Even if the book is still six months away, and we don't know much about the Invoker or Avenger as of yet, what sorts of things would you like to see in the Divine Power book?

Here's some ideas:

Cleric: Nature Cleric (CHA/WIS) and Death Cleric (CHA/STR) builds for some extra variety in clerical abilities. These would include some lightning/storm-flavored powers for the nature cleric and some necrotic/cold powers for the evil or Raven Queen-worshipping cleric.

Paladin: Mounted Cavalier build. Since they brought back the ranger's animal companion, it shouldn't be too much of a stretch to give the paladin a special mount build again. The main issue comes with the fact that the mount can't be brought into every dungeon. This might be solved by giving the mount the ability to turn into some kind of 'angelic companion' when the paladin is on foot, and/or rendering the mounted powers usable on foot as 'charge' abilities that grant extra effects when the paladin is mounted. If they include a second build for the paladin, they might make an "Anti-Paladin" or "Blackguard" build for evil paladins.

More channel divinity feats/powers, including some for the evil deities (unless those are being reserved for a "Vile Darkness"-style evil player's handbook).

Some sort of extra bonus for choosing a specific deity, such as adding extra skills to the trained skill list if the divine class worships a certain god (such as Athletics for a follower of Kord or Nature for a follower of Melora).

Of course, there will probably be a load of new paragon paths and epic destinies available. Preferably, some of the paragon paths should be based on choice of deity rather than race (with the option of reflavoring for a similar deity in another campaign setting, if applicable).

So, what do you think should be in Divine Power?

More than anything else, I think we need more official support for differentiating Divine characters of different deities, beyond just the one Channel Divinity feat per deity. Damage types are a start; as ubiquitous as Radiant damage is, most deities have a damage type that seems naturally associated with them. For example:
  • Asmodeus: Fire;
  • Ioun: Psychic;
  • Kord: Thunder, as well as Lightning;
  • Lolth: Poison;
  • Pelor: Radiant (obviously);
  • Raven Queen: Necrotic, as well as Cold;
  • Vecna: Necrotic, and possibly Psychic;
  • Zehir: Poison;
Obviously, several other deities don't really lend themselves to a particular damage type, nor do I think any Divine character should be limited to a single specific damage type on the basis of his or her deity. Like I said, though, damage type is just a start.

In general, evil Divine characters don't have the same breadth of options that good Divine characters do. This is understandable to a point, but they could definitely use some support as well.

Finally, the Eberron fan in me wants to see more ranged-weapon powers for Clerics (of the Silver Flame). Obviously, Longbows are out of the question for Paladins, and they're probably not gonna work for Invokers either, but Clerics could definitely handle a ranged-weapon-based build. (Avengers are totally unknown in this respect, for the moment.)

Right! All of those, too.

I wonder how they'll accomplish domains? And mounts that don't suck?

Current theory that I've seen for domains is something akin to the weapon mastery paths from the Dragon Gladiator article.

And I got no idea on mounts. Honestly I don't think they are going to make it, as one developer a month or so ago basically said that they would reintroduce mounts if they could come up with a good way to do it. That implies that they didn't have one yet, and I think it might be too late in the development cycle to add an entirely new build.

I think a mount idea is fine provided it is a kind of "celestial" mount thing which the paladin can summon or dismiss with a short ritual. That way you could summon your mount to a dungeon if it is worthwhile, or dismiss it when you can't use it anymore. An ordinary horse or whatever won't work. Aside from that, I would like to see a new strength based power for each level - and two for level 9 please - for which there are NO str powers at all - ridiculous.... and also two new cool at-wills, one for str, one for cha. Also a feat that adds to insight, based on an old school "detect evil" fluff.

A lot of this will be geared toward Paladins, who are the most incomplete active class in the game right now:

- A "Charismatic Blademaster" feat.

- Better utility powers, especially at Lv. 2. Some at-will utilities, especially, and more encounter ones as well. Auras could make a huge comeback (and upgrade) in the form of such utility powers.

- Feats that add more to Divine Challenge. Like status effects when it triggers, extra triggering events besides an attack (such as shifting or teleporting), extra times per round that it can trigger, and so forth. Or maybe even add additional damage-type keywords.

