So we have already had one official Dark Sun article since the advent of digital insider and now there appears to be an article dubbed "Gladiator" coming up on the 17th and another one called "Running Gladiator Games" on the 20th. Is it just me, or does this all have a potential Dark Sun vibe?

My gut instinct in this one says no. I realize that gladiators are an aspect of Dark Sun(although I'm not sure how important), but they are already basically starting to port Raveloft this month into the Shadowfell. I just don't think that they would try to integrate two major elements of two different campaign worlds in the same issue.

So I'm predicting that the gladiator article won't be Dark Sun flavored nor will it have any references to Dark Sun, but it will be something that can be used to fill the Gladiator role should someone decide to play a Dark Sun campaign.

So, it may be just that I'm not familiar with Dark Sun, but which Dragon Article was about Dark Sun? I ask because I'm curious about the setting.

There was an article a few months back that updated a few monsters from Dark Sun. The setting was mentioned in passing in the intro and the logo was used but the piece really didnt go into any setting-specific detail.

It is in Dragon 364... Hazards of Dark Sun, pp. 66-67.

I am actually hoping that the article will include something Athas-y... even if it is just a fluffy, passing nod.

I miss Dark Sun... :rolleye2:

even if it isn't explicitly Dark Sun related.. it still does provide the mechanics for an aspect of Dark Sun regardless..

I for one think that Dark Sun is coming after Eberron.. the stars just seem to be aligning.. the trickle of Dark Sun related material appearing in the magazines, the reissuing of the novels, Psionics very likely being in the PHB III, the popularity the campaign setting seem to have on the forums... even the hints that were dropped not long ago by developers all seem to me to be pointing to a Dark Sun release for 2010...

oh yea and i checked with my local witch, she threw her chicken bones down and spilled some bats blood over the top, she spoke in riddles that made mention of Sorcerer Kings, Defilers of nature and vicious little people...

There is going to be a Gladiator multi-class option next year, not an actual class, though.

Is it rumored (or confirmed?) to be like the spellscarred multi-class option?

It is confirmed to be a multiclass only class. It isn't confirmed as to whether or not it works exactly like Spellscars or not. Their language has suggested that it will be different, but they haven't specifically said it will be different.*shrugs*

I assume that Gladiator will differ from Spellscarred mainly in that it will be (presumably) a Martial class, and Spellscarred was arcane.

I also figure there won't be quite as many powers listed.
And, perhaps, it will have an at-will or two to allow Paragon Multiclassing (if anyone wants to).

PHB III? Seriously, I really only want to have to own ONE PHB. But that aside, I would love to see some Dark Sun setting injected into 4E. The atmosphere was so much more gritty than Forgotton Realms IMO.

I would also like to see Dragonlance given a little love as well ;)

I would LOVE to see Dark Sun brought back... The setting was so much more gritty, and the interesting tweaks that they did to the various races and classes was refreshing. And I think it would give them a neat opportunity add some new flavor to the Wizards, what with the "Defiler and Preserver" casting system.

I would love to have my 20 STR Half-Elf Fighter back...or better yet, my Mul Gladiator!

As much as personally it breaks my heart (as I'm sure it does the folks who produce the game too) the breakdown of the market that was created with all the scads of settings really hurt D&D back in the day.

You'd get markets of people who ONLY played Spelljammer and wouldn't even touch a book that wasn't for their niche world. It meant products would get diffused over an already small market.

I think the best solution was in the old magazines, where once a year they'd have an issue dedicated to all the old stuff. They sold great, and allowed some love for the dusty oldies, but never really hurt the brand the way it would to suddenly toss in a whole 'nuther campaign setting.

That said, I would love to have some books or articles or whatever that ported some of that Dark Sun flavor into the core setting. I think that'd be great. I wouldn't pull in the whole thing, but much as was done with Greyhawk with references to a Temple of Elemental Evil, or the Ravenlofty touches given to areas of the Shadowfell...I think you could bring in a lot of the feel of what made Athas great, with an artful nod here and there, without mutating the D&D World into an ugly frankensetting.

