| #1praionMay 21, 2009 8:35:01 | So, lets see what we have in Primal Transforming into animals (Druid) / Transforming parts of yourself (Warden, Bearwarrior) / Controling Elements (Druid, Warden) / Infusing of onesself with spirits (Barbarian, Warden) / Calling forth Spirits (Shaman Zone Spells and Companion) / Attacking the Enemy with Spirits (Shaman), Summoning Animals (Druid), what is still missing. More plant control, creating things from spiritual Energy or infusing items/things with spirits, directly handling the 'primal spirit' of others, becoming spiritlike (Danny Phantom oO ), 'Blighter Druid things', Primal Archer i can't think of anything else and i'm not really sure about Divine mechanics so someone else can do this please ? |
| #2johnthedm7000May 21, 2009 17:20:23 | Well, one idea I have for primal is that of the Witch-someone who uses the magic of the primal spirits to transform others, and perhaps lay down some curses. ![]() |
| #3psk20May 21, 2009 17:31:17 | I think they'll make a class which is only for warforged and allows them to transform into a robo-gorilla. |
| #4OrzelMay 21, 2009 17:45:15 | I still see a semi-transformation style for Divine. You gain the the aspects and abilities of an angel, a devil, marut, or some other powerful immortal. It would be an agile defender who darted across the battlefield with their natural abilty to fly. They bash their enemies with the powers of their host immortal (angel-radiant, devil-fire, marut-thunder). |
| #5LordDreadmanMay 21, 2009 17:54:30 | I think it could be beneficial to consider the classes by remembering the theme for PH3 (as mentioned in Design and Development for the Monk). Supposedly the theme for PH3 is "Fighting the threats of the Far Realm." Just like PH1 was a "This world is a death trap" book, and PH2 is the "The war between the Gods and the Primordials was freakin' crazy" book, keeping the theme in mind would go a long way, I think. Yours, Lord Dreadman |
| #6SongSooGumbupMay 21, 2009 17:56:29 | Since the primal power source is the power of the Earth and its inhabitants, a geomancer might fit in. It has a strong connection to the Earth, but it's more connected to the dirt, forests, mountains, and rivers than other classes. If a druid can summon storms without stepping on the elemental power source, then this might work. |
| #7Janx_14May 21, 2009 17:57:44 | What i'd like for a primal class is sort of a "savage hurler" (no that would not be the name), but a sort of tribal hunter who makes thrown weapons his main tool. Right now they are mostly just auxilary for every other class. Toss in some voodoo magic or something. |
| #8crystixMay 21, 2009 18:01:37 | definitely people with the ability to channel divine energy like wizards, warlocks, and sorcerers channel elemental power |
| #9undraveMay 21, 2009 18:09:32 | Maybe some Divine ranged option could be seen... though I'd prefer that as a Cleric build in Divine Power. definitely people with the ability to channel divine energy like wizards, warlocks, and sorcerers channel elemental power Isn't that an Invoker? Warlocks don't channel Elemental Power. |
| #10crystixMay 21, 2009 18:55:26 | eh, they might not channel ELEMENTAL power, but they do channel vast amounts of power through their bodies, especially CONlocks, without having to ask a lot. my only problem with the divine classes is that the fluff is always saying that your power is always to be used in your gods' will; sometimes that's a little too narrow: "buuuut meloraaa!!, I'm sure these wolves have something to do with that beholder!" I always wondered if a god would just say "no power for you!" plus the evel 30 problem, you're lv. 30, just 3 lvs away from orcus, the demon who kills gods, and you're still using power just from your gods, that's like having a forty pound tick on your back. But thankfully I was assured by the demigod epic destiny that it was eventually your own divine spark that fueled your powers long tangent short: if wizards can shoot fireballs without asking a primordial, a class should be able to shoot holy lightning without asking either. |
| #11LordArchaonMay 21, 2009 19:10:07 | Again here, look closely at the minotaur of the cover, we are getting at least one RUNE MAGIC class |
| #12jim_darkmagic_fanboy_dupMay 21, 2009 19:25:03 | Again here, look closely at the minotaur of the cover, we are getting at least one RUNE MAGIC class Or the Rune is a new sub-set of Magic Items. Perhaps the rune is innately magical and can be picked up and placed on different weapons... I doubt this is the case but it does showcase how we cannot make any assumptions. |

But byt the rulebooks, the divine characters aren't getting their powers from their gods....well not completely at least. It is said in the PHB for clerics(and I'm pretty sure for the rest of the divine classes) that divine power can not be blocked off after the ritual to gain access to it has been performed. They are basically channeling the power of the astreal sea I believe, the gods are just the gatekeepers who choose who get access to that power initially and perhaps fonts for the more specilized abilities.....at least that was my interpretation. |
