| #1sarutobi02Aug 01, 2008 18:11:57 | So, according to the amazon website "Draconomicon I: Chromatic Dragons describes several varieties of dragons, including red, blue, green, black, and white dragons, as well as three completely new chromatic dragons." So, what do you think are the new types of dragon. I'll say Yellow for deserts, Cyan for sea... and possibly rainbow (ugh) I'd like to see a pink dragon with laughing gas as a breath weapon. ;) |
| #2StevemanAug 01, 2008 18:28:16 | Seeing as I believe the line that Amazon gave about "completely new" chromatics is total BS (or at the very least, only true from a certain point of view... i.e. as a core dragon type), I think we should look at older, obscure, chromatic dragons that have existed in the past... The acid breathing, desert dwelling brown dragons. pic The explosive oil spitting, forest dwelling orange dragons. The radiant light breathing, plains dewlling purple dragons. The salt water breathing, sea dwelling yellow dragons. |
| #3GrazelAug 01, 2008 18:29:57 | Well it was stated somewhere that it would be yellow, brown, and purple dragons. |
| #4sarutobi02Aug 01, 2008 18:34:02 | Wah, you're right! You forced me to open my old 2nd ed MM. Blue dragon was one hell of beast! :-) |
| #5pukunuiAug 02, 2008 14:56:40 | Well it was stated somewhere that it would be yellow, brown, and purple dragons. It was established quite some time ago that the new dragons will be grey, brown and purple. I believe the grey dragon is featured on the cover: ![]() Seeing as I believe the line that Amazon gave about "completely new" chromatics is total BS (or at the very least, only true from a certain point of view... i.e. as a core dragon type), I think we should look at older, obscure, chromatic dragons that have existed in the past... Also, for the record, Amazon's just quoting WotC's catalog. WotC are the ones saying there will be three *new* dragons in the book. Whether or not they're really new remains to be seen. |
| #6baik_telorAug 30, 2008 2:43:45 | Is there any chance we'll see dragons as playable races in this book? One of my friends mentioned a "Council of Worms" game and it got me wondering on the subject. |
| #7sfdragonAug 30, 2008 3:46:15 | It was established quite some time ago that the new dragons will be grey, brown and purple. adamantium or its a white dragon |
| #8pukunuiAug 30, 2008 6:38:59 | adamantium or its a white dragon This book is only for the chromatics, and the adamantine dragon is a metallic, so it's not that ... and it's definitely not a white dragon either. That's not what white dragons look like. As I said, it has been established already that the new dragons are brown, grey and purple. The dragon on the cover looks pretty grey to me. |
| #9ranadielAug 30, 2008 7:19:26 | Is there any chance we'll see dragons as playable races in this book? One of my friends mentioned a "Council of Worms" game and it got me wondering on the subject. I would not count on it because dragons seem to a bit overpowered compared to the other PHB races and as there is no level adjustment mechanic(for the benefit of us all), I really don't see anyway that they could dilute a dragon down to the appropriate power level without basically just making them dragonborn. This book is only for the chromatics, and the adamantine dragon is a metallic, so it's not that ... and it's definitely not a white dragon either. That's not what white dragons look like. I don't suppose you have a link on where this was confirmed? I seem to recall it, but I can't find the original source and would like to link to that in my compilation topic. |
| #10squarecircleAug 30, 2008 14:27:28 | This book is only for the chromatics, and the adamantine dragon is a metallic, so it's not that ... and it's definitely not a white dragon either. That's not what white dragons look like. It looks like a brown dragon in blue lighting to me. /shrug |
| #11blu_skreemAug 30, 2008 14:35:12 | I think a dragon could be playable if they make a Dragon Class rather than a race. Might be hard to do, but I imagine there is demand. |
| #12squarecircleAug 30, 2008 14:38:16 | I think Dragonborn is their way of making the "dragon" playable. Really a brilliant move, that race. I think a full-fledged dragon as a playable race would be overpowered except in campaigns where everyone is a dragon or a creature of equally viable power. |
| #13ranadielAug 30, 2008 14:47:41 | It looks like a brown dragon in blue lighting to me. /shrug But weren't brown dragons wingless? |
| #14squarecircleAug 30, 2008 15:00:32 | But weren't brown dragons wingless? And angels weren't faceless. Much has changed with 4th edition. ;) Anyway, I'm not trying to suggest it actually is a brown dragon, I'm just saying that's the color it looks like to me. It would make sense though, if brown is indeed a chromatic dragon this time around. IIRC, brown "dragons" weren't "true" dragons in the past, but if they are being included in this book, particularly with its subtitle, it'd make sense that they get wings and everything else just like all the other dragons. |