- A LOT more STR-based powers in general. And a helluva lot more in the Heroic and Paragon Tiers that attack Reflex and Will (probably leaning toward crippling status effects).

- Not that CHA-based powers don't need some holes filled, either. They could use more status effects in the Heroic and Paragon Tiers, and better healing and buffs in the Paragon and Epic Tiers.

- More at-wills of both STR and CHA varieties so Human Paladins feel special.

- Radiant CHA at-wills. Also some ranged or burst implement-based at-wills for Paladins.

- Feats that eliminate the need for Paladins to boost anything besides either STR or CHA, and then WIS. Something that allows them to crit on a 19-20 against an enemy marked by them, for example, in Paragon or Epic Tier.

- Minor-action and immediate-action attack powers. Also powers that combine weapon and implement attacks almost as if the implement were an off-hand weapon for a Ranger or Tempest Fighter. As the Paladin is the Divine class that is apparently the most expected to have both a weapon and an implement, it makes sense to have powers that make them work in tandem.

- (P.S. Personally I couldn't give a toss about the mounts, although I realize they'll be in. Hopefully it's not any more than 5% of the new Paladin material.)

Clerics could use:

- Epic Tier STR powers that aren't epic fail (and that actually, uh, apply to the Leader role).

- More diversity in the flavor of new powers (thus allowing one to easily make a nature Cleric, or a fire Cleric, etc.)

- More at-wills of both STR and WIS varieties (again, so Human Clerics feel special).

Don't know about the PHB2 classes yet.

What I would like to see is some basic Channel Divinity powers that the paladin and cleric can choose from instead of the two basic ones they have. For instance, changing Divine Strength for Divine Vigor (If attack hits, +STR-modiifer additional hit points for the paladin). Divine Guidance ( 1+1/2xSTR modifier bonus to attack bonus for next attack), Divine Recovery (Minor Action, Spend your move action and spend a healing surge to heal yourself your surge value. You do not gain bonuses to your defense, like second wind), etc. etc. etc.

I could see domains coming back in the form of feats that grant extra bonuses to a divine class to further specialize it toward its domain. Here's a quick example of how it could work:

Priest of War
Heroic Tier
Prerequisite: Divine power source, follower of Bahamut, Kord, Moradin, Bane, or Grummsh.
Benefit: You gain Athletics as a trained skill. You gain proficiency and a +2 feat bonus to damage rolls with your deity's favored weapon type.
Special: Domain feat (may only take one domain feat)

Favored Weapons:
Bahamut - Axes
Kord - Heavy Blades
Moradin - Hammers
Bane - Maces
Grummsh - Spears

Other feats may change the damage type of certain powers, or boost powers of certain types (for instance, Priest of Storms could cause all powers with the radiant keyword to deal lightning damage instead).

Current theory that I've seen for domains is something akin to the weapon mastery paths from the Dragon Gladiator article.

I like that! Those were some sweet mechanics, and I can't wait to see them used more often!

Personally, one aspect of domains (previous editions) that I kind of hope they dump is the "domain list" for each deity. I found that in lots of cases, these lists were quite arbitrary, especially when followers of a given deity often focus upon entirely different aspects of their god, possibly even to the point of contradicting each other.

The Silver Flame (a religion in Eberron) didn't grant its Clerics the Fire domain. Boccob, the God of Knowledge, didn't grant the War domain to Clerics who worshiped him for the study of tactics. (And it seemed like Boccob was just about the only god without access to the War domain, too. :P)

My point is, I would much prefer the official relationship between deity and domain to be one of suggestions rather than solid restrictions.

I wouldn't count on that since the first indication that domains were returning was a mention that there would be a conversion table or something for dealing with domains in regards to FR dieties. If domain lists of some kind didn't exist, then that would kind of be a silly thing to make.:P

One thing I'd like to see is some of the RP aspects of the RP aspects of different deities return to the game. In 1st and 2nd edition, there were books which told you, in addition to their holy symbol, the cleric's holy days, their raiment (religious garb), what kind of offering is made to this god, etc. I realize some put this in the realm of "fluff" but I felt it kind of added something.

As well, the mechanical stats for each deity/avatar would be nice, too.

While I'd love to see all of that, it's the kind of stuff that belongs in a 4th edition version of deities and demi-gods or a related Dragon magazine article series. The power books are all about crunchy mechanical options. If Martial Power is to be taken as any example then fluff, especially setting specific fluff, should be near ZERO.

