Dungeon tiles: we need tiles that depict the *walls*, not the rooms.

The purpose of this thread is to inform WotC about the gaming needs of our own group. The experience of other player groups may vary. Still, I suspect, there are enough players out there who may also prefer the following suggestion, so its worth mentioning.

As a consensus, my D&D group decided they dont like using Dungeon Tiles, as is. The complaint: 'Its too much like the game of Tetris. We never have the tiles in the shapes we need'. Having room-shaped tiles isnt so helpful.

Instead, it would be helpful to have ...

DUNGEON WALL-TILES: Long thin tiles with images of the DUNGEON WALLS, only. Each wall-tile could be, say, 1x5 squares or 1x10 squares, as standard sizes. We need wall-tiles in a variety of appearances, like ceramic bricks, white stucco, raw cavern walls, etc. We will then lay these walls directly on the battlemat in whatever shape is necessary to define the edges of a particular room. When placed, these wall-tiles can partly overlap if necessary, for example, we would overlap two 1x5-square wall-tiles to represent a southern wall that is 8 squares long. Most wall-tiles would only show some flooring one side of the wall, while the other side of the wall would be a vague 'background' filler to represent the inside of the wall. A 'wall' that was a thin screen would show some flooring on both sides of the 'wall'.

OBJECT-TILES: It would also be helpful to have each individual object or feature as a separate tile. For example.

  • A 1x1 square picture of a door, that would then be placed on top of a wall-tile to represent a doorway. Larger monumental doors, gates, and archways may be upto 1x4 squares large. Or so on.

  • A 1x1 square picture of a column, usually a circle seen from above. Colossal columns might be 2x2 or even more. These circular columns would be placed on the battlemat wherever there happened to be a column.

  • A pit, 1x1 to 3x3, depending on the size. Alternatively, a 1x5 tile with a picture of only the edge of a pit, if it is a large pit or chasm. These would be placed around to define the edge of the pit, similar to how the wall-tiles define the edge of the room.

  • Various stairways, pools and water edges.

  • A 5x5 picture of flooring with a torch or brazier in the center square could be placed directly on the battlemat to represent an illuminated area. Etc.

  • A chair, a table, a sarcophagus, etc. as a separate tile, to be placed wherever necessary on the battlemat.

  • A ritual area, 3x3 and other sizes, with luminous magic effects, glowing inscriptions, protective circles, etc. In previously published dungeon tiles, these have been especially beautiful. Or creepy, depending on the scene.

These 'object-tiles', we already have, by cutting them out from the previously published dungeon tiles. But it would be convenient if in the future we could buy each object or feature as a separate tile.

FANCY BATTLEMATS: It would be awesome to have fancy battlemats with a variety of surfaces, such as, marble flooring, cut stone, raw cavern floor, outdoor soil, sand, swamp, or so on. Even a watery surface for aquatic adventures. We would then place the wall-tiles and object-tiles directly on the special battlemat.

Our current gaming setup is to play on a large battlemat with a large sheet of glass on top of it. Then with an erasable marker, we draw all the dungeon room information on the glass, and place our minis on the appropriate spots. We erase it and redraw the new rooms as we progress thru the adventure. Players volunteer to keep track of the larger dungeon map as we explore it.

Sometimes we tear strips of paper to define the walls of a room.

If we had a beautiful battlemat under the glass, and wall-tiles and object-tiles on top of it, it would look great and work well for us.

Just FYI, Paizo sells these -- I think they have most if not all of the surfaces you've mentioned. I'm very fond of them. Look for Flip Mats on their site.

I have a question, this is a PDf that you buy and print out yourself correct?

Yes, but they are quite simple, and reusable as long as you have a printer

Personally I think all Dungeon Tiles are a waste. I just love my regular old reusable Battlemat, and then I spend the cash I would have wasted on Dungeon Tiles toward more figs...better use of gaming cash IMHO.

Tiles and Battlemaps work just fine for me. I either hand draw my maps with old fashioned pencil and paper and then darken them up with sharpies, or download any battlemaps I can find and adapt them to whatever I can use them for. I have about 6 to 8 different sets of the official D&D tiles (2 or 3 of the caves sets, a couple forest and outdoor sets and the rest are the all the Giants set) I just mix and match them to build as accurately as I can to the Heroic Tier series.

But I really drool when I see stuff like this! I wish I had the resources!!

I don't know. You get like two figs for the price of a whole set of dungeon tiles. Seems like a better deal to me as both are there to increase immersion.

I get 32.

Admittedly, that's from one of the cheaper companies, and using the full retail price of the dungeon tiles... and I do use and love 15mm minis.  More expensive ranges would still give me 15-20.

Anyway, some walls would be handy, but a walls-only product would not be that useful.  Perhaps a sheet of walls in the upcoming master set would be a good option.

Where are you getting 32 minis for $10? I must know.

UK retail is £7.99, so £8.  Essex prices are... oh, drat.  £2.10 for 8 infantry, or 6 command.  So not strictly accurate, and even then only for basic troops.  And they're better at historicals than fantasy, so for the most part you're looking at humans from them despite their fantasy range, other companies do fantasy better.

But hey, it's close, and really good if you play games with lots of human NPCs, especially if you have humans from a variety of civilisations.

To go slightly cheaper, with Irregular minis it's 25p a model for most of the human-sized stuff.

Splintered Light have a whole bunch of cool ranges, but are pricier - -9ish for 12.  They sell skeletal war mammoths, though, so a little expense can be forgiven, and it still works out as 18 or so for £8.

Before you accuse me of cheating, remember I did specify 15mm.  Small, detailed, cheap, and quick to paint.