| #15pukunuiAug 30, 2008 15:48:10 | I don't suppose you have a link on where this was confirmed? I seem to recall it, but I can't find the original source and would like to link to that in my compilation topic. It was confirmed in one of WotC's recent catalogs. I read about it on EN World (The store owner who posts as thalmin over there is the one who always posts info from WotC catalogs). EDIT: Here's the excerpt from the WotC Fall Catalog: Draconomicon: Chromatic Dragons November 18th 288 pages, $39.95 "...details of each dragon's powers, tactics, myths, lairs, servitors, and more." Side Bar 3 New Chromatic Dragons: Brown, Purple and Grey Personally, I think those are very boring colors but whatever ... Brown? Could be ok. Purple? Too Barney. Grey? They kicked the brass and bronze dragons out of the "top ten" because they felt they were too hard to tell apart. So what do we get instead? Two new dragons that are just as hard to tell apart (both the adamantine and iron dragons are grey, if their minis are anything to go by). On top of that, now we're getting an actual grey dragon. So we're still going to have the problem of hard-to-distinguish dragons ... ![]() |
| #16the_ubbergeekAug 30, 2008 16:28:24 | there *may* be links with Dragonborns... |
| #17pukunuiAug 30, 2008 16:39:46 | there *may* be links with Dragonborns... Indeed. We might see a feat that gives dragonborn wings in the book. |
| #18ranadielAug 30, 2008 16:56:18 | Indeed. We might see a feat that gives dragonborn wings in the book. That would go against some of their stated goals(keeping players from having to haul around 20 books to the table for all of their characters feats and such), so I doubt that they would do that so early into the game's life cycle. |
| #19pukunuiAug 30, 2008 17:04:16 | That would go against some of their stated goals(keeping players from having to haul around 20 books to the table for all of their characters feats and such), so I doubt that they would do that so early into the game's life cycle. That's true. It's more likely to be in the PHB2. But it's possible there could be some options to make dragonborn more dragon-like in the Draconomicon books. |
| #20sigil_beguilerAug 30, 2008 17:30:26 | My personal hopes for the Grey and Brown are: Greys are creatures that enjoy the solitude and isolation of mist and fog. They fly and live within rolling banks of fog that crisscross the lands. They are hardly ever seen but their devastation is easily visible as the fog moves away; leaving behind destroyed towns, broken people and all different manners of carnage. Most people will only see the barest glimpse of one, be it a shadow within the fog or a head rearing its head out of the fog bank to snatch a meal. Browns are some of the earliest of dragons and the most feral. Their hard scaled bodies hide a basic and animalistic-mind, they are viewed as beasts even amongst other dragons only caring about mating, eating and hoarding. They have no language and live in packs similar to wolf packs using physical strength and aggression to determine ranks. |
| #21sfdragonAug 30, 2008 23:25:53 | well the 4e brown, what to we know of, nothing. the speculations: if its like the 3.x version its wingless and digs and is flightless. iron dragon: no knowledge of any concrete info, nothing i could speculate either. save its breath is likely to be paralyzing and that is based off the iron golem of old, which reminds me...... still looks like its a white dragon and the light source is a bit off. furthermore the terrain looks like ice with a ruined ship in the back. |
| #22thecasualoblivionAug 30, 2008 23:43:51 | They hinted at Grey Dragons several times in the FRCG. |
| #23pukunuiAug 30, 2008 23:56:22 | iron dragon: no knowledge of any concrete info, nothing i could speculate either. All we know about the iron dragon is that it's supposed to be the metallic version of the white dragon ("a not-too-bright, savage killer", according to W&M). It was a fairly contentious issue early on because the designers were taking so-called "needless symmetry" out of the game with one hand (changing devils and demons so they don't mirror each other so much, getting rid of identical monsters for each base element) and putting it back in with the other (turning archons into the identical monster for each base element, making the metallic and chromatic dragon families mirror each other more). We also know what the iron dragon looks like thanks to the upcoming mini: ![]() still looks like its a white dragon and the light source is a bit off. I didn't think so at first but you could have a point. The dragon's head looks wrong but it's a head-on angle so that could be why. Here is the latest white dragon mini and the book cover for comparison: ![]() ![]() The main similarity that I can see is the overlapping plates on the wings where they meet the dragon's shoulders. That and the fact that the dragon's mouth is glowing blue, which is usually associated with cold ... So you could very well be right. BTW, W&M claims that the adamantine and iron dragons will be easily distinguished by color (as opposed to the brass and bronze dragons), but if you ask me, between white, grey, adamantine, iron, and silver, I think they've actually made distinguishing them by color worse rather than better. They'll have to be distinguished by shape instead (for instance, the adamantine dragon has an ankylosaurus-style spikey mace on the end of its tail). |