| #14LordArchaonMay 21, 2009 19:38:13 | Or the Rune is a new sub-set of Magic Items. Perhaps the rune is innately magical and can be picked up and placed on different weapons... I doubt this is the case but it does showcase how we cannot make any assumptions. I will never understand why this is the tendency of ALL the community. No assumptions. So what the heck is the Future Releases forum for? Do you think they'd show-case new magic items in a book which is about new classes? I would understand if we were talking about Adventurer's Vault but come on, we got glowing red eyes matched by glowing red-runes. And runes are both thematically and mechanically something that the game was missing. EDIT: they can make two classes out of runes, the heavy armored guy we see in the cover and a controller specialized in glyphs of protection/destruction and so on, another big chunk of magic that if you noticed, they have been hiding from us for too long in this edition. |
| #15jim_darkmagic_fanboy_dupMay 22, 2009 0:01:45 | I will never understand why this is the tendency of ALL the community. No assumptions. So what the heck is the Future Releases forum for? Actually your statement was made as if you know we're getting a Rune based class, or 2, which you do not (and even if you did know, then you're probably breaking some NDAs by telling us ). At any rate, my point was that I have no problems with 'I think...' statements but I do have a problem declaring something to be fact when we all know there are other logical conclusions to the posed problem. This is a forum for speculation, any claim declaring something to be fact must be supported with facts. |
| #16LordArchaonMay 24, 2009 9:38:49 | Actually your statement was made as if you know we're getting a Rune based class, or 2, which you do not (and even if you did know, then you're probably breaking some NDAs by telling us Well, of course I don't pretend to know for sure, but I've given out and can give out more facts: - there is no reason to believe (no previous case) that a cover of a PHB would showcase particular magic items. - the minotaur's eyes are glowing in the same way and same color as the runes, giving a strong hint that the runes are connected more to the character than to the items - runes/symbols/glyphs are themes-mechanics (note, the two things) that haven't been touched yet and that still haven't been covered to the level of entire classes by any previous edition, so doing it would be original, fun, and attractive, without the risk associated to something completely alien (like Incarnum was). So it would make people happy. ... So it is highly, highly probable that the Divine class(es) in PHB3 will make use of runes/symbols/glyphs. |
| #17thescalesoffateMay 24, 2009 13:41:20 | It is highly, highly probable that I have psychic powers and can predict the contents of the next PHB3. But I'm not sharing. |
| #18MarandahirMay 24, 2009 14:14:44 | Rune magic is the domain of Artificers. It says so in the MM2, under the Stone Giant entry. I quote: "Arcana DC 30:: Stone Giants are artistic and craft-oriented, especially with stone. Runecarvers use arcane lore to craft runes of ancient magic upon surfaces. With these spells set in stone, they smite foes. The art of rune magic may have originated with ancient stone giants, although dwarf artificers surely disagree." Note that not only does the lore blurb relate Rune Magic to artificers, it explicitly says its Arcane. So it's not in the PH3. Note that the Minotaur could possibly be an Artificer, since EVERYTHING IS CORE now. Artificers will get support in AP2, so there's no reason to think that Rune Magic should be anything but Artificer's work. It's probably just the less Magitech version of the Artificer that's for the core setting. However, that's certainly a melee-oriented artificer, if he is one, while ranged-implement powers were emphasised in the playtest article. Perhaps a Hybrid Artificer/Fighter? |
| #19psk20May 24, 2009 15:29:16 | Note that not only does the lore blurb relate Rune Magic to artificers, it explicitly says its Arcane. Very good point, but I don't think this is completely conclusive. It's highly suggestive, but it doesn't utterly convince me that there won't be a rune-based class in PHB3. Just because stone giant rune carvers and artificers use the arcane power source, doesn't mean beyond a shred of doubt that there isn't also a divine or primal rune-using class. Rangers and bards both use bows. Warlocks and divine characters both obtain their powers from supernatural beings. Rune use might be strictly arcane, but then it might span more than one primal source instead. |
| #20LordArchaonMay 24, 2009 16:11:28 | Rune magic is the domain of Artificers. It says so in the MM2, under the Stone Giant entry. I quote: It could be a hybrid artificer/fighter, but I still think it's probably that (maybe by not calling them runes but glyphs or sigils or anything), they're going to base a divine class on these things, following the community's desire for a more cryptic and mysterious form of divine manifestation. My point again is, why would they showcase a character that is not using a new class? |
