From this thread:

No wilden unless I missed it. There is indeed a supporting cast section, which talks about Genasi, Gnolls, Goblins, Kobolds, Minotaurs and Orcs.

Kobolds and Goblins for sure, because we're still shy on Small races, and because both are fairly iconic. Orcs would be great too, but care would have to be taken so as not to make them redundant with Half-Orcs (although 4E is pretty good about avoiding redundancy, usually).

While it is certainly possible that the supporting cast list gives us a window to the PHB3 races, im more inclined to believe that those specific races were included because they are either already released in some form (genasi, minotaur, gnoll) or because they played an important role in the last edition (goblins and orcs). Of course ive got no explanation as to why kobold made the list, so if i had to guess if one of those is races is a PHB3 one, it would be the diminutive lizard men.

My thoughts exactly. I generally just borrow friend's copies of the books, whether it be PH, DMG, MM, AP, etc. If the PH3 has Gnolls (:D), Minotaur and Gith (we know these two already), I would buy this book for myself no questions asked. Kobolds, Orcs and Goblins would just be icing to finish off the cake.

The arrival of the Monk and [balanced] Psionics will be celebrated as well! (and I thought I was excited about the PH2).

I would like to see Gnolls, they are one of my favourite monstrous races. Though, I'll admit wouldn't want to see many of those others since I would rather have Psionic-oriented races instead.

We know that the Minotaurs are going to be in PHBIII, so it seems the possibility of other PHBIII races being in that list exists. So I now put forth the question to the masses, which of these races do you think will make it into the PHBIII?!?

I'd say its a rather small chance and could be closer to coincidence.

Gnolls were probably mentioned because they're in a Dragon article. Goblins and Orcs had to get mentioned because they're rather prominent in 3.5e Eberron. Earlier this week we got told kobolds are too powerful so we shouldn't expect to see versions of them in Dragon anytime soon.

Personally I'd have expected mention on Githzerai and how they fit into Eberron if we were going to get clues as to what was in the PHB3 in the EPG. We know for a fact a gith race (if not both) is in PHB3. How Githzerai fit into Eberron is dead easy (even easier then genasi) so I find their absence telling.

If any of those besides the Minotaur are in PHB3, it'll just be the Gnoll. For one reason, it's continuing the trend of putting Dragon races in PHBs & PGs that started with the Warforged & Minotaur, and that everyone expects will continue with the Shadar-kai.

The other reason being that the only reason Goblins, Orcs, and Kobolds were mentioned at all is because they're relatively important to Eberron. After all, Orcs and the Goblinoids were mentioned in the FRPG's supporting cast section, and they didn't make it to the PHB2 or EPG, did they?

That, and I'm anti-including a small race just to fill some quota. Halflings and Gnomes were in the first two PHBs because they're important/traditional/crazy fanboys would burn down WotC if they weren't in. If WotC can come up with a good hook for another small race, sure add it in. But don't do it just because of some ridiculous notion that every PHB has to have a small race.

Sounds like the 'supporting' role they gave genasi are the same that existed for the race in 3.5.

They existed in 3.5 Eberron, were made reference to the thing is no one knew why they existed. Some were born of human parents who conceived, gave birth, or lived within a manifest zone of a plane too long. Some were born when a certain plane was coterminous. But not all children conceived/born during these extraplanar alignments are genasi and sometimes they were born when no connection to any sort of plane could be detected.

Genasi were a magical anomoly that seemed to have some correlation to the cycle of the planes, but no hard and fast causes could be determined, they were just 'one of those things that happen' in a magical world.

If all those classic monstrous races were made playable in the PH3, I know at least four players who will pick it up the day it comes out. This woulld be the sort of thing folks describe as 'EPIC WIN.'

EPIC WIN would be an understatement. Certainly in an Eberron campaign such a book would prove to be awesome. Ive already had loads of goblin and orc NPCs interact with the party so to have one as a player character would be great ! :D

Gnolls are in the Eberron Supporting Cast page. They mention that there's some kind of Gnoll Nation too!

Oddly enough, I didn't see anything on how Drow fit into Eberron though. Considering that I wasn't in 3.xE long enough to try Eberron... All I know is that they live in jungles in Xen'drik and that they probably fight Yuan-Ti a lot.

I love the fact drow didn't get a 'Supporting Cast' mention in the Player's Guide. They are the legendary dark elves of the savage southern continent. According to the 'Continuing Tales of Killian ir'Westas' (My favorite series! It's featured in the Khoranberg Chronicle, so it's gotta be true!), they shoot purple fire from their hands, worship heathen gods, and try to kill anyone who approaches them. :D

Well, it's my guess (based on that list at least) that Goblins, Kobolds and Orcs would be in the PH3; whilst Gnolls would appear in the Dragon Magazine Annual Volume 1 (I'm surprised nobody's brought-up DMA1 yet, at least from what I've seen in these forums). That's my point-of-view, anyway

The neutral Gnoll tribes are the peacekeeper and law enforcement of the monstrous nation of Droaam. They also hire their services out as bounty hunters and mercenaries.