Just how would 4E handle domains? I'm fine with a Paladin Warhorse build if he gave up something to get that magical horse on the battle field.

What we despriately need is more Channel Divinity Feats but not tied to any one god, but rather a god archtype. So I can build my custom Gods, etc.

My guess, see Weapon Mastery Feats, Dragon 368. To summarize for non-subscribers; counts as multi-classing, grants unique ability related to specialty, and includes one of each swappable power type (encounter, utility, daily), that scale with your level.

Technically they already kind of are. Just resign the channel divinity feats as appropriate to you personal setting. I will however agree that it might have been nice if channel divinity feats used a deities portfolio/domains as requisites instead their name.

Some ideas for Divine Power, now that PHB2 is out:

- Cavalier build for Paladins focusing on charging attacks, allowing the use of a divine mount to create a mounted paladin.
- Divine Mounts (see above)
- Builds for wildly different types of Cleric (Nature Cleric, Trickster Cleric, Death Cleric)
- Ranged Avenger build specializing in crossbows
- Unarmed Avenger build (Sacred Fist/Godhand)
- New Invoker Covenants (a Covenant of Learning which grants bonuses to attacks or saving throws after using a power, for instance)
- Domain feats for differentiating divine characters who worship different gods.
- Options for evil clerics/divine classes (channel divinity powers for evil gods).
- New paragon paths/epic destinies (Risen Martyr?)
- New deities (maybe).

Looks like Domains aren't multiclassing feats - they're actually quite simple and quite awesome. They're a set of two feats, actually, quite similar to the Fighting Styles in the Playtest of Martial Power 2: a Domain Feat, which you can take one for each of the three domains of the deity you worship (or philosophy, if you worship that, freeing you from the constraints), and they pump up at-wills. You can only benefit from one at a time. Then there's Domain Divinity Feats, which require you to worship that domain/a deity with that domain, and give you a Channel Divinity power. Of course, you can still only use one Channel Divinity per encounter.

I'm heavily looking forward to July's Divine Power. After the awesomeness of Arcane Power, I have high hopes for their religious equivalents.

Yes, I'd like them to write more about Divine Characters and alignment. Because as written, it's very confusing. Invokers are both encouraged to worship the entire pantheon, and then are told they can only be of the alignment of their chosen deity. This does not make sense.

Chewbacca is Wookie...

Alignment and Divine Characters seems to be hand-waved as fluff - you worship the deity your alignment fits too, rather than the other way around as stated. There's no penalty for changing your alignment, but that leaves you wondering what the alignment restriction was about to begin with. Does it mean that my now Evil Paladin cannot worship Bahamut anymore, and has to worship Tiamat or Bane or Asmodeus or some such?

It's not explained. Hopefully this will be worked out in Divine Power, especially with more Divinity Feats keying into Deities as well as more general Domains (lookie... it's where the rest of Deities & Demigods went!!!).

More Healing powers for Paladins.

A cloth wearing healing class.

I'd love to see that. Take a lazer cleric, give him Wis-to-AC when in cloth, add 5 squares to the at-wills and heals, and you basically have it. Add staffs as a implement if you want even more flavor. I think the cloth caster fits the healer archetype better than the chainmail cleric.

I want to see paladin mounts built like ranger animal companions or familiars.

IMO the Invoker fluff is not very well written. The way I see Invokers alignment working is based on how they connect to the gods; They say you must have the alignment of your chosen diety, but that does not mean you have to choose a diety. Some Invokers choose one diety as someone to model themselves after thus the need for that god's alignment, and on the other hand some Invokers don't attach themselves to just *one* god allowing them to find their own path.

