| #1kerym_ammathSep 26, 2008 13:24:48 | As seen here http://www.amazon.com/Draconomicon-Chromatic-Dragons-Rules-Expansion/dp/0786949805/ref=pd_rhf_p_t_1 we now know why the MM did not have loads of background detail. Apparently we will be getting whole books of background material for the more popular critters. So where is my book of ORCS!? |
| #2stormknightSep 26, 2008 13:51:44 | That's...kinda pathetic. The original Draconomicon seemed pretty thin on content to me, and it covered Chromatics, Metallics and a bit more. |
| #3awesome_dudeSep 26, 2008 14:11:52 | Demogorgon on the cover of Monster Manual 2? Yes please.![]() |
| #4Seeker95Sep 26, 2008 14:14:22 | I like it. My Monster Manual has all that I *need*, and this gives me the option of expanding with stuff I might *want*. As for the book of Orcs, I suspect we'll see one of those from a Mongoose-like company before we see one from WotC. |
| #5trobonSep 26, 2008 14:30:53 | That's...kinda pathetic. The original Draconomicon seemed pretty thin on content to me, and it covered Chromatics, Metallics and a bit more. That's a poor argument for it being pathetic. In fact its an argument for it going to be good. This Draconomicon only has about 30 less pages compared to the first one, but that one had to cover over twice the number of dragons. In this book it will focus on chromatic dragons which means that the book will be able to cover more material for that group than the first one was able to. So in the end the content will be less thin. |
| #6kerym_ammathSep 26, 2008 15:59:13 | If they do the dragon servants/minions in a manner similar to the whole Orcus section, I will be well on my way to being satisfied. |
| #7mccowenSep 26, 2008 16:02:13 | Demogorgon on the cover of Monster Manual 2? Yes please. That's not necessarily Demogorgon. It could be any horrible, enormous Abyssal creature with two baboon heads, tentacle arms, and a prehensile tail. |
| #8awesome_dudeSep 26, 2008 16:17:27 | That's a poor argument for it being pathetic. In fact its an argument for it going to be good. There remains the possibility that the new Draconomicon contains numerous pages that say only "narwhal" repeatedly or something. It would attract the hipster crowd, who delight in such insanity. StormKnight could be working under this assumption. That's not necessarily Demogorgon. It could be any horrible, enormous Abyssal creature with two baboon heads, tentacle arms, and a prehensile tail. True, I forgot about the millions of demons that fit that exact description. Sorry about that. |
| #9trobonSep 26, 2008 16:23:42 | There remains the possibility that the new Draconomicon contains numerous pages that say only "narwhal" repeatedly or something. It would attract the hipster crowd, who delight in such insanity. StormKnight could be working under this assumption. :P I suppose it could do that and the CO board will still make something out of it. I just hope they add the Narwhal content to the compendium. ;) |
| #10down_with_powergamin_dupSep 26, 2008 16:27:27 | Finally! :bounce: Now I can actually read interesting things. |
| #11awesome_dudeSep 26, 2008 16:42:44 | :P I'm imagining what would happen if it was in a rules section. The arguments. Guy: No, you see, you can't do that. It specifies on pages 201-225 that: This ability cannot narwhal narwhal ... narwhal be used to do whatever it is the other dude wants to do with it. |
| #12Seeker95Sep 26, 2008 17:36:42 | This ability cannot narwhal narwhal ... narwhal be used to do whatever it is the other dude wants to do with it. Narwhal, the new smurf. |
| #13sigil_beguilerSep 27, 2008 11:09:42 | That's not necessarily Demogorgon. It could be any horrible, enormous Abyssal creature with two baboon heads, tentacle arms, and a prehensile tail. Well besides the fact that the developers have already stated that MM2 would have Demogorgon on the cover. |
| #14mccowenSep 27, 2008 11:14:36 | Well besides the fact that the developers have already stated that MM2 would have Demogorgon on the cover. Geez. It was irony, people. |
| #15trobonSep 27, 2008 11:19:10 | Geez. It was irony, people. No it was Demogorgon. Irony will be the demon prince on the cover of the MM3. :P |
| #16ranadielSep 27, 2008 12:47:00 | No it was Demogorgon. Irony will be the demon prince on the cover of the MM3. :P I thought that Irony was going to be on the cover of Draconomicon 2: Metallic Dragons. :P |
| #17fenrir7139Sep 27, 2008 20:28:28 | (content removed) Dude, you made me spit out the popcorn i was eating all over my desk! Damn it... |