Drow are going to be detailed in the Eberron Campaign Setting. The player's guide is written from the point of view of things the average player/character should know. If you'll notice, a lot of important NPCs (King Kaius, Cardinal Krozen, Vol, etc) are not explictly mentioned and neither are their dark secrets. The Age of Demons is described as a myth and there is no concrete explanation given regarding the fall of the Giant or Goblin empires or details on the secrets and cultures of Xen'Drik and Sarlonna.

That's for the DM to know and everyone else to find out.

the trend of putting Dragon races in PHBs & PGs that started with the Warforged & Minotaur

How is that a trend? One Dragon race winding up in a PH and a setting's PG updating another (and one that happens to be rather key to the setting) hardly constitutes a trend.

Sometimes I am uncertain as to whether I should despise or be amused by the way these forums seem to lead people to cling to tiny little molecules of information and spin them into elaborate omens of what the gaming future clearly(!!!1!!one!1eleven) holds for us. (Another of my favorite recent examples: Lyk, omg, half-giants and thri-keen mentioned in a region entry! Darksun 2010 for sure gaiz. NO WAI, Dragonlance contest and anniversary! Dragonlance 2010 4 sho!!!!lawl)

...and non-exclusive (every other race) race articles...

Wait, when was the gnoll republished? They're mentioned in the EPG, but that's no guarantee they'll be in the PH3.

Regardless, as good as Dragon magazine is, it's been unabashedly a testing ground for mechanics in future publications. From illusion powers to classes and races, it's all kind of a playtest with some nice artwork & fluff. I don't think DDI was ever meant to be the dumping ground for lots of game pieces that didn't fit into paper publications.

He's saying that it can get republished because, unlike the revenant, its not labeled "exclusive content".

It sort of seems like we are getting revenants, assassins, necromancy powers and other things specifically because they might not fit in any other book.

Keep in mind that the Playing Gnolls article in Dragon was written by Keith Baker, the creator of Eberron. He also wrote an article in Dragon on the City of Greywall in Droaam (where non-chaotic evil savage Gnolls can be found in Eberron).

So its not surprising they got a mention in the EPG.

I wouldn't read too much into the presence or absence of certain races in the EPG.

Everyone who's familiar with Eberron realizes that most of the races mentioned in that chapter were mentioned because of their established role in the setting.

The presence of Kobolds was a bit strange, in my opinion, seeing as they had very little importance in 3E Eberron. The absence of Drow, a published playable race with a clear role in the setting, was a bit annoying. Metagame knowledge be damned, they deserved at least a blurb for players interested in playing a drow.

All of the PH2 races were present, regardless of past roles, for obvious reasons. The Genasi entry seemed unneeded, as they are extremely rare and have no established role. I can see, though, why they got an entry with their being a published player race.

Any new races will not be in the Dragon Annual. New Races and Classes are only in the Player Guides. (PHB's and Settings)

I have not seen anything to dispute this as it was the official statement from the first year that this new edition had been released.

Perhaps technically, your right, but it is at a different level than the books. DDi is material that is "extra" for those that want more than what is offered in the books, or to be more precise, most likely get it before it is in the books.

I know that DDi has improved a bit since the days of the free trail. (actually, did that ever really happen?) Since the development has been more focused, the bits and pieces have gelled and the CB (I always think of the radio when I see this abbr) has been released.

It still not worth a monthly fee, nor is it comparable to the MMO structure that it is modeled after.

The mags on the stands were, In My Humble Opinion, of a better quality than the preview and musings of the online articles within DDi. You could also keep the suckers around and use them later on.

I don't doubt that there are a few good pieces within those web pages, some material that most likely won't make it to the other books (or only into the Annual), but it seems more the exception than the rule.

Your paying for advertising, not a magazine. At least on the newsstand, the advertisements were from other companies.

So, Kalashtar and Doppleganger are in EPG.

The Gnoll and Orc shouldn't make the PHB3, Minotaur is in, as well as at least one Gith. I think the small race is gonna be the Dromite, though there is a want (left over from the horrible 3.5 Sorcerer dragon blood source of power fluff) for the Kobold.

Thoughts?

Thoughts? Please for the love of (insert favorite word here), no small race in the PHB3. Just because the two most popular/traditional small races were in PHB1 & 2, it does not mean that every single PHB need one. Just because FRPG had 2 new races, everyone thought EPG would have 2, but it didn't. Break the cycle!

And since the Gnoll needs to be reworked almost as badly as the Minotaur, I think it's has a very good chance of being included.

Gnolls are pretty cool in Eberron as a player race, thematically. They're a pile of monkey **** mechanically in 3e, but the 4e treatment is alright. I'd like to see it get a reprint in a future PH, just so we can have the full treatment of class-specific feats for the race that others get.

You do know you're in an Eberron thread, a setting where Orcs were the first druids in the world. Who in conjunction with a hobgoblin empire saved the whole world from an extraplanar invasion from the far realm while humans were still mastering that 'fire' thing, right?

They might not be your heroes, but that doesn't mean that they can't be our heroes.

You know, like how Dragonlance made a Minotaur (Kaz) one of histories greatest heroes, stood beside Huma, fought a god.

Oh but you don't think they're heroic enough, so lets just pull more races out of whole cloth instead of building on what we have.
