The powers its had in previous editions lead me to believe that it will be more suited for an Epic Destiny. Sort of like the transformation in the Demigod Epic Destiny. Though I'm not sure. What do you guys and gals think? Paragon Path or Epic Destiny? |
| #2ostrakonFeb 05, 2009 16:03:48 | I was really expecting it in Draconomicon 1, maybe they're saving it for when they do metallic dragons. Should be an easy houserule fix. Make its features revolve around getting Dragon Breath if you don't already have it, then pump it up. |
| #3ultimate_arcaneFeb 05, 2009 16:16:59 | I see your point. I didn't really think of it that way since in the previous editions it was about the Ability Score buffs AC buffs...and getting other Dragon-like features. That's what stood out about it to me. Not so much the breath weapon. |
| #4ranadielFeb 05, 2009 16:19:01 | If it does make the transition to 4ed, then it would most likely be a Sorcerer option. I'd honestly go with it being the "default" paragon path for the dragon magic sorcerers. |

I'd honestly go with it being the "default" paragon path for the dragon magic sorcerers. That's what I'd always thought of it as. A Sorcerer only option. Be a Sorcerer or take the Multiclass feat to get into it. |
| #6wizardmonFeb 05, 2009 16:46:42 | I would imagine that it would be an epic destiny, actually, especially if it gets wings. I do not think WotC would want to design a paragon path that gave breath weapons, as that would basicly be taking away one of the things of Dragonborn, and giving it to everyone. I feel that a Dragon Deciple would grow dragon wings, as flight like that is not an option for PC's yet. Also, we see an epic dragonborn get wings-- Maybe it IS Dragon destiny that gives wings. |
| #7CK.356Feb 05, 2009 16:59:45 | I do expect eventually a dragonborn ED that gives wings (like the dragonborn champion). |

That could be an at-will Utility you get from the Destiny. Gain a fly speed and hover equal to your speed. I like where this is going. :D Too bad it might not work that way. ![]() |

I think Ranadiel got it right: Dragon Disciple as a Sorcerer Paragon Path. It makes a ton of sense within the fluff of the Sorcerer (there's a Dragon Sorcerer build) and compared to the fluff of 3.5E's Dragon Disciple (which granted additional spells, clearly a "caster" benefit). FWIW, many of the Dragon Sorcerer encounter powers shown in the Sorcerer preview are described as magic "breath" attacks. Finally, I really hope they don't publish any player options in any Draconomicon books; I really don't like it when my players nose through DM books looking for player options. |

