| #1zagora_01Jan 22, 2011 15:48:01 | According to the dragon issue for this month, there is an article about eladrin knights that will come out. Since this is the last week of the month, I'm assuming it will be next week. The flavor is that these knights protect the Court of Stars by using sword and spell. So, Any ideas how they will pull this off? Knights that use Arcane and work with Eladrins. MMMMM |
| #2Janx_14Jan 22, 2011 18:19:38 | Stances with the Arcane keyword, one of which probably teleports the target. |
| #3zagora_01Jan 22, 2011 19:45:25 | I wonder if there will be a feat similar to Intelligent blademaster. If they give the arcan keyword to the knight's attacks, that is going to open up a whole slew of options |
| #4HaldrikJan 22, 2011 19:45:43 | Very curious about this build. If it intends to be the 'Eladrin fighting style', I hope it somehow benefits from Dex-Int, or perhaps Cha-Int. I know it will have awesome flavor. I hope the mechanics synergize appropriately. |
| #5undraveJan 22, 2011 20:40:09 | Maybe its a Swordmage E-build. Lots of redundant fluff, half the choice of the original (because its Arcane/Martial) and some lame racial limitation on it like 'Must be Fey' or something. Either that or its five pages of fluff on the military traditions of the Eladrin (like what kind of trainign exercice or what uniforms they wear) that ends with three feat nobody would ever take and two useless powers for a class no one suspected. |
| #6MaximumHavocJan 22, 2011 22:25:51 | i am just wondering when they are finally going to fix the eladrin weapon proficiency from longsword to rapier, as it should be (imnsho). |
| #7zagora_01Jan 23, 2011 2:44:53 | i am just wondering when they are finally going to fix the eladrin weapon proficiency from longsword to rapier, as it should be (imnsho). Please don't say this too loudly. This is not the way it should be. The rapier was introduced as the bladesinger's weapon of choice in 3.5. Before that it has always been the longsword (as it should be). I hated it when they attributed the rapier to the bladesinger. It ruined the class for me. |
| #8HaldrikJan 23, 2011 6:45:57 | i am just wondering when they are finally going to fix the eladrin weapon proficiency from longsword to rapier, as it should be (imnsho). It would be cool if they could use any heavy blade, but use their racial Int (or their highest ability score) to represent magically wielding the sword, instead of Str. |
| #9MaximumHavocJan 23, 2011 9:11:28 | eladrin are a dex strong race. as a light weapon, the rapier is more dex based than the longsword. it just makes sense to me. also, fluffwise, i can more easily envision eladrin excelling at the art of the rapier. |
| #10zagora_01Jan 23, 2011 12:21:40 | Since the start of Dnd, elves have always been about the longsword. For me, it represents the more faerie essense of the elves as the longsword is a weapon of the middle and dark ages. The rapier is a weapon of the rennasaunce. I don't invision the elves in a rennasaunce world. |
| #11MaximumHavocJan 23, 2011 13:48:18 | in the opinion of many, the period of the renaissance represents a zenith in the arts. in that vein, i can easily envision elves and eladrin as part of a renaissance-esque world. in fact, given that elves and eladrin are popularly regarded as more advanced in the arts, i could envision a world where the elves and eladrin are enjoying a period of renaissance, while the other races remain in a medieval age. |
| #12MaximumHavocJan 23, 2011 14:03:02 | Since the start of Dnd, elves have always been about the longsword . . . . since before the start of d&d, dwarves have been associated with hammers and axes, but hammers and picks make much more sense, culturally. i don't allow all sacred cows to restrain my imagination. |
| #13lokiareJan 23, 2011 18:20:01 | I don't put much stock in the Renaissance myself because it was brought about by the criminal family that became the Italian mafia... That aside a rapier is a very thin long sword, so it does make as much sense as a regular longsword... |
| #14kairirosesJan 23, 2011 18:31:41 | I'm personally hoping that this is a new "build" for the Knight which will allow a Knight to choose Arcane stances and such, and I'm hoping that the only requirement for choosing this build will be training in Arcana (or something along those lines) and not "must be an eladrin", "must be fey", "must use a longsword/rapier", or anything like that 'cause I rather like the idea that anyone could learn the Eladrin "Arcane Fighter" techniques and use them with any weapon they feel like. |
| #15HaldrikJan 23, 2011 19:32:35 | eladrin are a dex strong race. as a light weapon, the rapier is more dex based than the longsword. it just makes sense to me. also, fluffwise, i can more easily envision eladrin excelling at the art of the rapier. I mean, Eladrin are a magical race, wielding weapons by means of magic. In that way, using Int - sorta like mage hand or an enhancement bonus. Int or whichever ability modifier they use for their magic powers. |

