It means the Eladrin won't be all that great at being a Hexblade Warlock.  This is incredibly disappointing.

Charisma is the primary ability score of this class.

Eladrin will be great Hexblades.

Anyway, the Pact Weapon seems interesting. So you conjure a blade using your implement. Looks like the Hexblade has eaten the Soulknife, in a way.

I like the Blade of Annihilation, a 1 handed weapon that deals d12 damage? Heck yeah!

But the striker feature keys off of Dex, which the Eladrin has to trade to get Cha.  Hopefully a typo.

As for the Pact Weapon, it is cool, but no DIS kinda blows.

Hmmm, now can the hex blade create the basic pact weapon without holding an implement in the other hand? If not then it may be the first time a warlock needs to buy a non-bonus implement.

So you're one damage down from a Drow Hexblade.

Eladrin are still miles above Elf or Wilden Hexblades. Stating that they won't be great just isn't true.

As for DIS, it doesn't apply to weapon attacks. I'd imagine you just dismiss your Pact Blade and pull out another implement if you want to make implement attacks, and sheathe the implement to conjure your pact weapon when you want to make weapon attacks.

Kind of interesting that they've gotten ride of a Vanilla Warlock's Curse in favor of an ability score tied to the Pact you choose. I wonder if a Star Pact Hexblade will have a different ability when we see it this month.

For some reason the idea of a character summoning a sword from a rod just screams Jedi.

You have to be holding your implement and your weapon to use it so it not quite one handed but you could use pact blade for two weapon weilding or a pact spiked shield or the ever popular arcane implement.

probably not a typo from the recent Podcast i think the fey pact get a rapier like weapon and want to wear light armor both of which would fit Dex just right.

On first glance, I don't hate it.  Maybe I'll get forgotten kingdoms after all.

once again though this Hexblade dosen't play nice with the old warlocks feats since it does not have a lot of the class feature; including Warlock Curse, the various pacts, shadow walk and Eldritch Blast (a possible reason for the change to eldritch bolt?).

There are a few that still work; Sacrifice to Caphion, Starfire Womb and oddly if you multiclass Assassin you can get Shadow Walk back through the Cursed Shaddows Feat.

Why did they rename Eldritch Blast Eldritch Bolt? Is it because the Bolt is CHA only? Hopefully there will be an andendum some where that says "Count Eldritch Bolt as Eldritch Blast for any feat or paragon path requirments."

It also deals force damage.

I agree that I would rather they had received Eldritch Blast too, but that's the way this is. It isn't enough to make me dislike the Hexblade.

erdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Looks like bolt has a level though, so you can easily swap it for blast, which is nice. Sadly none of the other powers have levels(right now). This class looks pretty cool, the summoning is odd(wonder what the fey get), and not really my thing. But on the whole this appears to be the class I have wanted for a long time.

I've linked to this thread as the official Discussion Thread for this preview.

Excerpts
Heroes of the Forgotten Kingdom: Hexblade Warlock

Few people trust hexblades. Some of the greatest villains to plague the land have been hexblades.

Talk about this Preview in the Discussion Thread.

I still say let your races have a +2 to any 2 abilities they want (human excluded due to the feat/skill bonus), and forget the "limitations".

The whole idea behind it is that your character is not like the rest of the population, you are exceptional.  So you happen to be a very agile Dwarf, your bulky dwarven brothers made fun of you as a whelp...until the day you saved them by using almost super-"human" skills and agilty to slay the troll that surprised you while camping!

1) fun that many people, me too, thinked Hexblade was reasonable as a Warlock because of the "hexes" similar to the "curse", but thee's no curse in the Essential Hexblade

2) IMHO Dex is used instead od Int to give more sense to the stealth and thievery skills

3) so the Blade of Annihilation is a Heavy Blade, and if the pact weapon for fey hexblades are, as someone posted, Light Blades, it seems Hexblades are blade-users: the fear of many, from the Swordmage-sword thing
I just think a blase of annihilation+implement is a better combination that to use some of the other weapon in which the hexblade is competent (swords, picks, ...)

4) summoning in an essential class? I thinked summoning was too complate for this book: I don't remember if wizards get summons too

5) the Hexblade finds place near the essentialized tiefling -> easy bett of tiefling to have tiefling's alternat stat bonus as dex or con
cha dex = good rogues and assassins
cha con = good hellocks, bards, ardents and battleminds
which seems more reasonable? which will we get in the next races update?

Something interesting that i noticed is that they seem to have changed the fluff of the pact to almost the opposite of what it was in earlier 4E.  No longer are you indebted to a mystical, powerful entity.  Now, it seems like warlocks have exploited and tricked these beings into giving them power at no cost, and actually hold power OVER their pact associates!

I have waited for this preview for a looonnnggg time. I love the flavor of warlocks, and was praying the Essentials warlock would have a melee option. My prayers were answered, but at a cost.

You have to have an implement in one hand and the weapon in the other = NO dual implement caster

No Prime shot = No called shot damage.

no warlock curse = No Int to curse damage at Epic.

Secondary ability score damage once per round = a weak triker machanic. Slayers get it on all weapon attacks. It seems they still didn't try and make the warlock a good damage dealing striker. Am I missing something? edit - this is not just once per round, so it is the same as the slayer machanic which isn't that bad after all.

Wait... wouldn't Dual Implement still work?

"When you use a power associated with your pact weapon and the power has both the weapon and the implement keyword, you are considered to be wielding both your pact weapon and your implement for the purpose of feats and other game elements."

What does this really mean?

That could make for a neat backstory if you had one of each with the same pact in your party. Assuming they get more powerful summons later on, a warlock could have made its pact and when a love one finds out, they become a hexblade intent on having power over the entity the warlock made its pact with.

Heck, I'd consider doing that right now with one of the groups I'm in if it wasn't for our lack of a leader.

I don't think so, It states the pac weapon SHARES your impliment's properties, enhancements, crit effects and daily powers. Wouldn't that imply the blade is not an implement on its own?

Elric thought he had mastered Stormbringer too.