| #19apollyonschosenSep 28, 2008 11:42:42 | Not cool! Why are they splitting the Draconomicon in two? The original had a pretty comprehensive overview of chromatic, metallic, gem etc. This seems to fall into the new business model of gradually releasing content in multiple volumes to generate sales. SO not needed. Now it will cost twice as much, three times as much if they arent all included in the second one. And with the huge font and lousy layout scheme they use i bet the word count won't even equal the original. What a ripoff! Ridiculous! |

SO not needed. Now it will cost twice as much, three times as much if they arent all included in the second one. Ridiculous! I disagree. The book might cost more to get, but you'll also be getting more out of each one. As I said above the new Draconomicon is only 30 pages shy of the first one and covers only half the material (chromatic). Since there are more pages for less creature that means we will get a much more thorough look at chromatic dragons and metallic dragons when they come out. I for one, am happy to see it split in two and being given a more in depth look at each one. |
| #21apollyonschosenSep 28, 2008 11:51:10 | Not when the font and layout are taken into consideration. There won't be "more" of anything. Except the number of volumes you must buy to equal the content of the original. Just how many of these are planned i wonder? Three, four, maybe even more? |

Except the number of volumes you must buy to equal the content of the original. Just how many of these are planned i wonder? Three, four, maybe even more? Five as a bare minimum, since there are five types of dragons now(not that I can remember all of them off the top of my head). Six if they decide to do one on gem dragons(but since gem dragons aren't true dragons anymore, I wouldn't count on it). |
| #24mouthymercSep 28, 2008 14:04:10 | Five as a bare minimum, since there are five types of dragons now(not that I can remember all of them off the top of my head). Six if they decide to do one on gem dragons(but since gem dragons aren't true dragons anymore, I wouldn't count on it). Chromatic dragons: red, blue. green, black, white plus three more in the new book. Catastrophic dragons: earthquake and typhoon named right now. Possibly tornado, tsunami, hurricane or any other natural disasters in a book. Metallic dragons: gold, silver, copper, iron, and adamantine right now. May see the return of the brass and bronze dragons in their book. Planar dragons: shadow, abyssal and fey dragons named. Possibly elemental chaos and astral dragons. These may show up in the Manual of the Planes book rather than their own Draconomicon. Scourge dragons: none named, but possibilities include usual four horsemen motifs; plague, famine, death, and war. There looks to be some interesting stuff in what has been implied so far. |
| #25awesome_dudeSep 28, 2008 14:11:56 | Five as a bare minimum, since there are five types of dragons now(not that I can remember all of them off the top of my head). Six if they decide to do one on gem dragons(but since gem dragons aren't true dragons anymore, I wouldn't count on it). My guess is two. Just because there are five types of dragons, doesn't mean all of them are popular. I think we'll see the metallic dragons covered and that'll be it. |
| #26RustmonsterSep 28, 2008 14:12:57 | Not when the font and layout are taken into consideration. There won't be "more" of anything. Except the number of volumes you must buy to equal the content of the original. Just how many of these are planned i wonder? Three, four, maybe even more? So... you have seen all of them and already know that the font is huge and that the layout is made in such a way that about 10 words fit on each page or something? Are those words "Narwal narwal narwal narwal narwal narwal narwal narwal narwal narwal."? |
| #27pacalypseSep 28, 2008 14:26:05 | So... you have seen all of them and already know that the font is huge and that the layout is made in such a way that about 10 words fit on each page or something? I'm sorry, but after the FRCG and FRPG...safe money is on large font & less overall information, of course this will be marketed as giving "freedom" to the DM...as opposed to skimping on word count and information. |
| #28ranadielSep 28, 2008 14:33:14 | Chromatic dragons: red, blue. green, black, white plus three more in the new book. Thank you!:D My guess is two. Just because there are five types of dragons, doesn't mean all of them are popular. I think we'll see the metallic dragons covered and that'll be it. I dunno, I see the Draconomicon as a yearly release like Adventurer's Vault. They seem to be doing books that expand pretty much every type of monster you can imagine(so far chromatic dragons, planar creatures, and undead), and I don't think that they would skip on giving us all the details on their new breeds of dragons. Edit: Besides Planar dragons are so much more awesome then metallic dragons. :D |
