*raises hand* Shaman hasn't been confirmed as appearing PHBII yet.:P

Also do you have a link for the source? I'm going to look around to see if I can find it, but having a link would make things easier.

-=Edit: Fount it. It is kind of underwhelming. He just happened to read it. I guess I'll just have to wait for somebody else to get it and post the entire text on ENWorld or something. *sigh*

"Confirmed" is such a picky word... We both know that the Shaman's gonna be there, bro. :P

And yeah, it is kinda underwhelming. Call me a sensationalist. Suffice to say, when a confirmation of this confirmation rolls around, it'll be real news.

:P I know, but I plan to someday be a lawyer, so I have to start getting used to doing things like that.

And honestly at this point, I've gotten sort of tired of guessing at PHBII stuff. We basically know what everything is going to be(with the exception of the Druid because people can't agree on that one), so at this point it is just waiting on the 7th and 8th place horses to cross the finish line when everyone else has finished and they are only half way done with the track.

You can't be a lawyer! ...I don't know why not, of course, but I can't imagine why, of all things, that's what you'd wanna be, Ranadiel.

(I'm just joshin' you here, dude. I wish you the best! )

(Stick with it, bro. You're a respected forum-goer now, thanks to your efforts! )

:P Read my post again, I said PHBII stuff. I'm not tired of guessing in general. I just want to move on to whatever comes next, but that isn't going to happen until we get the roles of the Druid and the Warden and even then we'll probably have to wait a while.

Ahh, that makes sense.

Man, I must really be off the ball today.
Arcane
- Bard (Leader);
- Sorcerer (Controller);

Primal
- Barbarian (Striker);
- Druid (Speculated Controller);
- Shaman (Leader);
- Warden (Speculated Defender).
As expected. I don't think anybody will be surprised by this.
Divine
- Avenger (Speculated Striker);
- Invoker (Speculated Controller);
Now this is a surprise, and if true, an interesting choice for the names.

A Divine Invoker as a controller? Yeah, I could get used to hearing that. But with Invocation as the term given to Primal Powers it could be a wee bit confussing.

The Avenger makes a return from 0ed. as a class name. Do you suppose --what's the phrase? Oh, yeah-- Do you suppose that the Avenger has mugged the Blackguard and taken his stuff?

The Avenger was also a class in the 2nd Ed Ravenloft Domains of Dread hard cover.

Primal power are Evocations not invocations.....doesn't change the fact that everyone will be confused by it. *sigh*

The old school of magic being called invocation/evocation doesn't help either.

While I admit it's fine for Druids, Barbarian powers being called Evocations is still a bizarre one for me, still getting used to it.

dictionary.com:
Invoke
–verb (used with object), -voked, -vok⋅ing.
1. to call for with earnest desire; make supplication or pray for: to invoke God's mercy.
2. to call on (a deity, Muse, etc.), as in prayer or supplication.
3. to declare to be binding or in effect: to invoke the law; to invoke a veto.
4. to appeal to, as for confirmation.
5. to petition or call on for help or aid.
6. to call forth or upon (a spirit) by incantation.
7. to cause, call forth, or bring about.

Evoke
–verb (used with object), e⋅voked, e⋅vok⋅ing.
1. to call up or produce (memories, feelings, etc.): to evoke a memory.
2. to elicit or draw forth: His comment evoked protests from the shocked listeners.
3. to call up; cause to appear; summon: to evoke a spirit from the dead.
4. to produce or suggest through artistry and imagination a vivid impression of reality: a short passage that manages to evoke the smells, colors, sounds, and shapes of that metropolis.

Yeah, the differnces really seem kinda subtle, though invoke seems to have definite "calling on divinity/higher authroity" implications missing in evoke. Its the sort of confusion that won't last long though, people will sort it out in quickly enough. Its unfortunate that they're so similar, but i think WoTC has faith we can handle it. Lets not let them down! ;)

In western magical tradition, there is a big difference in regards to Invoking versus Evoking. Basically Invocations come from within, such as drawing divine/cosmic/natural/demonic/etc power into the body using it as a conduit to manifest power, and an Evocation is bringing in divine/cosmic/natural/demonic/etc power outside of oneself via a magical apparatus (such as a circle or object) or by sheer willpower.

In-: into; e-: out of.
Invoke: to call something into (the situation). Evoke: to call something to come out (of where it's lying dormant).

I think Warden and Warlord and Warlock are much more likely to cause confusions then what a power class calls its powers. I've played a few games now and I've never heard anyone say they're going to do an "exploit", instead they just say the name. Even I don't say I'm going to cast a spell, I say I'm going to cast Magic Missile.

Could be. OTOH, people tend to remember what class they're playing, if not what others are. Not to mention that it's really easy to find yourself in a situation where you think, "Invokers' powers are called Evocations, right? Yeah, that makes sense," especially if you don't know any better.

In western magical tradition

But this is largely because Crowley wasn't an etymologist. The two terms really ought to be used the other way around. To 'invoke' is to 'call in' the power of a higher authority from outside (i.e. the usual monotheist concept of the Creator existing outside His creation). To 'evoke' is to 'call forth' power from within oneself or from within the world (i.e. the concept of an immanent deity more common in pantheist religions such as Hinduism).

'Invoke = divine' and 'evoke = primal' makes perfect sense if you consider the origins of each word rather than Crowley's hamfisted attempts to make them fit his personal view of magic.

Indeed, I have no problems with Invoker/Evocation. It's quite different and it really doesn't matter if people mix it up gameplay wise. I tend to just say powers in general.

I'm happy with the classes "confirmed" for the book, it's on my buy list even more now. March can't come soon enough, I needs to play me some Druid. Call Lightning for the WIN!

Being Divine, not Primal, an Invoker's powers will be called Prayers.

See, the confusion has begun already. ;)