I do not think WotC would want to design a paragon path that gave breath weapons, as that would basicly be taking away one of the things of Dragonborn, and giving it to everyone. I can see Dragon Disciple as a PHB2 Epic Destiny designed for Dragonborn and sorcerers, which gives you dragon-like powers (such as flight and more frequent uses of your breath weapon). Especially if its destiny quest ends with the character turning into an actual dragon. (and/or if its capstone is the ability to polymorph into one) ![]() There might actually be both a Paragon Path (for sorcerers) and an Epic Destiny with this theme in mind. |
| #12DragoncatFeb 05, 2009 19:56:02 | Given the PHB2's transformation stuff, I'd be rather fond of a full-blown Daily "Dragon Apotheosis" power. Aka "Turn into a big-honking dragon (or just a dragon, if size is a problem) for the encounter, all blast powers are enhanced, and the enemy is warmed for the rest of their lives." :D |
| #13nihzletFeb 05, 2009 20:00:37 | Posted by Ranadiel: My thoughts exactly. I'd actually be surprised if it's not a sorcerer paragon path(or maybe epic destiny) in PHB2. |
| #14KalorusFeb 06, 2009 8:09:43 | I think we might see it being split into both a Paragon Path and and an Epic destiny with the Epic Destiny giving the Draconic Apotheosis bonuses of wings and/or stat boosts. I'm not sure what that would leave for the Paragon Path though, i only say there will be one because there will almost certainly be a PP specifically for Dragon Magic sorcerer's... the Sorcerer is already going to be getting a few breath weapons from the start with attacks such as Tempest Breath, Lightning Breath and Poisonous Exhalation, so possibly a Dragon Disciple paragon path would give bonuses to Blast attacks. |
| #15glimeral_dupFeb 06, 2009 12:05:11 | Given how Iconic dragons are in DnD; I honestly believe there is ample room to justify a Dragon Deciple PP, and a Half-Dragon/Demi-Dragon ED (of which I like the name Dragon-blood Champion)... both of which should be open only to Sorcerers and Dragonborn. In addition, I do not see Wings as being problematic if handled correctly. For example: Wings (11th level): You gain wings which allow limited flight. At 11th level, your wings are only strong enough to allow you to glide safely from any height. Dragon Flight (12th level Utility): Daily (Special); Minor - You gain a Fly Speed of 8. Sustain Minor. Flight during combat is strenuous. Once per day, per point of Constitution bonus - you can recharge this power during combat by expending an encounter power as a Free action. Overland Flight (16th level) You gain an overland flight speed of 8. Except for its level, and ability to be recharged - this power is nearly identical to the 16th level Wizard power. The fact that you have to give up another Encounter power to use this power more than once/day seems relatively balanced IMO, as that is one less "Attack" the Dragon Deciple will be making that encounter - just for the opportunity to have unfeathered movement (no pun intended). Regarding "Dragon Apothesis" - I think this would make for an excellent "Immortality" option for the Half-Dragon/Demi-Dragon... Dragon Apothesis: Your inner dragon hatches from its humanoid shell, transforming you into the True and Mighty dragon that you are. Your size becomes Gargantuan, and you gain the Attacks, powers, and features of a True Dragon of your chosen Type (adjusted for being a 30th level creature). You retain your own Hit Points (adjusted for becoming a Solo Creature), and ability scores (if greater than those of the advanced dragon you become). In addition, you retain all Paragon Path features, while gaining the Class features of an NPC of your class. Finally, you retain the use of 1 At-Will, 2 Encounter, 2 Daily, and 2 Utility powers of your choice, regardless of source (class, paragon path, power-swap feat etc). Among the mightiest of all Wyrms, you may then choose to lord over your own realm; proclaim yourself King among Dragons; or travel the planes. Few dragons (and even fewer mortals) will stand against you regardless of the decisions you make. |
| #16johnthedm7000Feb 06, 2009 12:54:36 | I too hope that there is a PP analogous to the Dragon Disciple that provides limited flight (perhaps gliding at 11th and overland flight at 16th, or a utility power that provides it) along with breath weapon goodness and perhaps claws or a bite attack. In 3.0 and 3.5 the Dragon Disciple was often used as a foundation for Sorcerer's who preferred to "mix it up" in melee, as it granted natural attacks, natural armor, and a considerable boost to strength. Seeing a dragon disciple PP that provided that same option to Dragon Sorcerers (who are already slightly more capable in melee than wild magic sorcerers due to the Str bonus to AC, which encourages melee combat) while providing dragoney goodness would please me greatly. all hail the disciple!By the way-Glimeral that idea for "Dragon Apothesis" is absolutely full of win-the sort of awesome that all epic destinies should aspire to-becoming a god (demigod), a master of the arcane (archmage), a student of every sort of discipline (eternal seeker), or a crazy ass trickster on par with Loki or Coyote (deadly trickster), or turning into a freaking dragon. |
| #17glimeral_dupFeb 06, 2009 13:59:44 | I didnt think of overland flight... Added. |
| #18MindWandererBFeb 06, 2009 14:53:39 | "Dragon Disciple" would be a good sorcerer PP, as stated. It would just be more dragon-y, but there's nothing wrong with that. An epic destiny would be cool, too. I don't think the apotheosis should make you Gargantuan (there go most dungeon crawls), and I like the idea of it being a stance-like transformation. Your immortality can be to become a true dragon. |
| #19nihzletFeb 06, 2009 15:08:44 | I don't think the 'Dragon Apotheosis' should include stat changes or anything of the mechanical sort. None of the other 'Immortality' things do, because when you hit that point that means the campaign is over, you retire this character, and you start over. There's no reason to add it to this one. |
| #20glimeral_dupFeb 06, 2009 15:28:32 | Since the Archmage "Immortality" benefit grants the player the ability to create new spells for use in future adventures, I figured that providing the mechanical statistics for your "Dragon" apothesis would allow the DM to use your character as an NPC in future adventures as well...... PC1: Oh heck, wasn't that the legendary dragon Mezothakh who just flew overhead.... He's supposed to dwell in these parts. PC2: Yeah. I heard that he was once a Dragonborn Warrior who, in helping defeat Orcus' attempt to take over the Shadowfell, transformed into a dragon for some reason. PC1: I sure wouldnt want to get on the bad side of any dragon who went up against Orcus and lived to tell the tale. PC2: Neither would I.... Lets get out of here. |
| #21nihzletFeb 06, 2009 18:48:29 | Well of course that's reasonable, the same as it's reasonable that any Demigod PC who ascends to a God should be able to be worshipped, but there's no reason to constrain the stats of the dragon to the stats of the PC, much like they didn't add a full set of spell design rules for the Archmage. Let the DM make up stats for the dragon based on the player and the normal dragon of the appropriate type, kind of like one of the dragons in the dragon hall of fame in the Draconomicon. It ought to be freeform and up to the DM(and possibly the former player), not codified in a set of hard rules, IMO. The overall idea of a dragon ascendant ED that ends in you becoming a dragon is fine in my mind, I just think the 'Immortality' aspect needs to stay crunch-free. ![]() |
| #22Arcane_GuyverFeb 06, 2009 18:57:27 | I'm voting for a PP called 'Dragonheart Mage' and an ED called 'Dragon Disciple.' But I'm usually wrong. ![]() |
| #23Dragon9Feb 07, 2009 17:20:30 | Meh... you don't even need it. Just play a Dragonborn. ![]() |