| #29trobonSep 28, 2008 14:44:13 | I would love to see all five of those given depth and scope in five books. First of all, anything that extends the shelf life of this RPG is a good thing in my books. Yeah I'm spending $$ per a book, but no matter what WotCis going to put out a book a month or so and if they didn't have 5 draconomicons then it would be four months sooner that we would see 5th edition. Secondly, even with the larger type and book style I still think we will see more information on dragons themselves. The Amazon description didn't even mention any crunch, and while there may be some, it seems like it would be less (especially since mosnters aren't made like people any more). Finally, I hate it when something great comes along in a sourcebook and then never gets mentioned again. If I saw planar dragons in MM3 and then a draconomicon for them, I would be thrilled to get the extra information instead of just seeing them once and then "bye bye" |
| #30williamhm75Sep 28, 2008 14:59:01 | I would love to see all five of those given depth and scope in five books. Id just like to point out that if you preorder from barnes and noble.com, or amazon.com the cost is not that high. |
| #31mouthymercSep 28, 2008 15:01:47 | I never picked up the original Draconomicon, so I won't feel put out by the new book not having metallics in it. I like that they are concentrating on one type. This means I don't have to pick up the book on metallics if I choose not to. I think, if they follow with Draconomicons for all the dragons, the most likely to be picked up by me are the Chromatic, Catastrophe and Scourge. I haven't decided on the Planar as I'm not sure how interested in the Planes I am. I'm still waffling on picking up the Manual of the Planes when it comes out. I've never been one for the Planes too much. The Metallic book would be the lowest priority for me. Not much use for good dragons other than RP stuff. Although, I suppose if it would mean more if I just made them alternate evil dragons. |
| #32trobonSep 28, 2008 15:02:41 | Id just like to point out that if you preorder from barnes and noble.com, or amazon.com the cost is not that high. I actually buy the .pdfs so the cost isn't that high anyway, but it's still more than $20 a month for it. Still, I feel like its my hobby and paying for it is perfectly fine. I'll be getting the subscription to DDI that costs less (The one without the VTT) for the magazines and the bonus tools and will be buying the books every month so I figure it will be about $30 a month or so. Still, as I said before, its money I'd be putting to D&D either way and better that 4th edition lasts longer. |

I just like to have the books, that said I probably wont be picking these up because Im not dming anything. So would be a complete waste of money for me to pick them up, might read through someone elses though just to see whats in them. |
| #34MouseferatuSep 28, 2008 16:07:21 | Metallic book would be the lowest priority for me. Not much use for good dragons other than RP stuff. Why assume it's a book about "good" dragons? The Monster Manual pretty specifically says that not all metallics are good-aligned, after all. (That is, while a lot of them are, many fail to live up to Bahamut's teachings--or don't even try--and "succumb to selfishness and aggression.") |
| #35MouseferatuSep 28, 2008 16:08:51 | Scourge dragons: none named, but possibilities include usual four horsemen motifs; plague, famine, death, and war. I certainly don't have any inside info on this (and couldn't go into it if I did), but just based on their descriptions, I'd be willing to bet that the "scourge dragons" are 4E's version of the linnorm dragons from 2E and 3E. Which, if true, I'd be all over. I love those guys in the "evil DM" part of my soul. :evillaugh |
| #36mouthymercSep 28, 2008 16:41:46 | Why assume it's a book about "good" dragons? Because in general, they are good. I'm not saying that there aren't any that are evil, just that they are predominately good. That makes it a book of less priority for me. |
| #37mouthymercSep 28, 2008 16:43:08 | I certainly don't have any inside info on this (and couldn't go into it if I did), but just based on their descriptions, I'd be willing to bet that the "scourge dragons" are 4E's version of the linnorm dragons from 2E and 3E. They are actually referred to as linnorms in the dragon write-up in the MM, so I think that would be a good call. |