| #24sfdragonAug 31, 2008 0:32:36 | the fin is noticeable on the head too....... its white and not a horned iron dragon and i think this was the adamantium dragon since it has the barbed tail that you mentioned http://wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/4art/20080219a |
| #25DuskweaverAug 31, 2008 2:05:31 | I do hope one of the new dragon types is noted as dwelling in deserts, since all blue dragons apparently upped sticks and moved to the coast between 3rd and 4th editions. My current campaign is set on the edge of a desert and I'd like to include a dragon at some point that doesn't feel like it's gotten lost. And that dragon on the cover is obviously a white. The glowing blue eyes, the shoulder scales, the head crest, the size and placing of cheek and chin spikes and the lack of horns are all there. |
| #26pukunuiAug 31, 2008 14:25:45 | the fin is noticeable on the head too....... I never suggested it was. What I was complaining about was the fact that there are now four greyish dragons (iron, adamantine, silver, and grey) ... which is worse than having two browny dragons (brass and bronze). and i think this was the adamantium dragon since it has the barbed tail that you mentioned Yes, that's the adamantine dragon. |
| #27squarecircleAug 31, 2008 16:29:54 | I have to agree, that definitely looks like a white dragon on the cover. The nose/snout only looks off at first because of the angle, but on closer inspection, it's definitely that of a white dragon, and everything else fits, too. |
| #28GrazelSep 01, 2008 16:31:04 | Also the mini's I have of the admantine dragon it's a very dark grey, almost black, but doesn't have the horns of the black dragon so is distinguishable. |
| #29feylinSep 01, 2008 16:46:38 | Ok, ummm Check the ![]() Ranadiel Check the subTitle on the picture it says Chromatic Dragons |
| #30ranadielSep 01, 2008 17:25:34 | Ok, ummm Check the Why did you quote me? I don't really see any correlation between what you quoted and your response to said quote.![]() |
| #31GlimmTheGnomeSep 01, 2008 19:41:18 | My guess is that the purple dragon will be based on 3E's deep dragon in an attempt to fold all true dragons into one of the families (metallic, chromatic, planar, etc). Brown could be based on 3E's brown dragon especially since blue dragons have left the desert. I don't have any ideas on grey dragons, but it evokes a rocky theme for me with possibly a thunder breath weapon... |
| #32doctorhookSep 01, 2008 20:05:28 | The dragon on the cover of Draconomicon I is pretty clearly a white dragon, given its features, surroundings, and colour. Using our eyes will end this debate quickly. Also, as another poster mentioned, Adamantine Dragons are more black- than grey-coloured, though shinier than Black Dragons and with very different features. There won't be any confusion here. |
| #33VaelSep 03, 2008 14:39:51 | Aside from new colours ... I'd hope to see Elite and Standard variants of the Chromatics ... shake up the Players to throw a party of Dragons at them. |
| #34tyrandorSep 03, 2008 17:23:05 | BTW, W&M claims that the adamantine and iron dragons will be easily distinguished by color (as opposed to the brass and bronze dragons), but if you ask me, between white, grey, adamantine, iron, and silver, I think they've actually made distinguishing them by color worse rather than better. What I was complaining about was the fact that there are now four greyish dragons (iron, adamantine, silver, and grey) ... which is worse than having two browny dragons (brass and bronze). I have the Adamantite Dragon mini, and when I first opened the box and saw a BLACK dragon, I went 'cool! a black dragon!'. It's only when I opened the plastic wrapped and took a closer look that I noticed he didn't have the 'skull face'... and the card clearly indentified him as a Young Adamantite Dragon. So he's definitly not Gray. He's black. Other thing to notice: - He is a level 7 solo elite. - Adamantite Dragon's Breath does Thunder Damage and impose a -2 to all attack (save ends) penalty (or it could be -2 to Defense, I'm going from memory here). - He has a Claw attack and a bite attack listed. His 'special' move is a double claw attack (no three hit combo for him unlike White and Blue dragons) - When using his Breath Weapon and not bloodied, he has an automatic Burst 3 (I think) thunder damage effect. - The young adamantite dragon doesn't have any special 'tail ability', which doesn't mean older dragons of this subtype won't get one. I can post more info once I'm home and I get my card. Someone mentionned having the Iron Dragon mini... care to share any info? :P |
| #35doctorhookSep 03, 2008 20:03:47 | I have the Adamantite Dragon mini, and when I first opened the box and saw a BLACK dragon, I went 'cool! a black dragon!'. Adamantine Dragon is a Solo Soldier. :P Also, I imagine that stat block to be very preliminary compared to what will appear in MM2. Perhaps it's just an isolated error, but for example, the Max HP listed on the card is off by about 200 points. (It says 133/66, but it should say 332/166, assuming its Constitution is correct. FWIW, MM1's Young Red Dragon is also a level 7 Solo Soldier, and has 332/166 HP.) |
