Just a simple question:

When will the Essentials content be added to Character Builder, if they will at all? Will it be by the end of the year? When the last Essentials have been published? Just out of curiousity. I'm not impatient, I would just like to know.

I liken essentials to the 2E "skills and powers" books, and the book of nine swords for 3.5E. Basically it means the end of the current edition with a kind of live playtest of the new 5E rules. which means they suck...

I don't see it.  It seems more like they are just going to pile on new versions of classes, and with liberal use of errata, they've kept the system more or less balanced.

The other thing with a book coming out next year that allows full intagration between 4th and essentails that basically kills the notion that this is 5th ed test bed. I think 4th will be around with some changes for at least 2 more years.

To put it another way, never. They are doing away with any support for the CB and putting a pale imitation on the web.

Nice assumption.  Now proof me or it's not true.

In theory.  I wouldn't bet on it though.

On November 16, Wizards of the Coast will launch a brand new  web-based version of the D&D Insider Character Builder. The current  downloadable version will remain functional, but will no longer be  available for download or updated with content after the new version  goes live. Here are the highlights of the new Character Builder:

  • New Design: Completely redesigned from top to bottom in Microsoft Silverlight as a robust character creation wizard.

  • No Download: The Character Builder is served from the D&D site

  • PC and Mac Compatible: Requires an Internet connection and Silverlight plug-in

  • Access is easy: Just enter the D&D site, log in, and launch the Character Builder from the Tool Box or the Character Builder tools page.

  • Characters in the Cloud: All characters you create are saved on our database. No need to save Character Builder files on your hard drive anymore.

  • File Import: You can easily import your character s created in the previous version to the new Character Builder.

  • Previous Data: Includes all character-building data you enjoyed in the previous versions.

  • New Data Releases: Dark Sun and D&D Essentials data will debut with the new version.

If you have any questions about the new Character Builder or your subscription, see the FAQ or contact a Wizards of the Coast Game Support representative.

Let's see, characters can't be saved on drive, need to be online to use, support for the offline client is gone...

Yep, never.

You can save them to your drive, though it takes a bit of fenageling.  Plus, they are promising export ability will be integrated (take the promise however you like).  Yes, you need to be online to use it.  And duh, of course they'll stop supporting the old tools (that's how they plan to entice people to maintain a sub instead of doing it for one or two months a year).

So yeah.  Prove it's a "pale imitation" or it's not true.

Pretty much no customization or house rules at launch with support for them being promised "soon" just like the Dark Sun support for the Char Builder?

Yes, they did.... it is for the online version, there is no new updates for the client.