Clerics, Avengers and Paladins adore and serve the gods while Invokers amire and imitate the gods, one example of an Invoker that does not ador or serve any gods is the Ur-Preist who steals divine power from the gods and their disciples

Still need to get my hands on Arcane Power, but from what I've seen and heard of that one so far I am excited for Divine Power as well. I'm thinking...:
  • Guidelines for swapping the basic radiant damage out is a cool suggestion. It might take a feat for some damage types, depending on how they relate to the game at large. In other words, I'm not sure that all damage types are considered equal.
  • PPs for specific deities definitely. Of course, this will flesh out the core/example deities so just a few samplings might suffice.
  • Perhaps character backgrounds focused on deities could be offered. That might cover an Athletics bonus for worshipers of Kord, a Nature bonus for worshipers of Melora, etc. On the other hand, this may be redundant.
  • Some more strands of fluff on the core deities would be interesting. Again, though, in keeping with the style so far, less may be more. Exhaustively spelled out dogmas, rites, etc.--while beloved and useful and interesting, believe you me--might be beyond the scope of the book. Plus, as mentioned, the Power books seem to focus on crunch anyway. I'm sure they'll be able to work some tasty info into the current format.
  • Additional builds will no doubt be offered. However, I'm not so sure this is the right place for differentiating between followers of different deities (nature priests, thief priests, etc.). I think builds have more of a basic mechanical impact and focus on individual character tactics and style. A horsey/mounty paladin and a Charisma-emphasis cleric might show up as builds.
  • Maybe some examples of ethos or philosophy divine characters.
  • Prophecy.

Hm. Just some thoughts for now. The domains preview looks interesting. I need to reread it and think about the domains not sampled therein. Looking forward to Divine Power!

Edit:
More powers for avengers which nova or create zones of badstuff so enemies want to leave you.

This too. I thought more choices to hedge out enemies might be needed for that build when I first read through the class. I haven't actually played one yet though.

Am I the only one that dreads the thought of more mechanical benefits being tied to deity choice (beyond the feats and items so far)? Just put the stuff out there unrestricted so we can pick whatever best fits out concept- otherwise it'll just be legions of Tempus worshippers or whatever comes out that's worse.

For me?

Paladin mounts (but I'd like to see some additional stuff for mounted combat in general, some booster feats or special tricks for PC-and-mount combinations, not necessarily in Divine Power).

More Summoning! And ways to boost the summoned critters.

A divine version of Familiars - Guardian Angels? With the definition of 'familiar' as a paricular form of 'spirit,' the door is wide open...

Deity-(or domain-)specific item powers. I know they don't have items in the 'Power' series, but some way of making a Holy Symbol of Bahamut different from a Holy Symbol of Ioun?

Why would people want paladin mounts so much? I thought it was a good thing that they were dropped in 4e. Horses simply are not practical in a dungeon environment. When I asked about a mounted paladin in 4e, it was reccomended that I play a halfling or some other small race, since the smaller mounts fit better in dungeon environments. I don't wanna be a little guy paladin. Mounts just shoved paladins into the "mounted warrior" corner. While I like the Rider of Rohan archetype, I don't want to be shoehorned into it.

The way I'd make a Paladin's holy mount would be to have that creature be a type of divine creature you bonded with, and just like a familiar it has a constant benefit it grants you(with choices of multiple ones, maybe tied to alignement or deity?) and by spending an action you can turn materialize into a simple mount. You start off with like a Horse with a simple charge or some other similar beasts but you can later get Utility Powers that add new abilities for your divine companion. Each of those power would have one ability for when the divine spirit acts as your mount and one for when it doesn't.

That way the divine spirit would always be useful in either mode but it would be to your best advantage to use it as a mount. You just don't always have to go look for the space to call it.

I think mounts for Paladins and other classes would be fine as long as it's in a dragon article or something and not taking up space in a book, because those kind of characters only work in certain types of campaigns.

I would like to see more Paly stuff based on self sacrifice.

I'm a big fan of clerics (and maybe other divine classes) being able to pick a damage type to replace radiant.

I don't know about crossbow Avengers, I don't think that fits with how the class functions. Though I would be happy if AV2 has A crossbow that can be used as an Avenger Implement, for that vampire slayer/witchhunter feel we all want. Bow Cleric would be in the same boat for me as crossbow Avenger, it could be done with an Item

A light blade or off hand Avenger would be very very awesome, for the Avenger who prefers a more subtle approach.

What sort of Divine Ritual space do they still have to develop?

I don't know about crossbow Avengers, I don't think that fits with how the class functions. Though I would be happy if AV2 has A crossbow that can be used as an Avenger Implement, for that vampire slayer/witchhunter feel we all want. Bow Cleric would be in the same boat for me as crossbow Avenger, it could be done with an Item

A light blade or off hand Avenger would be very very awesome, for the Avenger who prefers a more subtle approach.

