Dying Speculation?

I will concede that I might be imagining this. However, does it seem to anyone else that excitement over speculation is dying out? I don't know quite what it is, but it seems that the lack of information makes many threads obsolete. After all, many posters are merely stating what they would like in future products rather than positing fact in order to reach a logical conclution.

I remember the days of "first letter of each race." I recall times where we were told how many classes would be in a PH, and even how many of a certain role or power source. It is hard to forget sinking my teeth into interesting speculation based on cryptic clues from developers.

Frankly, I feel that these interesting tid-bits are lacking. Certainly, we get enough pre-release material, but that does not energize the community any more than a splat-book does (which is to say that is does energize it, but not enough).

Again, this might just be me ... but I feel less inclined to discuss these topics everyday. Mostly because I read things I like, I read things I don't like, but none of it is based on clues or facts. It just makes me a bit sad.

I think the previous releases were bigger and thus encouraged that kind of speculation. But yes, first letters etc. would be good. Would love to see it for the next monster manual. "okay we know that the first 5 "W"s are for wyrmling dragons but the other 20??"

With how they managed to pull off the Avenger, Warden, and Shaman, the revelation that Ki is dead, Monks being Psionic, and the Psion (and most other Psionic classes) not having encounter powers...

I'm done speculating. They keep surprising me to the point where I don't care about accurately predicting what's around the next bend. I'm just leaning back and enjoying the ride now.

We've received some hints about the next Campaign Setting and if you look through the Dark Sun thread you'll find a fair bit of cyphering going on to support that info to be related to Dark Sun.

The Dragonlance thread on the other hand, you don't find nearly as much of that. Much of that is going on there is about the fluff of the Dragonlance world.

I must agree. I used to enjoy coming to these forums (spending more time here than i should have) and viewing the speculation based on hints Wizards has dropped for us. This was primarily for the PHBII, of which i got many nice goodies out of in the end.

PHBIII? We either know pretty much everything about something, or nothing at all. Everyone's throwing only slightly different views of the psionic lineup around, and people seem to be begging for a soulknife. Races tend to be all over the place, and people dont even know if there's 6 or 8 classes.

It is likely better to just sit back and see if wizards drops any class names with the Gith preview next month.

As for DS vrs DL. If its DS i'll considering buying its PG, if its DL i'll just wait till its in the character builder.

You're right, the mood is changing -- but it's natural, and it's not something to be sad about. FWIW, this is the rather banal nature of Future Releases discussions through most of 3E/3.5E's lifespan. It doesn't mean that anything's wrong, it just means that folks are being more satisfied with what 4E is already giving them, and that they're more familiar with it, and that WotC has already past the biggest hurdles with the newest edition: making customers comfortable with it.

There's still going to be new bursts of "excitement" here, as new PHs and settings are announced or hinted at, but the hints are going to be more slow to appear (because they don't need to market as much to existing players anymore). We're right on track.

Much of the previous speculation was fueled by the fact that there were many as yet unreleased classes and races. Many of us were hot to be the one that uncovered the clue that revealed the Gnome was comfirmed or the Druid.
With the announcement that PHB3 will be Psionic, Primal ans Divine heroes, the enthusiaism has cooled due to the fact that psionics is not a widely used power source IMHO, primal and divine classes are basically covered.
With the playtest of the monk, only a few classic classes are left, Necromancer, Assassin (Sept), Illusionist and a shadowcaster; all probably tied to the shadow power source.
Where speculation has really died is the Elemental Power source, I'm really hoping for a series of previews similar to PHB3 for PHB4 and PHB5, I'm thinking phb4 for Shadow, Martial and Psionic heroes and phb5 for Elemental, Arcane and Shadow heroes.
And for PHB6... the Aberrant Power source!

Going with the current format, PHB4/5 will include more psionic classes.

And seriously? Aberrant? That's mostly fluff, although you might be able to pull off a "power from the far realms" sort of thing. Oh wait, star pact warlocks already do that. What's next? Draconic? (Sorcerer) Angelic? (Invoker)
