Midnight monday I got to see the 3rd Excerpt of the New GW stuff.

Character Origins
Gamma World Excerpt - Cockroach Origin
www.wizards.com/DnD/Article.aspx?x=dnd/4...

THIS PICT is from the GEAR Exerpt, but it has a
Cockroach/Thri-Kreen in it. So... makes better sense.

For some reason I am tempted to run a non-random Gamma World game, those backgrounds just sound cool.

I have linked to this thread as the official discussion thread for the Character Origins preview.

Here is the actual image, if anyone is interested.

The preview talks about more than just the cockroach origin.  Let us know what you think.

Shouldn't the Opportunistic Meal utility heal the cockroach? It's about grabbing a bite from a prone target after all, isn't it?

You're forgetting the reduced healing on GW.

The damage is up the healing is down,
and every one is dying all around

Huzzah. I've got enough characters to craft detailed backstory for. It'll be fun to just send some poor sap out there to get pulverized (especially if my DM just lets me rotate new characters in).

I TOTALLY agree... but the pain of talking about it is that it is too late to Care. Games done! Games Shipping! Fun Ideas and Good Ideas are useless.
It IS 4th ED, again. Frown

'Engineered Human?'

Interestingly, you can be an Android (never an option before, IIRC), or a Plant (first an option in 3rd, but not since 4th, IIRC).  I suppose if neither origin implies an animal type, you're a mutated human?

It would seem that a nice feature would be a way to calculate EXP valure for Player Characters. That way a DM/GM can make mutants and use them as villains. Would supply a lot of diversity at no cost.

Could even have only one origin? (Cockroach people) or three? ('rouch-Siesmic-Yeti)

Another (good?) idea too late... Undecided

You mean a DM-controlled PC that gains XP when it kills characters?  I'm not sure that's a great idea, but I suppose since a 6 level 5 regular monsters is an even challenge for 6 level 5 PCs, it seems like it would be pretty easy to estimate.

It's worth noting that PCs and monsters are not built the same way for specific design reasons, and typically PC v PC combat in 4e is tragic (since a single PC typically has enough resources to one- or two-shot another PC).  But if there's a single game in which it could work, it would be this one!

EDIT:  Oh!  The whole point of this post:  the DMG included class-based "templates" in 4e.  It would be perfectly reasonable (depending on how many DM resources the game comes with) to see origin templates for use in DM monster building.  Since the origins themselves are so sparse, they might actually be easy enough to simply apply.