| #17kairirosesJan 24, 2011 6:27:15 | i wonder whether this announced build is the manifestation of the previously announced bladesinger. I can't pretend to know what's up WotC's sleeve, but it would seem to me that the "Sword Guard of Astrazalian" is probably meant to be an Essentials-style Defender Swordmage and that the "Bladesinger" that is supposed to be in the Neverwinter book is probably meant to be a Striker style Swordmage. If this is the case then I think I rather prefer this way of doing the Swordmage instead of them being a seperate class. Since the "Sword Guard of Astrazalian" are appearing in a Class Acts: Knight article, we can assume that they are most probably a new build for the Knight. Likewise, it's my hope that the Bladesinger will either be a build for the Slayer (or possibly a sub-class for the Wizard [like how the Mage is a sub-class]) that uses both melee strikes and Close Blast powers (like the Hexblade.) |
| #18kairirosesJan 27, 2011 6:19:26 | [rant] So it looks like the one article I've cared the most about (the one about the Sword Guard of Astrazalian) isn't going to come out until the very last day of the month (if then.) I am sorely dissapointed by this whole "the content calendar doesn't actually tell you $&%^ " approach WotC is going with now. I've been checking the site several times a day every day this month ever since this article was first mentioned on the first or second day of January. That's how badly I've been looking forward to this. And if the Content Calendar actually gave us some clue when stuff would be coming out like it used to then I wouldn't wind up associating checking the website with dissapointment. I could've simply looked at the Conent Calendar and figured out that I should check the site on the 12th for the Vecna article, the 14th for the Primal Spirits article, and the 19th for the Strongholds article. Please WotC... give us the article later today or early tomorrow (so that my gaming group that meets on Fridays can discuss it.) [/rant] |
| #19robertread3Jan 28, 2011 22:04:17 | hey its out no need for ranting anymore ! |
| #20kletian999Jan 29, 2011 12:46:01 | There is a need when the article is crap. 1 meaningful addition to the Essential Fighter At wills, a handful of Swordmage utility powers with the martial keyword and fighter classes tacked on, near meaningless encouragement to dump STR for INT, and a whole article that designed around a single race/class combo. And they said Arcane power 2 would only get 2% usage! |

And they said Arcane power 2 would only get 2% usage! So where's the Arcane in this? You mean they took Swordmage utilities, slapped the Martial keyword on them and gave them to Essential Knights?? Good god who the heck is making those articles?! Where are the articles that FIX THINGS that needs to be fixed? |
| #22Lord_VentnorJan 29, 2011 14:32:25 | It's Dragon Magazine. This is the one place where they can stick niche builds like Eladrin Knights. I personally liked it, although I also wouldn't mind lifting the race restrictions on the powers in the article, maybe instead replacing them with the requirement for being trained in Arcana, implying that you'd have to have the proper background if you wanted to use them. Eladrin would still be favored in that instance, because of their Eladrin Education racial feature allowing them to snag arcana without need for a background. |

And they said Arcane power 2 would only get 2% usage! Yes that's exactly what I mean. All but one of them can be mapped effect to effect for an existing SM utility. I underscored the race/class thing because such an article "concept" has been frequently described as "auto-rejected" whenever the Dragon editor posted what kind of submissions they were after, and they are truly meaningless to all but a small fraction of the playerbase. The game elements aren't even inspiring stoywise because they are identical to Swordmages. |
| #25kairirosesJan 30, 2011 13:29:19 | Well... the article wasn't exactly written as I would have, but I rather like it nonetheless. In fact, on Friday on of the PCs in the home game that I'm DMing decided to swap out one of his characters for an Eladrin Knight using the new stuff from the article. (In fact he's playing the 10 year old son of one of his characters from an earlier campaign - an Eladrin Swordmage. So we're counting him as being Small.) As for the "identical to swordmages" thing... well, duh. The pre-Essentials version of the Swordmage class combined together several different "fighter / wizard" stereotypes. Post-Essentials we're essentially getting those archetypes seperated back out (like they should be.) And keep in mind that the new options for the Knight are basically just Eladrin Knights who have trained at increasing their "teleporti-ness". Edit: changed "weren't" into "we're"... was rather tired when I wrote the original post |
| #26kletian999Jan 30, 2011 18:27:20 | Well... the article wasn't exactly written as I would have, but I rather like it nonetheless. Sorcerers and Warlocks are both "People that cast spells to make other people fall down" yet there are surprisingly few cases where their powers are even close, let alone mechanically identical. Even the Psion, with spells near identical to warlock ones, has a different attack stat, lower damage/effect ratio, and the augment mechanic to change it up. What I'm saying is if they're going to write an article, at least make 5 original powers instead of 1 original power and 4 copies. |
| #27undraveJan 30, 2011 22:16:40 | So does this mean I can now pitch them my article about Warforged Warlocks and Drow Bards to boost my current PCs and they won't auto-reject them? -.- |
| #28undraveJan 30, 2011 22:28:35 | So does this mean I can now pitch them my article about Warforged Warlocks and Drow Bards to boost my current PCs and they won't auto-reject them? Its good to know where they stand. When was the last time DDi had an article written by an outsider anyway? |
| #29lokiareJan 31, 2011 3:09:47 | So does this mean I can now pitch them my article about Warforged Warlocks and Drow Bards to boost my current PCs and they won't auto-reject them? I don't know. You can look at each articles "about the author" section and see. I bet its been a long time since they've had more than a single article or two done by someone like that... |
