...Some [NPC/monster] races need more tweaking [to be PC races] than others. If we ever get around to doing a version of the kobold as a PC race, we'll probably change shifty pretty significantly. You'll see more examples of how a PC race is not always the same as a monster race in the Eberron Player's Guide this summer.

I'm not sure what's to discuss. I think just about everybody knew that the full racial writeups in the PHB2 would be quite different from the MM writeups.

Now, of the "Eberron races", there's Doppelgangers (Changelings), Shifters, and Warforged which all appear in the MM. (Any of the goblin races are possible, too.) Since we know Shifters will be in PH2...

Discuss!

I think doppelgager is getting a big change...before anyone asks I am not sure in what way...it is just the gut feeling I had as I read it...

I'm hoping that's a hint that a) there will be more than the assumed 2 races in the EPG, and that b) 2 of them will be the Doppleganger and Hobgoblin.

Doppelganger (nee Changeling) seems likely. The Kalashtar is a must-have, and there's been whispers from Hellcow that the ECS Warforged will not be identical to the Dragon Magazine Warforged. Fortunately, shifters are in PHB2, so there won't need to be space in the ECS for them.

Kalashtar, dopplegangers, and warforged are all dead-certs to be there. Even if I saw someone suggest the warforged might not be there - can you imagine picking up the EPG and not getting the warforged in it?

There's a chance the hobgoblin and/or orc may be there, but I wouldn't bet too much on that. Dopplegangers may colloquially refer to themselves as 'changelings', especially the benign ones.

I dunno about Kalashtar. With the Psionic power source not showing up until(speculation) PH3, we may not see them in the EPG. I think we might see Goblins and Hobgoblins, as well as Changlings and Warforged.

I remember reading an interview or some kind of article last year with a developer talking about kalashtars. Someone had asked about how they'd work without psionics in the game.

The developer responded that they have a power (or other feature) that 'feels' psionic. He added the good thing about 4E powers is that they aren't specifically tied to a certain power source; for example, if you called Magic Missile a psionic power by changing its keyword from Arcane to Psionic it wouldn't make much of a difference.

With that said, the kalashtar power (assuming they have one) may have the Psionic keyword. That would at least be irrelevant if psionics came out or not. As we saw with the Shadow Captain paragon path, that's all Shadow keyword and not martial (IIRC)

It's about speculating on the races -- and potentially the classes (Artificer) and class options -- that will appear in the Eberron Player's Guide. Folks seem to have figured it out.

Kalashtar, dopplegangers, and warforged are all dead-certs to be there. Even if I saw someone suggest the warforged might not be there - can you imagine picking up the EPG and not getting the warforged in it?

Agreed, completely. If there's one thing that I'm doubting, it's kalashtar, even though this is the best place for them. I'm still a believer that they'll be in the EPG, but what can I say? All the kalashtar-naysayers (oMfG! n0 pZ10nIcS!) are bumming me out with their negativity, that's all.

FWIW, Eberron has lots of unique races to deal with, so as well as goblins, hobgoblins, and orcs might fit into the setting, I think they'd be still better suited to Dragon Magazine articles, because they're all so ubiquitous.

I needed to hear that right now. Thanks, dude/tte.

Shadow Captain isn't the only example (High Forest Scout was an earlier example, IIRC), but it's a little beside the point. No racial powers have any power source keywords AFAIK, despite the fact that many of them fit into one power source or another fairly well. Fey Step isn't Arcane, Second Chance isn't Martial, Telekinetic Leap isn't Psionic. Kalashtar will probably have a "psychic-" or "psionic-" themed racial power, but I'm certain it won't have the Psionic keyword. (The Psychic keyword is a different story; it's a damage type, not a power source, so it's quite possible for a racial power to have "psychic" as a keyword.)

Should you ever write a fantasy horror novel titled "Whispers from the Hellcow", you will have me as a devoted reader.

lol You should know, "Hellcow" is the username of Keith Baker, the primary author of Eberron. Depending on where on the internet you are, he goes by either that or "Bossy the Cow", IIRC. ("Bossy" is the name his pet cow... a plush cow. :P He's got pictures on his website.)

I hate to be a buzzkill(or perhaps revel in the opportunity for it), but he is remembering the quote a little off.

How will kalashtar work in the absence of psionics?
They are given a psionic flavor without confining them to a psionic class, much as current powers have a psionic flavor, dealing psychic damage.

All it says is that Kalashtar will be given a psionic flavor. That means the Deva=Kalashtar theory still works(refluffing Devas to be psionic rather than divine would give them a psionic flavor).:P

Buzzkill indeed, R! ...This is because I keep deliberately going off-topic in your stickied thread, isn't it? :P

I don't know what you are talking about. I am simply performing my self appointed job of correcting all inaccuracies that I see. That I happen to post frequently following you is of no concern of mine.:P