I kind of agree that crossbow Avengers might be a bit off...but a heavy-thrown-weapon Avenger could feel just fine. Some other classes can use heavy thrown weapons to advantage, but none really shines with it yet.

Oh god I can see it now. They'll have a radiant specialist PP for the Cleric. Super Lazer Pew Pew will be everywhere. *snickers* Ah well, I'm really looking forward to the book anyway.

the thing that would be great with a bow cleric would be the ability to increase your range to lead from safety. I'd like to see how different it could be to a bow wielding bard.

Favored Weapons:
Bahamut - Axes
Kord - Heavy Blades
Moradin - Hammers
Bane - Maces
Grummsh - Spears

I like the idea of Favoured weapons, but they can be feat based

for example. perhaps something along the lines of

Heroic Tier

Blade of Corellon
Prerequisite: Human, Elf, Half Elf or Eladrin; Must Worship Corellon; Channel Divinity Class Feature

Gain poficiency with Longsword and +2 feat bonus to damage when using a Longsword
A Longsword can be used as an implement for Divine Powers

Interesting idea. Does it need to be specific to Corellon, though? Couldn't you just gain proficiency and bonus damage with your deity's favored weapon no matter which deity that is?....prereq being having that particular deity as your patron?

Or are you thinking there should be a different benefit for each deity's favored weapon?

I think a different benefit would be cool. It would still have to be somewhat minor since it'll essentially be a Divine class only weapon proficiency feat...maybe have its bonus trigger when you Channel Divinity? Like 'Until the end of your next turn your attack with hammer gain a +2 bonus to damage rolles' or 'You can score a critical hit with axes on a 19' etc. Something that is both useful and flavorful.

Deity-(or domain-)specific item powers. I know they don't have items in the 'Power' series, but some way of making a Holy Symbol of Bahamut different from a Holy Symbol of Ioun?

You mean exactly like the ones in AV? :P

Which I don't particularly like, BTW, since they're wildly unbalanced against each other...

You miss my point: if instead all the challenge divinity feats were things like "Divine rage"- for what is currently RRoT or "Divine Offering" for Raven Queen's blessing, where they had all the same effects but didn't mandate a deity, than power gamers could choose their deity based on story and character instead of what has the best powers.

The difference between deity followers in my opinion should be their goals and mannerisms, leaving the mechanical variations (feats, special weapons) to be mixed appropriately to fit your theme.

No mount focused Paladin please, maybe a PP that works with mounts, but not a build option.

Bow Avengers and Clerics please.

Evil options for all existing Divine classes would be nice to.

Proper alternate build features for Clerics and Paladins, rather than having two ability scores for powers, a class feature like an Invoker's Covenant where you select one of the two options to gain various benefits.

More decent Cleric and Paladin powers.

More Religion rituals of all levels.

Please please please nothing to do with alignment or specific gods, or mounted Paladins (although I'd like to see Paladins get a guardian spirit similar to a familiar, as was presented in the old Dungeonscape book).

The Cleric and the Paladin are in a bit of a pickle... I mean they are the only class in the entire game without a choice of class feature! Were they like the first classes designed or something? Plus they suffer from MAD syndrome, what with both having two possible main attack stat.

I hope Divine Power help fixes them and make them feel more in line the other classes.

I agree but I think most players who have Battle Clerics (STR) don't want anything changed to the class. Personally I think it should have been handled like the Invoker - WIS as main stat while CHR & STR as secondary stats.

I would love to see more detailed writeups on the Core deities but they might hold out for Dragon articles for those.

I would also like to see the return of Favored Weapons.

I would also like to see stats for Holy/Unholy Water.

I am hoping to also see an At-Will Invoker power that targets WILL and an At-Will Invoker Thunder power. I would also like to see some more Invoker summoning powers.

Divine Power is the book I have been waiting the most for.

I don't think they need a fix, just more powers so if you go one way or the other you have more options.

I'm sure both cleric and paladin will get a couple of builds, much like the fighter did in Martial Power. It will be interesting to see what class features those builds have to give up.

I'm super pumped about this book coming out - especially given how awesome the Martial and Arcane Power books have been.

Well I'm hoping we get alternate basic Channel Divinity.