I've said it before and I'll say it again -- Dark Sun 4e in 2010.

Hey, that rhymed.

Multiple Dark Sun and gladiator-themed articles in Dragon, the reprinting of the Prism Pentad this winter, the fact that the setting fits in perfectly with D&D4's stated design goals, the revelation that the setting released in 2010 will be a "surprise"...

I'm no source of insider information guys, but my money is on Athas making a comeback sooner rather than later. Seems to me Wizards is laying it on pretty thick.

(For the record, no, I'm not a Dark Sun fan -- I just calls 'em like I sees 'em.)

Agreed. And since Eberron is coming out pre-psionics, Dark Sun would be the go-to setting for release alongside a PH3 with Psionic (and elemental?) power-sources.

Another excellent point. PHBIII is almost guaranteed to contain Psionic classes, and Elemental is not a bad guess either, although that would really **** off the monk fans.

That's true, both of those were very important in the old Dark Sun campaign...it would be interesting timing. I'm almost afraid to get my hopes up about it, but it does sound like there's a decent possibility of there being a Dark Sun revival.

I'm sorry, but I can't help but have a completely opposite feeling on whether it will be Elemental vs. Shadow. Actually what would **** me off the most would be Ki being in there but Elemental not. Ki can have a two word blurb in the back of the very last PHB in 4E and be too much for all I care. Though I might still play it if it's written very well.

Agreed, but with less profanity. Oh, and wouldn't it be possible to put both in the same book?

I do as well. I, personally, would rather see Shadow. But if they were planning to put out Dark Sun alongside PHIII, I would expect to see the Elemental source covered.

Oh, and wouldn't it be possible to put both in the same book?

I believe so, assuming Psionics got the 4-class block (and it should, in my mind).

That would allow for:
  • Psionics (4 Classes)
  • Elemental (2 Classes)
  • Shadow (2 Classes)

I would far-and-away rather see Shadow than Ki (even if it does absorb incarnum - here's hoping).

I agree, I'm afraid to get my hopes up.

But, all things considered, it would make a lot of sense, given everything else going on, and it would be an excellent option if they intended the PHIII to feel like a "core book."

Really, I just want to see a campaign setting that can incorporate the PHIII (and II - Eberron should, and FR did slightly).

Given FR's hints toward the races (at least) of the PHII, I expect (and hope) that we'll see settings that follow a scheme like...

  • PH I
  • Setting I (FR) [Built on PH I / "Hints At" PH II]
  • PH II
  • Setting II (Eberron) [Built on PH I & PH II / "Hints At" PH III]
  • PH III
  • Setting III (Dark Sun?) [Built on PH I & PH II & PH III / "Hints At" PH IV]

In my mind, that would be perfect, assuming the inclusion of Psionics in PHII. That would allow for Eberron referencing (but not being built on / integrating fully) Psionics.

OK I can see that...I just kinda am a little impatiant waiting for Shadow and PSi power sources...elemental I am too unsure of, and Ki...well lets just say I think that can wait...

Psi is the only power source that I'm seriously disappointed not to see coming in PHB2, and that I feel needs to be done (other than the ones in PHB1) to complete the game. Other than that, I don't care if they make Moogles and Booze the other two power sources for PHB3.

I'd love to see the Dark Sun campaign setting redone in 4 Edition. I used to have that back in the 2nd edition days but someone stole my box set. Still have few of the other books though. I love the feral halfling. I still remember a players quote when ordering food in an inn, "Get me a cat and a mallet".

I think the setting would work 10 times better with 4th edition than it ever did with 2nd edition.

From the Manual of the Planes preview:
The planes are: The World: The mortal plane of existence is the natural world. This world may be Abeir-Toril, Athas, Eberron, Krynn, Oerth, or a world of your own devising. This plane also encompasses the space between worlds.

It's not just being hinted at in websites any more. It's being hinted at in print!

Indeed it is. I missed "Abeir-" on the line previous.
