speculation after the MM news

So I was thinking, if they have squeezed the players guide and campaign guide into one and given us a monstrous manual for DS, does this mean we may get some simple race writeups in the monster entries.

I think it's been established that Thri-Kreen and Mul will be added to the campaign setting, who knows about the likes of the half-giant (though I feel like the Eberron mention and this geeksdreamgirl.com/2009/11/10/primal-pow... seem to suggest our hopes need not yet be dashed)

So if we get a few race write-ups in the monstrous manual what does everyone think they might be. Some obvious ideas would be Pterran or Ssurran, or Aaracocra. Aaracocra seem tricky as a monstrous race write-up simply because they entail a feat progression to deal with their wings which is usually reserved for more fully fleshed out races. Any other ideas? Maybe New Race mutants from the pristine tower? Anyone think there will be a conversion of githzerai or githyanki to plain old gith?

Speculate away!

Lets, see. I'll go with 16 optional monster racial choices like in mm1. (although I highly doubt we will get that many, if any)

1. Hej-kin
2. Pterran
3. Pyreen (high doubtful)
4. Silt Runner
5. Tohr-Kreen
6. Villichi
7. Gith
8. Belgoi
9. Reggelid
10. Dray
11. Feylaar (possible)
12. Nikaal
13. Zathosi or Kaltori (possible)
14. Slig
15. Ssurran
16. Tarek

Other possibles!
17. Tari
18. Trin
19. Athasian lizardman (highly doubtful)

Races I doubt they will give us options for.
1. Half giants. (due to size)
2. Aaracokra (cause they fly but still possible since they were in the revised edition)

I see psionic/pristine mutations as either a template (probably) or a few select monsters. I'd also bet on seeing some new athasian monsters.

[edit] I bet wotc will snag some of the athas.org stuff too. They'd be silly not to.

2E source material ...

Original "Rules Book" Playable Races:
Dwarf
Elf
Half-Elf
Half-Giant
Halfling
Human
Mul
Thri-Kreen

Revised Setting (Age of Heroes) Additions:

Aarakocra
Pterrans

All of the aforementioned races (except Pterrans) were listed in the most recent official DS Monstrous Compendium - Appendix II. printed in 1995:

Tohr-Kreen (J'ez, J'hol, T'keech & Tondi) and the Thri-Trin are cousins to the Thri-Kreen ... all are large, intelligent mantids.  Only Thri-Kreen are common outside of the Hinterlands though.

Dray (Dragonborn) were creations of the undead dragon-king, Dregoth.  Made by "transforming humans into draconic humanoids".   As such, they are limited to certain regions centering around Kragmorta (1st generation, deemed failures) and New Giustenal (2nd Generation, "near replicas of the dragon king").  Both speak only the language of ancient Giustenal.

Tari are small ratmen.  Sometimes hunted as pests, Tari are found either in the sewers of city-states or leading a nomadic life of scavenging.  They were the only rebirth-race to abundantly survive extinction yet not classified as a playable race.

Ssurran are not Lizard Men.  They are "nomadic, humanoid reptiles".  ...

Kobolds, Ogres, Trolls, Orcs, Gnomes, Wemic, Lizard Men, Pixies and Goblins were all supposedly wiped out during the Cleansing Wars.

According to legend, there is a lone Troll surviving in a swamp, in a chasm in the center of the Glowing Desert.

I thought I remember there being a whole community of trolls at the bottom of a chasm up north?

Don't forget, the lizardmen were not wiped out. Those of the last sea were protected by the mindlords.

The Dray have already been confirmed to be Dragonborn, who will get an "Other Races" write-up in the main book.

What I'm wondering is if they'll keep the Half-Elf/Half-Halfling race from that one novel series.

You mean Sorak from the Tribe of One series.  Since elves are so tall on Athas, and halflings just as short, he was aproximately of human height.  However, since halflings and elves don't get along on Athas (for the most part), his story was exceptional in that regard alone.

Then again, if they reprint those four novels ... Elfling should be a DDI supplement, atleast.

As far as the DS material and novels go, Sorak was unique in that he was the only elfling. Atleast from a character/npc stand point. Sorak had plenty of pc clones, I'm sure.