| #21MarandahirMay 24, 2009 16:16:55 | I can see it as a glyph or sigil mystic. As long as we don't suddenly start creating a divine Rune Mage, I'm okay. I was just trying to point out that Rune Magic exists, and it's not Divine, Psionic, or Primal. I'd like to see the Divine-Archer (Miko?), Exorcist Priest/Monk, and vudun primal witch-doctor sort of class as well, archetypes unfilled as of yet. |
| #22ignizMay 25, 2009 6:40:58 | Wu-Jen as a primal controller? Be nice to have a primal controller that didn't have wild shape attached. Something like the scout as a Primal Striker? More akin to the Rogue, a good alternative to the Barbarian. A Bow using Divine class would be nice. |
| #23praionMay 25, 2009 15:10:56 | About the "Templar" Right now, we don't have a high armored (like Plate) wearing Striker have we ? This is a mechanical concept that is stall lacking ? Something like Striker-Paladin. I don't really now what to do with the class but i imagine it like a Avenger but instead of beeing divine protected and mobile they will be a moving fortress. Something like Juggernaut from X-Men maybe... |
| #24BelorinMay 25, 2009 23:20:56 | I had a similar idea for an armored striker; Crusader – striker o Armor: cloth, leather, hide, chainmail o Weapons: simple melee, military melee, simple ranged o Implements: holy symbol Also I had an idea for a lightly armored leader; Saint – leader o Armor: cloth o Weapons: simple melee o Implements: rods, staffs For Primal I got nothing. Bel |
| #25askanipsionMay 25, 2009 23:34:19 | For Primal my guesses are: Witch (controller?) Shugenja (Leader) For Psionic: Telepath (controller) Empath (leader) a defender who uses psionic auras For Divine: Archivist (controller?) Rune Warrior (defender) |
| #26CaericMay 25, 2009 23:56:31 | Crusader and Archivist wouldn't be bad Divine classes. Both offer a unique twist to the theme; Crusaders are warriors first (moreso than Paladins), and Archivists are just a very different kind of Divine class altogether. Plus, if made to be like the v3.5 ones, they'd be the second class to have a spellbook (or prayerbook, as the case would be). Primal... I'd lean perhaps towards Incarnum. Totemist, Incarnate and Soulborn (or whatever the incarnum paladin-wannabe was called). They all channel spirits in a unique way, but in a very natural way. I'd lean to Totemist and Soulborn, since Incarnate always struck me as the middle ground. and is therefore more of a generic theme than a class concept. So I'll take a guess for the class line-up: Monk, Empath, Telepath (just a guess), Soulknife, Archivist, Crusader, Totemist, Soulborn. You guys can all call me on it if I'm wrong, whenever we find out. I can take it. |
| #27LFKMay 26, 2009 1:02:04 | It's also worth considering at this point that Shadow and Elemental have been rolled into other Power Sources (Illusions were going to be "saved" for a dedicated class, but AP gave us almost an entire class worth of Wizard illusion powers) so it's a good chance Primal has absorbed anything you might think of for an Elemental class, and Shadow has been split between Arcane and Divine. A Necromancer/pure-summoner "pet class" Divine quasi-ranged (back ranks at least) Striker would be new for the game (Beast Mastery rules, but 99% focused around your pet instead of tandem). I would like to see a Primal Ranged Striker with the heavy single-target DPR that the Sorcerer didn't get. The issue with Crusader is that it's basically Avenger in heavy armor (though frankly that's what I thought the Avenger was going to be in the first place) but then again that's the refrain for most of the Divine Power Source to begin with, so who knows. |
| #28McnancyMay 26, 2009 1:27:11 | Archivist could be cool: I see them as a scholor who uses a collection of Divine reliquary, obscure holy scriptures, and Divine words of power; no armor, no weapons, knowledge is their weapon and armor; having access and understanding of ancient mindboggling truths, they can bind and banish monsters of mystic origins. Their powers would sort of be like a mix of Incarnum (having and using items of power) and Truename magic (ancient lore of creation) |
| #29KoboldAvengerMay 26, 2009 10:12:10 | It's also worth considering at this point that Shadow and Elemental have been rolled into other Power Sources (Illusions were going to be "saved" for a dedicated class, but AP gave us almost an entire class worth of Wizard illusion powers) so it's a good chance Primal has absorbed anything you might think of for an Elemental class, and Shadow has been split between Arcane and Divine. A Necromancer/pure-summoner "pet class" Divine quasi-ranged (back ranks at least) Striker would be new for the game (Beast Mastery rules, but 99% focused around your pet instead of tandem). Shadow and Elemental are still around at the moment, there's "proof of concept" for those classes. |
| #30McnancyMay 26, 2009 12:25:54 | I could also see a Witch class bringing something new to the Primal table: They could focus more on the darker side of nature(not evil, just creepy); insects, nighttime & the Moon, fungus, Poison & Disease, fall & winter, the nitrogen cycle and all that. That could just be one side of them as well, the other build could focus on the more nurturing side of things; daytime and the Sun, medicine, virility, summer & spring, life from death and all that. |