| #38Seeker95Sep 28, 2008 16:57:20 | Why assume it's a book about "good" dragons? For the same reason a book about chromatic dragons is considered a book about the evil dragons. Not all chromatic dragons are evil, but most are. Reverse it for the metallics. When you find a cave in the wilderness top protect you from the oncoming storm, and you discover it is occupied by a red dragon, you are wise to assume it is evil, and protect yourself accordingly. |
| #39viktor_von_doomSep 28, 2008 17:39:51 | I remember a time my players came upon a Black Dragon sleeping in a swamp. THey just fought it and killed it without any warning then smashed the eggs. When they got through the swamp they were arrested for killing the cities protector. They got pretty mad at me about it to. |
| #40MouseferatuSep 28, 2008 17:56:57 | They are actually referred to as linnorms in the dragon write-up in the MM, so I think that would be a good call. Are they?! *flip, flip* Well, damn. How'd I miss that? I feel like an idiot. ![]() |
| #41MouseferatuSep 28, 2008 18:00:36 | Because in general, they are good. I'm not sure that's true. As I read the MM, I got the impression that there was a pretty even split. (Of course, given my brain-fart on the linnorms, I'm not sure I'd trust my reading of the MM at the moment. ;)) But I guess we'll see when MM2 comes out. ![]() |
| #42thefounderprimeSep 28, 2008 18:20:01 | Six if they decide to do one on gem dragons(but since gem dragons aren't true dragons anymore, I wouldn't count on it). Do we have a source for this one? |
| #43ranadielSep 29, 2008 6:34:16 | Do we have a source for this one? You mean that Gem Dragons aren't true dragons any more? Well I just double checked the MM and I remembered the passage wrong. They might still be true dragons, but they aren't a major family of them anymore.:embarrass I was remembering it as there only being 5 families of Dragons, not only five major families of Dragons(slight difference there). |
| #44darth_azalinSep 30, 2008 1:26:43 | Chromatic dragons: red, blue. green, black, white plus three more in the new book. 3 More Chromatics??? Tiamat is growing heads? Might as well refer to her as a Hydra and not a Dragon... |
| #45ranadielSep 30, 2008 6:50:04 | 3 More Chromatics??? Tiamat is growing heads? Might as well refer to her as a Hydra and not a Dragon... Or she could stay with five heads only....like she has done every other time they have added new chromatics. |
| #46darth_azalinSep 30, 2008 20:30:19 | Or she could stay with five heads only....like she has done every other time they have added new chromatics. What new Chromatics? |
| #47ranadielSep 30, 2008 21:17:01 | What new Chromatics? Off the top of my head I know that the brown dragon existed in 3.X and I'm sure that wasn't the only new chromatic dragon in previous editions(I'm pretty sure I've seen someone mention that all three of the "new chromatics" were actually present in previous editions). |
| #48captainswiftSep 30, 2008 22:25:19 | What new Chromatics? Brown has been fairly common, appearing in quite a few products over the editions. There was a Yellow dragon in the 2e Draconomicon. An issue of Dragon completed the color wheel with a (different from the above) Yellow, Purple, and Orange dragons. |
| #49mouthymercOct 01, 2008 7:25:26 | What new Chromatics? There have been brown, yellow, orange and purple dragons. There may have been others, but I can not recall at this time. What the three will be in the new Draconomicon I can not say for sure. As far as Tiamat goes, I don't recall her getting any more heads than the five she has. Besides, as a god I see no reason she couldn't just change the colour of the heads as she pleases anyways. She is a god and not a mere monster. |
| #50mouthymercOct 01, 2008 7:37:52 | An issue of Dragon completed the color wheel with a (different from the above) Yellow, Purple, and Orange dragons. The Dragon Compendium Vol. I (Paizo) included the orange, purple, and yellow dragons updated to 3.5E mechanics. According to that article they were originally published in Dragon back in '82 in issue #65 for AD&D. They were updated to AD&D2 in '98 in issue #248. |
| #51ranadielOct 01, 2008 8:00:43 | What the three will be in the new Draconomicon I can not say for sure. I can.:P They are purple, brown, and grey. |
| #52mouthymercOct 01, 2008 8:02:53 | I can.:P They are purple, brown, and grey. Well, there you go then. Thanks. I guess that will leave room for the orange and yellow dragons to be in some other source in the future. |