The Cleric I can see giving up Ritual Caster, its the only thing that can be taken out easily. Healing Word and Healer's Lore are just too important to the class' identity.

For the Paladin the only thing is Lay on Hands and even there... I mean its not like they can give up on their Divine Challenge!

unless its a new kind of Divine Challenge like the Swordmage gets different Aegis...

An avenger at-will that could be used on a charge! Maybe geared specifically towards the pursuit avenger?
It would make perfect sense given the fact that the only two pursuit avenger feats are for charging and two out of four paragon paths do something with charging...

(it would help also be great for my feycharging character, but that's not really an argument of course )

A few thoughts.:

- Paladin mounts should be handled a la familiars in Arcane Power. No more, no less.

- The Paladin might get extra marking mechanic options besides Divine Challenge. Such as an option that is better geared toward Straladins, since we all know that DC sucks for them. AFAIC, this is the best way to get in new Paladin builds, sort of like the way Swordmages are currently differentiated.

- I love the Domains from the preview and am glad ALL Divine classes benefit from them. In fact, the Domains are how Divine characters should've been differentiated from the start.

In a nutshell, they're giving all the deities a list of associated domains in Divine Power. The deity you choose allows you to access feats associated with the domains on their list.

The domain-associated feats include extra Channel Divinity feats that you can select as long as your deity has that domain. In addition to those, there are also specific Domain feats that grant your at-will powers extra perks (a la the Arena feats from Dragon).

They have been a long time coming - FINALLY the divine classes will "feel" like Divine classes.

I am hoping they give us more Divine Power previews this month.....really want to see some of the new lower level powers for the Invoker and Cleric. "Mantle of the Infidel" sounds cool and appears to be a melee or close power. Right now I am VERY disappointed in the 2nd level Utility Invoker powers and the lack of a Will-based attack Invoker power.

Hmm, sound pretty cool, and as AskaniPsion said, will make divine classes actually have more of a divine feel.

I am fervently hoping for Palalin utility powers that don't suck.

I think I posted this here or maybe on EnWorld, but here is the justice domain;
Justice
Justice lives differently in the mind of each person, and laws change with each ruler, but ideals of integrity and fairness exist in most societies -- even among those who see such ideals as weaknesses. Two gods take up the banner of justice, placing it among their highest virtues.
Bahamut sees justice as the tool of good intentions. Laws and honor exist to protect those who cannot protect themselves and to prevent those who wield power from taking the path of evil.
Erathis views justice as the driving force behind civilization. Without law -- without the shared understanding of what should and should not be -- society dissolves into chaos.
Other gods of justice would place their own perspectives on the concept. A deity of justice and death might be concerned only with providing the proper rewards and punishments to souls. An evil deity of justice might be an unforgiving judge who cleaves to the letter of the law, relishing in the technicalities that entrap decent souls.
Power of Justice [Domain]

Prerequisite: Any divine class, must worship a deity of the justice domain
Benefit: You gain a +2 feat bonus to Insight checks.
When you use a power associated with this feat and hit an enemy with it, each bloodied ally within 10 squares of you gains a +1 power bonus to attack rolls until the start of your next turn.
Powers: bond of censure (avenger DP), mantle of the infidel (invoker DP), righteous brand (cleric PH), virtuous strike (paladin DP)

Immediate Justice [Divinity]

Prerequisite: Channel Divinity class feature, must worship a deity of the justice domain
Benefit: You gain the Channel Divinity power immediate justice.

Channel Divinity: Immediate Justice
Feat Power
You enforce balance with a flare of divine energy that lances your enemy.
Encounter, Divine, Radiant
Immediate Reaction, Ranged 10
Trigger: An enemy reduces your ally to 0 hit points or fewer or damages your unconscious ally
Target: The triggering enemy
Effect: The target takes radiant damage equal to 5 + one-half your level.

Not to bad, there are supposed to be around thirty domains and each deity gets two to three domains.

Although ironically since it gives a power bonus it won't stack with the bonus from righteous brand itself! Still, nice at will to give all bloodied allies a bonus - and great for non clerics.

I'm hoping they have some sort of Vampire Hunter type build (with crossbow). But who knows what class it will be for? I could see it easily being Avenger, Cleric or Paladin.

Can't wait for July 21st!!
